Was he out of line for arguing with Archie, even though he was living under Archie and Edith's roof?

I don't think so either. He and Archie clashed on several issues, but it's just like anyone who has differences. Husbands and wives fight and they are under the same roof as well. Mike was a very outspoken person who always wanted to get his point across. I wish I was that brave sometimes!

Interesting answers thus far, but I think he was for the simple fact that it was Archie's house. He could've easily thrown Mike out for disrespecting him, which Mike has done several times.

Mike got on my nerves a lot of the times. Every time he was around Archie, he tried to pick a fight with him, IMO. He came off a lot of the times as a jerk, just for having different political beliefs than his father-in-law.

He may have been out of line, and sometimes I wished that Archie had thrown his ass out the door. He went too far a lot of the times.

:yeahthat: Excellent post!

That's how I feel, I mean, aside from his daughter being married to the guy, Archie had no other obligation to keep him in his home.

What I don't get is how Gloria was attracted to Mike in the first place-LOL. That always made me wonder. If I was Archie, I would be pissed if the guy I argued with daily finally moved out, but to the house next door

I liked Mike, and couldn't stand Archie, but Mike was out of line. That was Archie's home, and he tried to get even louder with Archie at times. Mike didn't even have a consistant job, didn't he? He had free meals and a shelter, which I personally have a problem in a grown man.

I don't remember Archie ever telling him to shut up...this was his house. I think Archie put up with a lot because he loved Gloria so much.

Well, on one hand Mike was Gloria's husband so that did make him part of the family - which did give him a right to disagree (within reason)without sanctions. If a guest argued with a host, now that to me, WOULD BE WAY OUT OF LINE.

However, I think Mike could have been more diplomatic, esp. since he wasn't paying any rent. But what really galled me about Mike was that, when push came to shove, he was just as close-minded as Archie. Remember, Mike's attitudes toward Gloria when she wants to initiate relations...and also...how uneasy he is about having a woman doctor. Actually, all things being equal, Archie was actually a little more open-minded than Mike. I know this sounds odd, but when both are really challanged by someone very different than themselves, Archie might huff and puff and grumble and make his dumb remarks but he does come around faster than Mike. Mike just stands there like a dummy all freaked and pretty much stays freaked. Mike was not my fav character - but his buddy Lionel - now that guy was cool!

You know Rich, you really made some excellent points and I happen to agree with you on the open-minded part. I couldn't stand Mike and Gloria was nothing other then a "yes person" with her husband most of the time. Here she grew up in a "christian home" and marries Mike and since he says there isn't a god, all of a sudden she believes the same? That bugs the hell out of me! She suddenly believes in all of his liberal garbage where she may have felt differently before.
I really enjoyed the episode where Mike was passed up for a promotion and transfer because they needed to hire a black man. It seemed he finally got a taste of his own medicine with all that preaching and marching he did for the equality for the minorities. He didn't take it in a very mature matter either.

Also, I feel he was very much out of line with Archie. Yes, Archie pissed and moaned alot, but he had to carry two disagreeable ingrates through for 5 yrs.! I always found it silly that Mike couldn't go to school and work at least part time to help Archie pull the weight in that house. Look at what people do today, some go to school full time and hold down a full time job and raise families! He was a lazy slob! I think he and Gloria also forgot whose house it was at times like when they invited those dumb hippie friends to stay over without even asking Archie. If mike would have been more respectful, grateful and payed his way, then I would say he had more of a right to put in his two cents, but he wasn't and he didn't so therefore I feel he was out of line. And if I recall correctly, Gloria and Mike decided all on their own that they would live with Archie and Edith without having the decency of asking.

What a surprise!!!! Like when everyone played that tell the truth game.

Yes, there are actually some people who do this. Shocking isn't it!!

Oh yes, I remember those two cuckoo bird friends of Mike and Gloria. But, oops, my mistake, one was a Robin if I recall correctly LOL!!! Even Gloria got po'd at them in the end!!

Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but that doesn't mean that you get to pick arguements with the man who is allowing you to live under his roof for free. I have to agree with some of the comments above, that they were both closed minded. Mike would always lecture to Archie about how he should act, when in truth, all he was doing was trying to get Archie to change his ways of thinking, which is very hypocritical since he would talk about accepting other people for who they are.

This is true. You don't bite the hand that feeds you. If Michael found Archie so objectionable, he should have found another living situation.
