Forgive me. I wrote this fic at two in the morning, and to say the least I wrote it in my sleep. I really had good intentions of writing a good fic, but instead I wrote this. So read at your own risk because I'm not sure it makes complete since...:

"One More Day"

Chapter1

“Ugh! He can be so unreasonable sometimes,” Jinny exclaimed loudly in a discouraged tone as she got into her car. She put the key in the ignition and then just lay her head back on the headrest as she turned it so she could see her house. … She had just had a big blow out with her dad over something stupid, again. Jinny rubbed her hands over her face and starred at the ceiling of her car and sighed. She loved her dad, but she didn’t care too much for the prejudice side of him, especially when he was being prejudice against his own son.

‘John talked things out with Casey, why can’t dad?’ Jinny asked herself silently.

She looked back over at the house one more time. She knew she should go in and make up with her dad. The blow out had made no sense in the first place. Jinny was just beckoning him to talk to Casey and give Casey support, and her dad had said he would consider, but that wasn’t good enough for Jinny at the moment. She knew her life wasn’t perfect, but she wanted her family to at least get along. She had yelled at her dad that he didn’t have a heart since he wouldn’t talk to his own son and then stormed out of the house.

Jinny felt like slapping herself. She should have been patient and told her dad that as long as he thought about it then a step in the right direction had been taken, but she didn’t do that. She opened her car door, intending to go back inside. She quickly shut it though.

‘I’ll come see him in the morning,’ she assured herself and she started her car pulled into the road heading home…

Jinny rolled over in bed and starred at her alarm clock and then at the telephone that was ringing off the hook. She had stopped by Anchorside on her way home and had a few drinks and she needed her sleep so the captain wouldn’t be crawling her in the morning. She picked up her pillow and tossed it at the phone.

“No one in their right mind calls at four in the morning,” she muttered as she rolled back under and hugged her pillow tighter.

The pillow missed the phone though, so it continued ringing. She moaned for a few seconds and then pulled herself up as she rolled over so she could answer the phone.

“Hello,” she answered disgruntled.

She listened to the person on the other end of the phone, and by the time the one-minute conversation was over she was widely awake and aware of what was going on, even though she didn’t believe it. She hung up the and then quickly picked it up again and dialed a number. She impatiently rubbed her hand through her hair as she waited for someone on the other line to pick up.

Finally the tired voice of her partner and friend Magda was on the other end of the line.

“Mag, yeah it’s me, Jinny,” Jinny stated nervously as she began looking around the room with a scared look on her face.

She listened to Magda’s tired yet concerned voice on the other end asking her what was wrong.

“Yeah, umm, it’s my dad. Could you meet me at the hospital? I need someone there.”

She breathed a sigh of relief as Magda said she would pick Jinny up and drive her to the hospital, and then she thanked her friend and hung up the phone. She quickly dressed and then walked down to the street and waited for Magda to get there…

Chapter2

Jinny sat with her head in her hands. She was in the E.R. waiting area, waiting for news on her dad. Her brothers were there as well, along with Magda. Magda sat by Jinny trying to console her, while Casey paced the floor and John starred out the window.

Meanwhile, in Jinny’s mind was the episode that had just happened hours earlier. The fight she had had with her dad. The dumb fat that hadn’t even been necessary. The thought in the back of Jinny’s mind haunted her. The thought that told her she had caused her dad’s heart attack, that she had pushed him to the limit…

…Before Jinny could think on that thought anymore a doctor approached them.

“Exstead?”

All four heads turned to the doctor who gave them a small smile and then focused his attention on the chart that was in his hands. “Mr. Exstead is out of surgery. He suffered from a massive heart attack. He is in a comma right now, and unfortunately since this isn’t his first heart attack the odds of him coming out of this alive aren’t good.”

Jinny pressed her hands to her face and tried to fight back the tears, Casey looked to John for some sort of answers, and John punched his hand into the empty chair that was by him.

“I’m sorry,” the doctor said solemnly. “If you would like to see him then you may go in one at a time. He is being transferred to ICU as we speak. Before you go in we ask that you clean your hands and you will have to wear a doctor’s mask while you’re in there. I’m sorry that there is nothing else we can do for him.” With that the doctor left.

The waiting room remained silent. Magda felt extremely uneasy there as she watched how each person was reacting. She herself felt awful, but she knew it was nothing like how they were feeling. She had hardly known Jinny’s dad. She’d only met him once or twice, although Jinny talked about him often. She looked over at Jinny who was sitting next to her. She could tell Jinny was beginning to cry, and that reality had just set in. She then watched as John and Casey left the waiting room… ‘Going to see their dad alive for probably the last time,’ Magda though to herself with a frown.

After a few moments of silence Jinny stood up and walked over to look out the window John had previously been starring out.

“I can’t believe this,” she said as she wiped away her tears. “I was just with him a few hours earlier.”

Magda as well stood up and walked over to where Jinny was standing. “Things like this happen, Jin. There’s really no reason for it, they just do.”

Jinny didn’t say anything, she just continued starring out the window.

“Hey,” Magda said trying to lighten the mood. “At least you got to spend some time with him before he, eh, you know.”

Jinny bit her tongue. ‘Yeah, I spent time with him,’ she thought to herself. ‘I made his blood pressure go like sky high.’

Before Jinny could say anything else to Magda Kate McCafferty rushed into the room. She was breathing hard and it was obvious she had just woken up.

“Captain, what are you doing here?” Magda questioned as she saw Kate enter the room.

The Captain stopped and took a deep breath. “I got a call. He was a former investigator. I worked cases with him. I came to visit.”

“Well, so much for that. He’s as good as gone,” Jinny said bitterly as she turned to face the captain.

Captain starred at Jinny with a sympathetic look and then shrugged. “I’m sorry.”

“Yeah, well, that makes two of us,” Jinny said, still using a slightly bitter tone.

Magda looked at Jinny and then at the captain. “I’m gonna go get us some coffee, ok?”

Before Jinny could respond Magda walked out of the room, sensing the captain wanted to speak with Jinny alone.

Captain walked over and sat down in the chair Jinny had previously been sitting in. She sighed and looked over at Jinny who had once again focused her attention out the window.

“How ya doing?” the captain questioned.

“Just great. My dad has all of about thirty minutes to live and I’m considering going out and celebrating.”

The captain ignored the comment as she wiggled out of her overcoat and placed it across her legs. “I know it must be tough on you.”

“Gosh you’re good.”

“Because it was tough on me when I lost my dad. And it’s tough on me now because I’m loosing my mom.”

The room was silent for a minute. The captain wasn’t sure how far she should take this with Jinny. She had never had a real conversation with Jinny before, and she wasn’t too sure death was the best topic to start with. She sighed and knowing someone had to talk Jinny through this she began trying once again.

“Yeah, my dad died about ten years ago, and my mom has been sick for a while now.”

Jinny crossed her arms. She slowly turned around and looked over at the captain with an unsure expression. “Sorry, I didn’t know.”

The captain shrugged. “It’s ok. I haven’t gotten over it, but I’ve moved on.”

Jinny sighed.

The captain continued, “ You’ll get over it, too. I mean look around, you obviously have a good friend in Magda for her to get up at such an ungodly hour and sit with you at such a horrible place. You have other family members who know what you’re going through, you all can talk out your feelings together. You actually have a good thing going for you here, Jinny.”

Jinny looked at the floor. “Yeah, I guess.”

She looked up on the clock at the wall. “I’m going to go to ICU now. Eh, thanks for the eh, consolation.”

“Jinny, just one more thing. Everyone has different ways of dealing with pain, don’t let yours be alcohol, if so you may be the next Exstead lying in ICU.”

Jinny wasn’t sure how to respond or react to this last statement so she just walked out of the room and headed for ICU. On her way to ICU she couldn’t get the fight out of her head. She couldn’t the thought of her being the cause of her dad’s heart attack. She cringed at the thought that the last moments that her dad would remember with her would be those of yelling and screaming. … She stopped walking and leaned up against the wall. ‘Why didn’t I go back inside?’ she questioned herself silently. She beat her head against the wall as she slid down it and pulled her knees up under her chin. ‘Why didn’t I just go back in?’ the question continued playing in her head.

As the question continued playing in her head and she tormented herself she felt someone sit down beside her. She looked over to see Magda kneeled down by her.

“The last thing I did with my dad was fight,” Jinny said bluntly.

Magda nodded understandingly. “Now you have a chance to change that. Go in and talk to him. He’ll hear you.”

After a few minutes of Jinny sitting there thinking about what she should say to her dad, she made her way to ICU with Magda right behind her. … Once there she washed her hands and put on the doctor’s mask as she was told. She then followed the nurse to the section of the room that her father was at. The nurse motioned that she had five minutes, and then walked away. Jinny wiped away the tears that were now streaming down her face-she was no longer able to hold them back. She looked down at her dad, hardly able to recognize him anymore. He had tubes running all through his body and his face was as white as a ghost’. Jinny reached down and grabbed his hand. She just stood there like that until the nurse came back for her. She nodded her head to the nurse, signaling that she was coming. She then bent down and whispered to her dad.

“I’m sorry dad,” she said between sobs. “You were the best, dad. I love you.”

Jinny turned to leave, but stopped as she felt a squeeze. She looked down. Her dad had squeezed her hand. She then watched and listened as his heart monitor flat lined. Her father was dead. The nurse rushed her out of the room as a doctor rushed in…

Magda looked over at Jinny as she walked out of ICU.

“He’s dead,” Jinny stated bluntly.

LAST NIGHT I HAD A CRAZY DREAM
A WISH WAS GRANTED JUST FOR ME,
IT COULD BE FOR ANYTHING
I DIDN'T ASK FOR MONEY
OR A MANSION IN MALIBU
I SIMPLY WISHED, FOR ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU

Magda was now fighting back her own tears as she tried to stay strong for her friend. “You gonna be ok?”

Jinny starred at the wall in front of her, thinking about the events that had taken place in the last twelve hours. Nothing would ever be the same…

“How can someone’s life change in such a short amount of time?”

“Life is crazy like that, Jin. No one is guaranteed another breath. Your father just used his last.”

“Yeah, but still…it isn’t fair…”

ONE MORE DAY
ONE MORE TIME
ONE MORE SUNSET, MAYBE I'D BE SATISFIED
BUT THEN AGAIN
I KNOW WHAT IT WOULD DO
LEAVE ME WISHING STILL, FOR ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU

Casey and John walked down the hall and towards Jinny. They each embraced her in a hug.

“It’s going to be ok, Jinny,” Casey said forcing a smile for her sake. Jinny could tell he had been crying.

“Yeah,” John said reassuringly. “We’ll get through this together.”

FIRST THING I'D DO, IS PRAY FOR TIME TO CRAWL
THEN I'D UNPLUG THE TELEPHONE
AND KEEP THE TV OFF
I'D HOLD YOU EVERY SECOND
SAY A MILLION I LOVE YOU'S
THAT'S WHAT I'D DO. WITH ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU

Jinny wiped away her tears as she took in a deep breath and nodded. She wanted so badly one more day with her dad. “There was so much we never got to do together. So much I never got to tell him…”

ONE MORE DAY
ONE MORE TIME
ONE MORE SUNSET, MAYBE I'D BE SATISFIED
BUT THEN AGAIN
I KNOW WHAT IT WOULD DO
LEAVE ME WISHING STILL, FOR ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU

Then Jinny gave a small half smile. She had gotten to tell him that she loved him. She had also received a small piece of mind when he squeezed her hand. She had interpreted it as a sign of him letting her know she wasn’t the cause of this, and that he loved her too.

‘Yeah,’ Jinny thought to herself. ‘I am gonna get over this.’

LEAVE ME WISHING STILL FOR ONE MORE DAY
LEAVE ME WISHING STILL FOR ONE MORE DAY

There's not going to be a continuation. Please review and give me your honest opinion, whether you liked it or not.
...I'm going to bed now!
