Jinny Exstead sighed. It had been a couple weeks since she had gone to work.... ever since Captain suspended her. I need to go back Jinny thought. Jinny got up and got a beer.... ahh, that soothed her. She was just about to head off to sleep, when she heard the doorbell ring, followed by footsteps running. Kids thought Jinny. She opened the door to see.... a baby! A cute little baby sleeping in a basket. There was a note attached to the basket. Jinny picked it up. Dear friend, it read. Though I don't know you, I have left my darling child Lydia with you. I hope you will takke good care of her. Love, Annie. Jinny sighed. Lydia, huh? Jinny took a good, long look at her. "Well, kid. I guess you have to stay with me," said Jinny, bringing her into her room. "I'll do something with you in the morning....."
"Captain!" cried Jinny, running down the halls of the division. "Jinny, what the..." Kate looked at Jinny. She hadn't seen her ever since the day she suspended her. "Kate, someone left a baby on my doorstep," said Jinny. Kate looked at Jinny in surprise. "Did you just say baby?" she asked. Jinny sighed. "Yes, baby. I don't know what to do...."

Kate just stared at Jinny. What in the world could Jinny do with a baby? "Listen, Captain, could you, well, maybe watch her for me today?" asked Jinny. "But, Jinny, I'm the captain of this place. I have certain duties to deal with," said Kate. "Why not ask Magda or one of the other girls?" Jinny looked at her. She just didn't understand, did she? "Never mind," Jinny said, walking off.
"Jinny, what's wrong?" asked Magda as she saw Jinny walk sadly out of the captain's office. "Weren't you suspended?" Jinny looked at her. "Yeah, yeah, I was. I just came here because now I have a baby," said Jinny bluntly. Magda dropped the files she was holding. "Well, Jinny.... who's the father? Is it Theodore?" asked Magda. "No Mag. Some woman left her on my doorstep," said Jinny weakly. "Now I don't know what to do with her." Magda smiled. "Well, you've babysat for Ben before. I owe you. I'll watch her," said Magda. Jinny stared at her. "You will?" asked Jinny in amazement. "Sure, what are best friends for?" asked Magda. Jinny smiled at her. "Thanks, Mag, I really do owe you...."

Magda sat with Lydia in Jinny's apartment. Why does Jinny need me to watch her now???thought Magda. Jinny's not doing anything now....is she?
Jinny sat in a restaurant, waiting for Teddy. He finally slid into the seat across from Jinny. "Hey," he said softly. Jinny cleared her throat. "Teddy, I have a... baby," she blurted out. "A baby?? But... who..." he tried to say. "Teddy, she was left on my doorstep by some woman I don't know," Jinny explained. Teddy breathed a sigh of relief. "Good. Because if had been with someone else, well...."
The phone rang at Jinny's apartment. Magda looked at it. Should I get it? she wondered. She decided to. "Hello?" she answered. "God, who the hell is this?" a voice said. Immediately, Magda realized that this could only be one person- Jinny's brother John. "Umm, this is Magda," she said. "Did I call Jinny Exstead?" he asked. "Yes, you did. Is this John?" she asked. "Yeah. Are you Jinny's love mate?" he asked. What a revolting thought. Jinny and Magda..... ewww. "No, I'm her best friend. She's out right now," said Magda. "Oh. Well, could you tell her to look out for a baby on her doorstep? My friend Annie said she was leaving her little girl Lydia with Jinny....."

Magda dropped the phone. John had told the woman to leave Lydia on Jinny's doorstep?? "Umm, yes, Lydia's here. In fact, that's why I'm here. I'm babysitting," said Magda. "Oh. Well, have Jinny call me. Bye." John hung up. Magda just stared at the phone, then dialed Captain's number.
"McCafferty," Kate said as she answered the phone. "Oh, hello, Magda. Yes, I understand you are babysitting Lydia..... WHAT????" Kate herself nearly dropped the phone. "John told you that his friend left Lydia there on purpose? Jinny has to know."
"Jinny, how are you going to deal with a child and also be a cop?" asked Teddy. "I don't know, that's my problem. I mean, when she's grown up, she'll be easier to take care of," said Jinny. Jinny then heard her cell phone ring. "Hello? Oh, hi John. What? Oh, yeah. You WHAT????????????" cried Jinny so loud that everyone in the resteraunt dropped their fork. "I can't believe you didn't tell me until now... we'll talk when I get home." Jinny hung up her phone. Teddy stared at her. "Jin, what's wrong?" he asked. "John told his friend to leave Lydia there. It wasn't just a coincidence....."

Teddy stared at her with his mouth open. "John told her to? Oh my God, Jinny," he asid. Jinny stood up. "Look, I have to go," Jinny said, walking out.
"Jinny! Back so soon?" asked Magda. Jinny picked up Lydia. "I gotta take her somewhere. Somewhere where she'll be safe...how about Angela's?" asked Jinny. Magda shrugged. Maybe Angela's place would be good....
"Angela!" cried Jinny. Angela looked up in surprise. "Yes, Jinny?" she asked. "Angela, I want you to watch my child. Her name is Lydia, she's a good kid. Just watch her," Jinny said. She ran off, leaving Angela with Lydia.
"JOHN!" cried Jinny as she walked into her brother's house. "We need to talk." "No kidding, Jin," said John. "Where's Lydia?" "Oh, she's at Angela's house," said Jinny. "Now why did you tell your friend to give her to me?" she asked. "Because I knew you were suspended and you had time... I'm sorry," said John. "Aww, it's all right. I'll probably grow to like the kid," said Jinny.
10 YEARS LATER
"Mommy, mommy! Can I stay at Aunt Angela's house tonight?" asked Lydia Blumenthal, running into the kitchen. "Sure, sweetie, it's fine with me, but ask your father too," said Jinny. "Daddy, can I stay at Aunt Angela's?" Lydia asked her father. "Sure, honey. Why don't you call Aunt Angela?" suggested Teddy. "Ok!" Lydia said. She picked up the phone. "Hey, Aunt Angela, it's me, Lydia. Can I stay at your house tonight?" asked Lydia. "OK! Bye!" Lydia grinned at Jinny and Teddy. "She said ok!" Jinny smiled. "Ok, I'll drive you over..."
THE END
Yeah, I know, so short and such a stupid ending but it will continue into Angela's story which I will start now!
