Anything But Simplicity
Starring Nina Dobrev and Dillon Casey as Jessica Madsen and Max Grayson, the 20-year-old young parents of their 5-year-old daughter. Both at 15, Jessica and Max became parents to their daughter, Sydney, which had definitely caused them and their families some contraversy in their small Chicago area suburb of Arken Falls, Illinois. Jessica and Max were bound and determine to raise their daughter (not giving her up for adoption, like many had suggested), along with the help from both of their parents and close friends. Each had to make some sacrifices to make things work out as they try to raise their daughter while both continuing high school. Jessica gave her up love for gymnastics and dance, as Max struggled with having to cut back on time with his friends and having to work his part-time job. Due to becoming parents at such a young age, the relationship between Max and Jessica hasn't always been peachy and easy-going. Since Sydney's birth, they sure have had their share of trials and tribulations, ups and downs during their relationship, despite their strong love for each other.
Jessica and Max still manage to find time to hangout with their best friends: Max's long-time childhood best friend, Justin Breckman (Bug Hall); Jessica's 13-months-younger close sister, Jennifer "Jenny" Madsen (Shenae Grimes); and Jessica's best friend/Max's cousin, Lindsay Schaeffer (Lauren Collins). Max, Jessica, Justin, Jenny, and Lindsay now all attend the same local community college, but with different majors. Max, Justin, and Lindsay are majoring in business management/business administration, Jessica is majoring in nursing, and Jenny is majoring in cosmetology.
Jessica and Max each still live with their parents until they can afford to move out on their own, meanwhile Sydney lives at both residences happily. Jessica's bi-racial parents (Irish-American father, Cuban-American mother), Rick and Christina Madsen (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Constance Marie) live happily married, proud parents of Jessica and Jenny, and truly adore their granddaughter. Rick works as a firefighter/paramedic, as Christina works as a dance instructor and works part-time at a hair salon. Whereas, Max's parents, Brian and Sarah Grayson (Mark Derwin, Bonnie Hunt) once were high school sweethearts who's marriage is starting to fizzle, due to the stresses of their son becoming a dad at age of 15. Brian works as an accountant, and Sarah works as a real estate agent.
Watch how the young parents, their own parents, and their friends -not to mention little Sydney- dealing with their complicated lives and difficult everyday situations.
