What do you mean by outdated? Do you mean like the styles in the show, or do you mean the actual episodes and jokes, as in shows that just aren't good today as they were back in the day?

If you mean the styles in the show, wouldn't that be nearly every show that isn't from this decade?-LOL

Otherwise I think most things hold up well in my experience but I think some have problems with ideas of a woman's place in older shows like I Love Lucy and the lack of cellphones and modern computers in older shows sometimes lead to an inability to relate amongst some younger people not looking deeper beneath the surface dressing these days that was not necessarily a problem for some of growing up in the 80s and 90s looking at shows from the 70s and back. As different as things were, they are not as different as things now are. Still, I think people can get past these hangups.


Still, in good humor, Magnum's shorts and mustache, any instance of a computer with a reel to reel or microfiche in Doctor Who's future, Dalek's with Lava Lamps, but that was the movie.

That was my exact point. Every decade had its own styles and such, which is why nearly ever show from 1950-2005 is outdated. This thread makes no sense to me :lol:

Well, like every show that centered around slapstick comedy is outdated because no comedy really does that now...

I think only the first season or two of Friends seems dated (Chandler has a laptop in one episode and rattles off these pathetic technical specs for it). But the majority of the series feels current, half of it was in this decade anyway. There are plently of cell phones (modern-looking ones too, not Zack Morris phones) and the jokes certainly feel current, being that they didn't use topical humor.

I do agree that Seinfeld can seem dated at times, but that also ended 10 years ago already.
Raymond doesn't feel outdated to me yet.
But all of those old shows, of course.

I don't think so either. Except maybe "Alf". Alf was often wise-cracking about things, that happened right then in the 80s.

I was going to disagree with Seinfeld being outdated, but now that I think about it, I guess it kind of is. Especially the clothing and the things they talked about. Of course at the time, those were current events so I guess you can't help but have those things be outdated. And Jerry's computer is pretty outdated as well. None of them have cell phones and in one episode, Jerry's car gets stolen so George tells him to call the car phone and Jerry starts having a conversation with the guy who stole his car!:rotflmao:

However, the general things they talk about is what makes Seinfeld so great; like the placement of a button on a shirt; Jerry's parents keeping their house so hot, etc. Things that are still relevant today. Now that's classic!

I don't know, as I never saw the first 3, and I haven't seen "ALF" in 20 years.

I read that they purposely kept "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" from being outdated, by not having any slang words and expressions, not having, say, Laura get a job working for civil rights, not having a cousin who has become a hippie, etc. Like on "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES" when they had those hippies who thought Granny was neat because she "smoked crawdads" (which is slang for marijuana) and that STUPID womens lib storyline.

I remember someone saying a show from the past will never be outdated but I can't remember what it was.

There are a few things which dates a TV program - attitudes toward smoking, toward pregnancy and childbirth and toward hospital care. Lucy was seen smoking and drinking while pregnant; Ricky also smoked around her. When she gave birth, Rcky was only allowed to dee the baby behind a glass window. Lucy stayed in the hospital for at least a week after childbirth. Dick van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore both smoked on the Dick van Dyke show in their house and in restaurants (in NY of all places).

That is SO true! If something still makes you laugh that aired in the 50's that's a good sign that it's not really that outdated. Otherwise people wouldn't find it funny at all!

Obviously aspects of every show (particularly in terms of fashion and "gadgets") are outdated but I think in terms of the show being outdated because of its content then I think Family Ties is one that stands out, because that show is very much about the 80s era - I think Murphy Brown is like that in many cases as well

Many shows like Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Cheers, and others seem to transcend time and its only trivial things and occasional jokes that are dated

it was probably "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW", because, as I said before, they purposely didn't put in any slang terms from the 60s, or anything to keep it fresh.
There were little things, though, like the clothes, smoking, Laura and Millie stayed home all day while their husbands worked, they smoked, and a couple times they were watching home movies on an old reel-to-reel projector.

I don't know, as I never saw the first 3, and I haven't seen "ALF" in 20 years.

Just curious... Why would Mad Men be out of date? Maybe the clothing styles but it's a relatively new show and it's supposed to look like a 60's show!;)
I think it's a great show and it's really authentic. They've done a good job with it.

while watching "DALLAS" I always laugh at how "80s" that looks!:lol: :lol:

Shows where they have to get up to change the channel on the TV, shows that portrayed hunters and gunowners in a positive fashion, showing the characters ordering stuff or browsing through a catalog in contrast to ordering or browsing online may be considered outdated by younger viewers, as well as any show featuring 8tracks, cassettes, and albums.

A show that is really outdated today is Married With Children. Back in the day it was cutting edge and very funny. Today you watch an episode and it's sophmoric, predictible and lame.

Listening to that studio audience on MWC is downright embarassing--all those hoots, hollers, and overzealous applause for whenever Al, Bud, Peggy, or Kelly walked in a room.....

sort of like Happy Days too

and all those "right ons" you can hear from the Good Times audience.

To me the show that has not stood the test of time is Get Smart. All those state of the art, high tech gadgets, and spy gear are no longer high tech or state of the art. Did you notice Max's shoe phone is a rotary dial phone?!?!:wave:
