View Full Version : The Fraternity Rents A Room

OH Nuts!

Another one of my favorite eps and a classic ep of the series IMO. This is the one where Wally Cox guests as the nerdy Eco prof who piles on TONS and TONS of homework. He needs a room - bad- and Rick & Wally really goof when they accidentally "offer" it to him. The poor guys - Prof Paterson really cramps their style. A real charmer of an ep. - esp. that really nice pillow fight Rick and Wally have. This was one of the first eps I came across - back in '97

Interesting. I recall always being bored with the episodes heavily featuring Rick's fraternity. I will have another look at this episode, as maybe I haven't given it a chance.

Personally, I think its one of the best (if not the best) of the fraternity themes. But if you don't care for the frat themes, then I certainly understand why you feel the way you do.

I do know what you mean abt liking certain eras and themes of the show. It went on for so long (14 seasons) that there were several underlying themes. The wisecracking neighbor Thorny, the boys as kids, Rick dating and emerging as a rock idol, the frat years, working in the law office, The Tigers, Wally & Ginger, the boys marriages, Ozzie and his sometimes goofy & mooching friends - it's easy to not take a liking to one or two of them. Like, I'm not fondest of the first 2 yrs but there are eps here and there in that pd that really stood out (at least to me) like Ozzie's Night Out. Never cared for the kiddie eps like the Tigers either. But of course was happy to see any ep of this FINE series at least once. And the eps that are GREAT...well...they just send me to the moon and back.

BTW, are you a Golden Girls/Sophia Petrillo fan? Cause if you are I  the show & esp. Sophia- she was my favorite one of all although I REALLY LIKED all of them. The show hung together better than practically any other show I can imagine. And what a wonderful swipe it took at agism--and always with pathos or fine humor -- that to me the GGs is one of TV's peaks and certainly is in my top 15 of best shows ever. As for Sophia, I just loved that feisty little firecracker, may she & Estelle rest in peace.

Yes indeed, The Golden Girls is my favorite show ever! It practically got me through high school. What a joy to own the DVDs now instead of the pile substandard taped versions I watched over and over back then. I'm not sure what made me choose to name myself after Sophia's wrinkles, of all things. But that was 6 years ago (I can't believe I'm just now about to have my 100th post) so who knows what was going through my mind.

Anyway, my first exposure to O&H was through the Mill Creek 100 episode set, which is wonderful. I also have the first Shout release, which is also good even with the unfortunate edits. Additionally, I downloaded some of the old radio shows which I haven't listened to yet. I really hope to someday see all 14 seasons of the television series. Although it may not happen on DVD, someday when the costs and means to distribute television series are different, I'm sure we'll see them. I look forward to it.

Yes the GG was a brilliant show with a great cast. I only have 2 seasons of it on DVD but that may change in time. So many funny eps...I love the one where Sophia and Blanche fight over the same man!

Re O & H, yes the Mill Creek Set is just wonderful. A real bang for your buck. And some of the eps have commercials - which you don't see too often on the DVD sets. And the Shout! sets are very nice too - esp. the first one.

Wally Cox was excellent in this episode. Who would you say was the biggest or most famous guest star ever to appear on the series?

I don't know. It does seem though that one thing Ozzie didn't do was go for gimmicks in stunt casting to bring in ratings. He stuck to trying to make a relatable and good story. I guess he left it up to other shows to parade around their Hollywood friends in guest spots.

there are lot of people on the show who became BIGGER stars after their guest appearance or were on other shows, but I don't recall O&H ever having big name guest stars, other than Wally Cox.

Wally Cox was probably the best known actor, but Linda Evans went on to make a name for herself too. James Burton, the guitar player, is definitely a widely known name in the music business. June Blair was better known for her acting before appearing on the show. I don't think she ever did any acting afterwards.

Well, we could always list those who went on to bigger things

such as Kent McCord of "Adam-12"--on O&H he was credited as Kent McWhirter

Jeannine Riley--who already had done "Petticoat Junction" at this point and later on would do "Hee Haw" and the short-lived "Dusty's Trail".

The Livingston brothers--Stanley and Barry, who both would go on to bigger fame on "My Three Sons".

Jerry Mathers was on one episode before Leave it to Beaver.
Dick Sergant was on an episode before being Darren #2 on Bewitched.
Roberta Shore was doing some Disney movies around the time she was on Ozzie and Harriet, such as The Shaggy Dog.

Dwayne Hickman of Dobbie Gillis was on one episode. Cheryl Holdridge was also in a few episodes, never that famous, but was on Leave It To beaver and some Disney shows. James Stacy played a fraternity brother in a few show too.

John Carradine was a big guest star ("An Evening with Hamlet." Season 2) -- probably the biggest I can think of.

Also, Penny Edwards must have been fairly well-known (she had dated Ronald Reagan) prior to her appearance on "A Cruise for Harriet" (Season 6, plus at least one other appearance).

I'm sorry, but I'm a 'youngin' lol Who is John Carradine?

Donna Douglas was in an episode that I recently watched. Not famous then, but a known name, now.

Lori Saunders before she was Lori Saunders, was in a handful of episodes as Linda Hines.

Edgar Buchanan was in one.

Tuesday Weld & Mamie Van Doren were pretty famous.

Out of the mouths of babes ;) Just kidding !!!

John Carradine was the patriarch of the Carradine family. His sons are David [Kung Fu], Robert [Revenge of the Nerds] and Keith Carradine, and others. Grandfather of Martha Plimpton [Parenthood].

He was in lots of movies, but the only one I remember seeing him in was, ''The Howling''.

Congrats CJ on FINALLY breaking the 100 post barrier

Thanks !!! I didn't notice that. WOW, took me almost 7 years to get there.

Actually, the first three posts under my name were by another ''CJ'' and before I signed up. So, technically I guess I am still under 100 :)

Thanks CJ for responding regarding John Carradine. He had been in films since the 1930s. Today he may be most readily seen in episodes of The Munsters, in his recurring role as Herman's boss at the mortuary.

Ozzie had a good eye regarding Lori Saunders, born Linda Marie Hines. She was married by 1960, however, so any matchmaking (for Rick) came to an end. At least one of her episodes, "Rick and the Maid of Honor" (1962) is easily found on DVD, in which her character Linda marries Jimmy from the fraternity. A good episode, also featuring Roberta Shore, whose character tries to get Rick in a matrimonial mood for herself!

I just watched "Ozzie the Babysitter", a last season color episode. Who was the kid--Barry Williams? The end credits were chopped off....boy I hate how the syndicated package did that.

No that wasn't Barry Williams. It does look a bit like Barry in the first season of Brady Bunch. But that's not him.

I think the kids real name is also Joel. I have seen him in an episode here and there in a few other shows from that time.

Not that it matters, but lol, his voice, and way of speaking always irritates me.

He is in a few epiosdes. One off the top of my head I can name is Rick's Assistant. Joel takes on a part time job at the law office. Essentially doing many duties Rick is suppose to be doing, He's Rick assistant. Joel is a little to good at it. Leaves Rick feeling sorry for himself, that an 11 yr old can do his job no problem.

I swear a very young Tracy Nelson is in this episode. Joel's class happens by for a little spontaneous field trip to visit where Joel works. There's a mess of kids there. One is quite a bit smaller than the rest. A little blonde girl. You can't see her to well in the mix of kids, and another child you can tell is escorting her. But in the small glimpse I bet it is a 2 year old Tracy.

I don't know what Dave's son looked like other wise I'd be looking for him too in there. lol
