No worries! I know the person wasnt interviewed on UM but there was a case of two sisters who were abducted by their mom. Candice and Sharina Berry well their brother aged 22 died suddenly in December 2015.

Linda Sherman's brother Dennis Lutz, who was interviewed in the segment about her case, died back in January of this year, age 68.

Helen Root, who was one of Dr. Gregory Caplinger's patients, died in March 2005. Her cancer had recurred and that's what killed her. Her husband William Root, who was also in the segment, died in September 2014.

Sad, because she was only 49, but I'm positive it's her. Besides "Terris" being an uncommon name, the names of many of the family members listed also match those interviewed or mentioned in the segment.

There's certainly a wealth on public information online. Of course, in order to be sure that you have the right person (particularly if they have a common name), it definitely helps to know more than one or two things about a person. I was the one who made the Find A Grave memorials of Ingerborg Southern and Russell Evans, once I found out where they were buried. Charles Southern's father died in 1998, three years after the Unsolved Mysteries segment. I don't know what the "O" in both his and Charles Jr's middle name, as I could not find that anywhere. His sister Cheryl is still living and is still a doctor, based in Indianapolis.

I am not familiar with her case. What happened?

Born in Talbot Co, she was the daughter of the late James Elmer and Mary Horney Davenport. Mrs. Kemp attended St. Michaels High School in Talbot Co. After moving to Silver Spring, MD she worked as a Manager with Quality Inn. Then moved to Salisbury and worked as a Manager of Avis rental car at the Salisbury Airport.
Mrs. Kemp is survived by her daughter; Kathryne L. Dobe and her husband Ray of Bel Air, MD., two Grandchildren; Raymond Dobe III and his wife Michele, of York, PA, and Kristen Dobe, of Bel Air. Three Great-grandchildren; Chance, Kara, and Cort, a devoted sister-in-law Diane Davenport of Salisbury. Also many nieces and nephews. It's not surprising to hear about a lot of these, considering that their cases were featured around 30 years ago. I think the ones that make me the saddest are Duncan Gilmore and Gord McCallister. Obviously McCallister was elderly, so it's to be expected, but I remember seeing how absolutely heartbroken he looked over the death of his wife. I'm glad he was able to remarry and find some happiness. Sad that Duncan died at a relatively young age - I always found his story particularly heartwarming, especially how excited his wife was for him when she saw the segment about his daughter.

On another note - I watch reruns of UM on a local broadcast channel (unfortunately, they only air Dennis Farina reruns, because apparently the licensing for the Robert Stack episodes are separate), and many of the updates note that the wanted suspects were captured, served their time, and were released. After watching the segments, there's a feeling of wanting the "bad guy" to be caught and sent to jail - it's a little disappointing hearing about these people being released, many of them too early for my taste considering what they did.

Captain Charles "Chuck" Scherer of the Coral Gables Police Dept in the late 80's and early 90's who was interviewed on the Judith Hyams segment passed away on April 28, 2014

James Breckenridge, Brenda Bowen's father, died on June 4th this year, age 86. You may remember the case, where Jerry Bowen killed his ex-wife Brenda, rolled her body up in a comforter and threw her body in the water. He was arrested some years later and is in prison for life.

A little late, but thank you 1990 UM fan for posting these. It was interesting to see the Russell Evans grave. Both his parents passed away now too, and neither was very old. Makes you wonder if the stress of it all shortened their life spans. Poor people. :(

Just came across another one that may come as a shock to anyone who doesn't already know, but I discovered that Wayne Hecker, Tara Breckenridge's boyfriend and the prime suspect in her disappearance (though I've always been very much on the fence about whether or not he's guilty), died from cancer brought on by heavy drug use in October 2015 at about the age of 45 (give or take a couple of years; I couldn't find it exactly).

Kari Lynn Nixon's youngest sibling, her brother Johnathan, died on December 3, 2007 after battling ALS. I just found out earlier that their father Gary died on August 28, 2011, age 63.

Dr. Thomas Starzl, the famous liver transplant surgeon who operated on Eric Danowski, and was interviewed in the segment about it, died on 3/4/17. He was 90.

So after watching an episode on season 3. I found out Kay Beeman has also passed away

The good news from that segment is that no other family members have died from the heart condition since the UM broadcast. Luckily they were able to find a diagnosis. What a relief as I can't imagine going through every day thinking your heart was a ticking time bomb...

I didn't realize that. Sadly, FBI agent (and family friend) featured in the story, Fred C. Stofer, passed away that very same year. He died suddenly from a heart attack.

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned by anyone, but I found where Donald Barrow passed away in March 2016 in VA nursing home in Fayetteville, NC. He was the long lost little brother of "Baby X", Mary Jane Medlin-Polk, who was found abandoned and severely beaten at age 2 in 1947. This was featured in season 5 of UM. Also, and I'm not 100% positive, but I believe that Mary Jane and Donald 's sister, Leoma Crane, who was also interviewed, died in 2008 of colon cancer.

Charlie Best's daughter who I think was featured in the segment passed away in 2014. Charlie Best had passed away a couple weeks after reuniting w/one of the girls he cared for when he was younger,

Walter Luttmer, the uncle that Meredith Atkinson reunited with along her mother Rose Marie, died in 1998 at the age of 74. I'm actually not sure what the story is with Rose Marie, but since she was 78 and in poor health in 1994 (when the reunion took place), it's pretty unlikely that she would still be around nowadays.

I wanted to make an update and correction to this post that I originally submitted back in 2011. Meredith Atkinson's uncle Walter Luttmer actually died in January of this year. He was 89. And her mother, Rose Marie Luttmer LaBauve, died at 82 in July, 1998. On a surprise side note, I also discovered that Meredith Atkinson herself has been deceased since 1998. Not sure what she died of, but she was only 60 years old.

I get the impression that some of these folks have led a much harder life than you or I. No offense is meant by that statement, but I just think that having these traumatic things happen weighs on you.

I think a lot of the people mentioned on UM who passed away at a young age could've died of a broken heart. It could also be stress related issues that truly had an affect on their health

Thanks to UM, they were reunited in 1992 (along with Mary), though it was considered one of the more awkward reunions in the show's history, due to the fact that the daughter, Sherry Blackman, had a happy, well-adjusted life and was initially hesitant about embracing this sudden and unexpected surprise, since she had no prior knowledge of Mac up to that point. Fortunately, she did warm to the reality of Mac being her father, though it is unclear whether or not they built up a lasting relationship following the reunion.

Indeed. And the segment alters her picture to show what she might look like after her 15 year absence at the age of 48! It's pretty crazy.

A couple of her kids were teenagers at the time of her disappearance so mathematically, she must have gotten married and started a family as a teenager herself. And I believe she went on to have six kids total.

Point taken. I felt the same way about Gail Delano when I saw her picture. I'm older than she was at the time of her death and I'm confident I photograph much younger than she.

It looks like Sherry eventually left Denver and moved to Palm Springs, California. I do not know whether or not her mom is still living.

I felt that the reunion was a bit cold to watch. I do not want to sound harsh to both the daughter and the father, but their first meeting didn't seem to be as warm as we've seen elsewhere.

Point taken. I felt the same way about Gail Delano when I saw her picture. I'm older than she was at the time of her death and I'm confident I photograph much younger than she.

Gail Delano also looked a lot older than her age. Deborah Poe was 26 but in the pictures, she looked to be in her mid 30s (IMO)

I just found out recently that Kevin Arnold, the police officer who became involved in a high-speed chase (and eventually a physical altercation) with Michael Mohon on New Year's Eve in 1983, has been dead since 1995. I don't know any details, other than that he was only 34. If anybody knows any more about this, I would be curious to know.

I know that her segment has gotten some flack but I always found her story interesting and unfortunately because my sense of humor is a bit demented my first though when hearing she died was, "Well she'll be back anyway. Hopefully she will remember more next time!" I know...bad sense of humor.

I have enjoyed reading everyone's posts even on the couple other threads I've read. The UM community on this tie really seems to care for the show and the people involved. Just wanted to say a quick hello and take care everyone!

Rose Hoffman, mother of Gus Hoffman, died on September 1, 2017. I didn’t realize she was still living until last year, but learned tonight she passed away last fall. She was a true champion.

Just came across another one that may come as a shock to anyone who doesn't already know, but I discovered that Wayne Hecker, Tara Breckenridge's boyfriend and the prime suspect in her disappearance (though I've always been very much on the fence about whether or not he's guilty), died from cancer brought on by heavy drug use in October 2015 at about the age of 45 (give or take a couple of years; I couldn't find it exactly).

I just watched this segment for the first time in years and felt compelled to see what Wayne Hecker was up to these days, I didn’t realize he had died. Here’s a pic of him from before he died, I’d say pretty close to his final days by the looks of him. I am also on the fence as to if he did it or not.

It's a shame that Fritz died only 5 years after that segment, and still on the young side. I remember Keely said that Ralph Blanc was in poor health during the update, so chances are he passed away shortly after that. It's just good that they got to meet again.
Very sad that fritz died so young. He is one of my favorite people from the show. Such a wonderful story that was and an even more improbable reunion. I have long been fascinated by his story and would love to visit the location of where he lived in the Ardennes.

The mother of Lorraine Echevarria (cured after a trip to Lourdes), whose name was also Lorraine, died on July 3, 2015, age 74. She was interviewed in the Lourdes segment with her husband and daughter.

Muriel Gartner, Tim Harrell's bioligical mother, passed away in December 2017. That episode's ending always made me smile a bit, especially the part where they hug at the very end as they are discussing their reunion.

This isn't someone interviewed on UM, but I just saw that Kurt Sova's other brother, Kenneth, passed away in Sept. 2017. He was 57. Kurt's father (Ken) and mother (Dorothy), have both already passed, as well as his other brother, Keith (in 2014). Only one brother left now. And they've all been fairly young. Kay Tatum from the Tatum Haunted House segment died in 2001 at the age of 73. At that time, her husband Jim was still alive, but I'm not sure if he still is at this point.

Rhonda Bousselot's death kind of bum's me out because she passed so young (40). And although I was never really a fan of the ghost segments I found her to be more credible than most.

Not sure if they've been mentioned here, but both of Lynn Amos' parents and her only sister have died in the years since Lynn's murder. Her father Walter died on October 26, 1999 (age 76), sister Leslie Presley on August 2, 2001 (age 46) and mother Helen on June 8, 2004 (age 77). Her brother is still living.

Probably one of the saddest "side character" stories in the history of UM. Not only did he lose a baby and another child at 23 after a long illness, the poor guy had his then infant stolen away from him even though he wasn't charged or convicted of any crime!

Barney Dewey passed away a couple of months ago. I’m not a big fan of the Lost Love segments, but his story definitely hit me right in the feels. I was genuinely happy that he was able to be reunited with his sister after being separated for over 50 years.

Looks to be her. I discovered that her husband Paul died in 1980, four years after Sarah lost her memory. He was only 44 years old.

Brenda Abbey passed away last August at the age of 69. She was the woman from Virginia who searched for her birth parents at hundreds of different carnivals over the course of three decades before appearing on UM. She found her birth mother and all eleven of her brothers and sisters after her story was aired. Brenda Abbey passed away last August at the age of 69. It maybe the latter, because his wife (Bonnie's mom) was interviewed on Dateline. She believed Michael was innocent, but now not so much.

Dorothy Lang was the 'Mom' in the Edward Harold Bell (i.e. Matthew McConaughey portraying Larry Dickens) episode. She lived to the age of 84 before passing away in July 2012.

What's most amazing to me is that Dr. Weiss, Jr. not only kept his original name despite it's infamy but he even went so far as to become a doctor like his late father had been AND bravely fought to clear his late father's name (and gave his own firstborn son the name -and said son is now the third generation of doctors). Donald Stradt, who was looking for his little sitter and found her 52 years after being separated from her, thanks to Unsolved Mysteries' viewers, passed away on July 27, 2018, at the age of 82.

It was a very emotional segment with a heartwarming follow-up. He seemed a man with a big heart.

I remember when I took a Journalism class in college, we were taught the official way to write an obituary. People are given the same respect regardless if you were a good person or a scum sucking killer. And since the information is usually provided by a loved one, it's pretty much a glowing review. You have to put bias aside.

With that said....holy crap that obituary was nauseating to read. You're passionate about being a support system for children, loving animals and despising human trafficking yet you have no problem with throwing a woman off a boat and running her over repeatedly because she turned down your sexual advances? And the fact that he showed next to no remorse after doing what he did? I am also skeptical about the obituary for Eleanor Wozniak because it listed three children but not one of them was the daughter that was found on the show. Also, if memory serves me correct in the segment it mentioned that she re-married but never had any other children and her husband was also childless. I don't think either of these people are John Elias or Eleanor Wozniak from the show.

I don't think the John Elias in the story is dead yet? He was 11 years older than Eleanor according to the story, placing his birth year around 1924 or 1925. It's hard to tell without a photo but the ones from 2008 and 2011 are not him through the research I and others have done.

Logan had a lot of developmental disabilities because of what he went through as an infant. Knowing what I've heard about kids in similar situations, they don't usually live a regular life span. I would assume that's the case here, so he likely died of natural causes.

Sounds like he was a wonderful young man. It was encouraging to read his obituary, and I hope his family is at peace with his passing. RIP, Logan...

I've been busy researching lately, and I will have another unfortunately lengthy list posted in a day or two, but here are a couple that I thought were definitely worth mentioning.

Dr. Stephan Ross (aka Szmulec Rozental), the Holocaust survivor who spent years searching for one of the American soldiers who liberated him from concentration camp only to find out that the man had died years before the broadcast, died on February 24th of this year at the age of 88.

Laura Frankland, Delia Fazzani's daughter, died in 2019 at the age of 54. I'm not sure of the circumstances, but an interesting and unfortunate thing that I did find out is that her (Laura's) husband also died a couple of years earlier at a relatively young age.

Carol and Donald Burlingame, who were once the owners of Beaty Castle have since died, Donald in 2007 at the age of 71 and Carol in 2018 at the age of 81.

Frank Casteel, the Tennessee ATV killer died in 2019 at the age of 71.

Shirley Halliday Rhodes, the mother of Janie Halliday Shamo from the Guardian Angels segment (the lady who fell down the Grand Canyon when she was a teenager but somehow managed to make it back to the top unharmed) died in 2016 at the age of 88.

Todd Skinner, the friend of Amy and Steve Bechtel who was interviewed in the segment was killed in a mountain climbing accident in 2006. He was 47.

Martha Brown Smith, searching for her twin brother Bobby (the one who held her head under water when they were foster children) died in 1995 at the age of only 44. Why she died at such a young age and why it wasn't known until recently is unknown.

Virginia Snyder, the private investigator who appeared in the Amy Billig and Bird Road Rapist segments died in 2017 at the age of 96.

Maury Terry, author of the book "The Ultimate Evil" and interviewed in the Son Of Sam segments died in 2015 at the age of 69.

Marlys Thomas, who spent years searching unsuccessfully for her daughter Mary Agnes Gross (and who had been told that she had died as an infant) died in 2012 at the age of 70.

Ada Underwood, the sister that the Best family was reunited with just a few weeks before the death of Charlie Best, died in 2007 at the age of 74 or 75. Sadly, I'm pretty sure that everyone who was interviewed (or even mentioned) in that segment is now gone.

This says that man was from Iowa, whereas the one in the segment was from Ohio. How do we know it's the same guy if there's no other corroborating evidence (ex. photo of him)?

Both of Michael Rosenblum's parents have since died. His father Maurice died on January 22, 2008 and his mother Barbara died on May 6, 2018.

That's sad, although I can't say I'm surprised. He looked a lot older than he was in the UM segment - so many people of that era seemed to do the same. Pity he never got to find out what happened to Chance.

Logan had a lot of developmental disabilities because of what he went through as an infant. Knowing what I've heard about kids in similar situations, they don't usually live a regular life span. I would assume that's the case here, so he likely died of natural causes.

Sounds like he was a wonderful young man. It was encouraging to read his obituary, and I hope his family is at peace with his passing. RIP, Logan...

As the sister of a young man born with severe developmental disabilities, I can confirm this. My brother Adam was born with congenital encephalopathy, cerebral palsy, and a seizure disorder. I realize that Logan was not born with these conditions but acquired them due to the incident featured on UM, but the end results are largely the same - people with developmental disabilities are often limited in their movements, which does not allow them to build muscle, including cardiac development. Many cannot chew or even swallow food, which makes getting the proper nutrients more challenging. Depending on the extent of their disabilities, they are more susceptible to injury and lack either the understanding to know or the ability to tell someone when something doesn't feel right. In Adam's case, he was nonverbal, incontinent, confined to a wheelchair, and suffered lifelong issues with constipation, which is common among people with mobility challenges. Given these factors, he developed colon cancer, which is usually normally fairly treatable if caught early, but due to his conditions, the staff at the group home he lived at didn't become aware of his condition until it was far too late. He died in 2016 at the age of 41. Having lived through this pain myself, I'm so sorry for Logan's family and friends.

Brenda Abbey passed away last August at the age of 69. She was the woman from Virginia who searched for her birth parents at hundreds of different carnivals over the course of three decades before appearing on UM. She found her birth mother and all eleven of her brothers and sisters after her story was aired. A happy side note to her story was that after meeting her long lost siblings, she became extremely close with them and even relocated to Michigan to live near them and spent the last 20 years of her life with her “new” family. Her story was one of the most unique Lost Love segments to ever appear on UM and definitely had one of the happiest outcomes of them all. RIP.

The update for her segment, filmed with Brenda leaving the carnival and the lights shutting off behind her, with the Robert Stack voiceover, "it seemed she might be out of options....until the night of our broadcast." is one of my favorite and I think most compelling moments in show history. It's great she got resolution before she died.

Not funny what happened to him but the segment made me laugh. Because the kidnapper was totally out of shape. And a bungler, lost his notes or something. RS narration of the episode made me chuckle too. Then the authorities went after the wrong guy. Who sort of fit the description. I guess they never found the guy. They should of looked in a rundown motel near Bismarck, ND.

Funny what you learn about some of these folks. This man seemed quirkily endearing, like your favorite college prof. I immediately smile when he first comes on the screen. It's a safe bet he would have been very entertaining at parties! The role of war hero never came to mind.

In case it hasn't already been mentioned, there is another UM interviewee who has passed away. Although I cannot remember the woman's name, she was interviewed on the show during the 1996-97 season. It was a lost loves segment, and the woman in question was looking for blood relatives. This search was an extremely important one because the woman was ill (although I can't recall specifically what the ailment was).

Sadly, when the segment was rerun on Lifetime, it ended with a text saying that she had died in 1998. It was terrible enough that her life ended too soon, but the worst thing about it was that she died without having any resolution to her search. :(

13 yrs late but I was just watching an episode with this case and it turns out she did manage to find her sister before dying(however their bone marrow was not compatible) .. the sister was very happy and enthusiastic to be found which is nice to know because that means diane was probably very happy herself at that point .. she even remembered diane's bday which was, coincidentally enough, the day of the reunion and brought her a cake .. it said she died 'soon' after the reunion but who knows how long that means .. hopefully they were able to spend some significant amount of time together before she passed

The one who died in 1998 was Gale Samuels, not Dyann Hahnlein. Gale had myelodysplastic syndrome and needed a blood donor from a biological relative. Unlike Dyann, Gale Samuels never knew her birth family. Sadly, Gale Samuels died on October 7, 1998, age 48, without ever finding a biological relative. I often wonder if her adoptive family continued to search for Gale's biological family after she died? DNA and genealogical sites could help so much today.
