A man ran to help a woman who had been hit by a car- only to later discover that it was his wife.

James Peters, 60, was driving to collect his wife from a bus stop when he came across the road accident on the M25. He pulled over to help and held a saline drip while the paramedics treated the severely injured pedestrian.

It was only when another passer by handed him a handbag that Mr Peters discovered the victim was his wife Susan. She was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, but died of her injuries.

The tragedy occured when Mrs Peters, also 60, was on her way home work at the Surrey County Council's offices in Kingston. As she crossed a slip road off the M25 in Leatherhead she was hit by a blue Volkswagen Golf.

Mr Peters, a retired businessman who is also a magistrate and president of Twickenham Rugby Club, said today he had lost a "perfect wife". Two days previously the pair had celebrated the 40th wedding anniversary along with their three sons.

"It's no reassurance to me that I was there at her final moments, there's not much reassurance anywhere.

"She was the better half of me and now my better half is gone, I'm totally devastated."

A spokesman for the Surrey Police said a 25-year-old man from nearby Fetcham had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail until November 7.

i know the feeling. i mean it is terrible to lose a loved one, but to discover that the person that has been severely injured and died afterwards, is someone so close to you that you love, and you are at the scene of the incident that took place, is just an awful experience one could go through :(. i just hope they find the driver who was responsible and the judge sends him behind bars as well as having his driving licence revoked

so sad, my heart goes out to the poor man. i've had many similar experiences although none as horrific as that. when i worked at st. francis hospital i saw many extended family members come in by way of ambulance through the emergency dept. it was hard to remain professional while seeing loved ones so sick

That is just sad, and what's sadder is that the guy who hit her was released on bail.
