If you have Caller ID, how do you handle these situations?

1) The phone rings, and you look at the Caller ID display and know who's calling, for example, Felix is calling you. Do you answer the phone and just say, "Hello".....Or, do you answer it and say, "Hi Felix"?

2) You come home, and there are no messages on your phone answering machine, but your Caller ID shows that Felix called but didn't leave a message. Do you do nothing, or do you call Felix and tell him that you saw his name on your Caller ID?

My answers will follow.

If it's a number/name that I don't recognize, I let it go and if they leave a message, I'll listen to it and decide if it's important enough to call them back. Most of the time, they don't leave a message, so I know it must not have been important. Heck, even some numbers/names I DO recognize, sometimes I won't pick up. That's a whole different story for another time.

As Oprah would say, "That's a whole 'nother show.

If I answer the phone, knowing who's on the other end, I don't use their name. I'm not wild over someone answering, "Hi Janice".

I don't use my Caller ID as an answering machine. If a person wants me to call them, they'll leave a message. Often times, the person wants to speak with you at that moment only. Someone wants to ask about a recipe as they're cooking something, or someone wants directions while driving, something like that. In other words, they're not looking for conversation, but want to speak to you only at the time they called.

1. I still just say hello.

2. I don't call back. One, because I don't like making phone calls, and two, because if they didn't leave a message, too bad. Must not have been that important.

Wow Cathy, your answer seems to be popular! I don't have Caller ID, but I would use these tactics as well. Several years ago I used to have Caller ID, but we were only getting numbers on the screen that were in our immediate area. If people downtown called, it wouldn't display. So since we didn't know anyone in our immediate area, we ended up getting rid of it. I think voicemail works just fine. If I don't want to talk to someone and the phone rings, I just let it ring and then later will check the voice mail. As Cathy said, if they don't leave a message it must not have been that important.

If you can't leave me a message, then what you have to say wasn't all that urgent, now was it?? I use both caller ID and my machine to screen calls--esp job related. I'm not being paid to be "on call", so the heck with them.

One thing I will say... I used to have a # where you could make it look like ANY NUMBER calling someone and that opened up alot of possibilities!

You could call peoples voicemail WITH THIER # AS YOUR ID and it lets you right into thier box! (No passcode needed)

That only worked however if they had password security disabled if calling from your own phone......

One time on our HOME PHONE I saw some telemarketing idiots calling WITH OUR NUMBER as thier ID!!

I put a password on our voicemail instantly!!!!!!!!!!!
