"Robert did it, Robert did it, I tell you!"

By Sharon Stajda,

Key West, Florida.
It is not that unusual for a young child to have an imaginary friend or two. Often times, we as parents think it cute? A mischievous little friend afoot to take the blame for some minor wrongdoing.

In fact there are parents that will claim a good imagination is healthy.

But what happens when the child begins to be torment by the imaginary friend? To the point that the child can not sleep the night through without the friend awaking them to play? What happens when the play becomes ruff, and frightening to the child?

So it goes this is the story of Robert...

The story begins in the home of Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Otto. The year1896. It was well known the Otto's mistreated there servants and were not the kindest of people. One such servant, that aided in the care of the couples son, Robert Eugene Gene,(Gene) was said to be versed in the ways of voodoo. She for one reason or the other became very displeased with the Otto's, and decided to do something about it. As the story goes the servant gave Gene a doll. The doll standing three feet tall, and stuffed with straw. With life like features, that were at first very endearing to Gene. He decided to name the doll "Robert".

The doll became a constant companion to Gene. It is said that the Otto's often heard Gene upstairs talking to the doll. This in it self might not have been so bad? The Otto's were puzzled to hear the boy answering himself in an entirely different voice than his own?

Many Strange things began to occur in the Otto household. Many neighbors claimed to see Robert move about from window to window, when the family were out. Gene began to blame Robert for mishaps that would occur. The Otto's claimed to hear the doll giggle, and swear they caught glimpses of the doll running about the house.

Gene began to have nightmares and scream out in the night, when his parents would enter the room, they would find furniture over turned, their child in a fright, and Robert at the foot of the bed, with his glaring gaze! "Robert Did It".... The doll was eventually put up into the attic. Where he resided for many years.

When Gene's parents died, and the Otto home came to Gene, Robert was rediscovered in the attic. Robert hold on Gene was strong, and from the moment Gene laid eyes on him, Robert's influence could be again felt. Well Gene's wife Robert unsettling. One day she decided she had enough of Roberts glare...and returned him to his attic sanctuary. Gene was displeased, and demanding that Robert needed a room of his own where he could see out of the window. He put Robert in the turret room, by a window. It wasn't long after that Gene's sanity was questioned?

The citizens of Key West heard about Robert, and his evil doings. Many people walking by the home reported that the doll watched from the turret room, and mocked them as they passed... School children feared walking by the Otto home , in fear of Roberts mean glare.

Gene, himself reported when visiting the turret room, found Robert him in the rocking chair by the turret room window, displeased with his accommodations...home. Finally Gene himself had enough of

But Robert had other plans. Visitors that entered the house could hear something walking back and forth in the attic, and strange giggling sounds. Guests no longer wanted to visit the Otto home.

Gene Otto died in 1972.The home was sold to a new family, and the tale of Robert had died down...

But Robert waited patiently up in the attic to be discovered, once again. The 10 year old daughter of the new owners. Was quick to find Robert in the attic. It was not long before Robert unleashed his displeasure on the child... The little girl claiming that the doll tortured her, and made her life a hell.. Even after more than thirty years later, she steadfastly claims that " the doll was alive and wanted to kill her."

Robert, still dressed in his white sailor's suit and clutching his stuffed lion, lives quite comfortably, though well guarded, at the Key West Martello Museum. Employs at the museum continue to give accounts of Robert being up to his old tricks still today...

Comments From Site Visitors....
Many visitors write me. I felt this letter was very interesting, and felt it worthy of posting...
Someone was just checking out my lens "ROBERT--- The Haunted Doll ..." and wrote you the following note...

"If you're interested, I have a bit more information that was missing
from your page on Robert the haunted doll. The servant was dismissed
from the Otto household because Mrs. Otto spotted the 4 servants in the
backyard doing some form of what she thought to be black magic. Robert
(the little boy) did not go by the name Gene, he was called
"Robert". He only started going by Gene when one day his mother scolded
him using his name, and he told her that his name was not Robert, the
doll's name was Robert, and his name was Gene. According to several
residents of Key West (not me, I don't know whether this part is true) the
government did acknowledge Robert (the doll) and actually granted the
doll property rights.
Also, the servant who made the doll used Gene's hair for the doll. It's
a known fact that once a person's hair is cut it can't change colors
(of course!), however, the doll's hair is now white. If you choose to
visit Robert in the museum and want to take a picture you need to ask
politely and do NOT make fun of the doll! If he allows you to take a
picture he will tilt his head to the side, if he does not tilt his head and
you take a picture anyway bad things happen to not only you but to
anyone you were with or family members. The walls in that room of the
museum are covered in letters from people asking Robert to please take the
curse off, and apologizing for making fun of him.

Pretty spooky looking isn't he?
What do you think? Can an inanimate object, such as Robert the doll be haunted? Can Robert actually move himself about in his confinement?

"IT was thought by F. W. H. Myers that, when a particularly stressful and emotional event occurs, some impression is made on the etherial or "metetherial" environment, and that this persists and can be perceived, when conditions are favourable, by people with psychical sensitiveness, and that this may account for some stories of re-enacted murder scenes and other haunts, in which it seems unreasonable" --- read more

Robert Rules After Dark at Ft. East Martello Museum Key West
Robert the Doll is over 100 years old and resides in a glass case at Fort East Martello Museum. Since he has come to live at the Fort many strange events have been reported. "Blame It on Robert" has become a well known excuse for pranks in Key West. None of the museum staff wants to the last to leave the old fort. "This is a rather spooky place after sundown," said curator Norman Aberle. "A lot of spirits live here, and somehow, I think Robert controls it all."

To the author of the Robert article and to many of those who've responded: are you illiterate or were you just high when you wrote this? I've never seen so many spelling and gramatical erros. You should be ashamed. Go back to primary school or crack a book every now and again. Maybe by reading books you'll learn spelling and grammar.

totally freaked
heres a bit you can add to your story: the lady who made the doll was an abused servant. before gene was born, she had gotten pregnant, and the wealth family's mistress (mrs. otto) locked her up in terrible conditions until the baby was born because she was jealous that she couldn't have a kid. after the servant's baby died due to his mother's abuse during pregnancy, the hair of te baby was used to make the doll, robert. and scarily enough, the doll's hair has turned gray over the years

Recently visited Key West and did a Ghosts and Legends Tour. I have watched TV shows about Ghosts but Robert has fascinated me. I did not get a chance to visit the museum but plan on going back and that will be my 1st stop. However, I will be very cautious to not upset him, I have heard he can reak havoc on visitors. Peace Robert!

I do believe in supernatural. However I also believe in exercising a bit of skeptism as well. I do believe that a doll can be possessed by some kind of conscious entity that can animate its self in some way we refer to as supernatural by all means. However, why no traces of the Ottos or servants?

Being in Key West numerous times and being a native of Fl , I had to indulge in the ghosts and legends tour. I haven't visited Robert the doll yet, but I will when I return there soon. I took pictures of the Otto house and got great results - 4 clear and beautiful orbs in all. Yep, I believe it!

About three weeks ago, I took a ghost tour and visited Robert at East Martello Museum. When I first took a glance at Robert, I was in a different room! Staring right at me, with beaty eyes, Robert! He did not talk or anything. But when I decided not to take a picture, good luck, Robert! 20 dollars!

Hello to all you fellow Squidooer's,
Where do I start... I am married with two grown children, (Peyton and Eric), along with two wonderful in law children (Randy and Liz), and two great Grandchildren (Cullen and Bryn). My education is in science, and Nursing. I recently left nursing to pursue other interests. I write, and publish resources articles online. I am also part owner of several Internet businesses. One of which is a well known online antique auction site.

I have many passions, traveling, decorating, gardening, and just about any arts and crafty thing you could think of. I have a busy life, and that's the way I like it... I have just recently gotten into the study of wine, and wine making. I hope as I become increasingly knowledgeable on the subject, I can pass my new found knowledge on to my visitors-- here at Squidoo...

From its ancient history, to the growth of the grapes, to our wine glasses, and everything in-between. Lets explore wine...

How it changed my life:
Very strange story. (And people say the Robert is now "aging" and his hair is turning gray.) I have no clue what to make of him. ;)
