Yes it will be back in January but it will be on ABC.

Season 7 was supposed to be the last season of the show but due to the writer's strike the crew was unable to wrap up the series with final episodes. Bill Lawrence (the creator) asked NBC if he could produce 3 or 4 new episodes in order to give the series closure. NBC only wanted an hour long special and Bill felt it wasn't enough. ABC had been eyeing the series and finally picked it up. Season 8 will consist of 18 episodes.
