I was born in 1967, so I was old enough to watch the Mary Tyler Moore show as achild with my parents. Recently, I bought a Season 3 DVD of the show, and got to watch this show as an adult man.

What is interesting to me is that Mary T. Moore was younger on the show
than I am now. I no longer see her as I did as a child, an adult woman with problems I do not understand. Mary and Rhoda are younger than I am. I do think that they are much more mature than a Generation X woman their age thirty year since.As an adult male, I see watch the show and notice Mary as a sexual being, because MTM was hot. In Ordinary People, this woman was hot.

Really my question is, have you ever grown up with these old TV shows an one day realize that you are as old as these characters? Are you more or less mature than they are? Is there really a gap between you and them?

Although you've got a lot of questions going on in this post, I definitely have experienced that kind of space-time continuum that you're talking about.

I was age 11-18 when I watched the original run of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and I found them to be older adults who, through the great acting and writing, had easily identifiable and often funny but always real situations, many of which I had yet to experience. And, of course, I had a crush on Mary.

I skipped the Nick at Nite reruns, and last year finally bought the DVDs and watched Seasons 1-4 again. Now in my mid to late 40s, I saw the same easily identifiable and often funny but always real situations, but I'd experienced some of them and could appreciate all of them even more. And I was still crushing on Mary.

I can't really say whether I'm more or less mature now than they were, but I will say it WAS odd to realize that as I was watching the second time I was probably 5-7 years older than they were at the time. But I just think those shows are so timeless, so well-written, and the characters so well-defined and funny, that when I'm 70 and am watching them, I'll still be able to identify and laugh. And I forever will have a crush on Mary.

Mary was an absolute knockout back in the day! But she's had WAY too much plastic surgery done on her face, I'm sorry to say.

I know!! She was adorable she didn't need it. I think it was because she had diabetes young, which makes you age faster. As a result of aging faster, she started getting plastic surgery and the rest is history.

It's so sad that these ladies get all these face lifts and botox - it just makes them look worse!!! Some of them look positively scary. What's wrong with aging naturally and gracefully??? :eek: It's not worth it!!!!

I know! And I honestly think that MTM would have aged very gracefully and not have been a bad looking older person. Debbie Reynolds and Betty White are two that look great still!! MTM scares me sometimes. And that's sad because I love her and she is so awesome, and I hate seeing someone whom I've looked up to my whole life being like that.
