View Full Version : Famous stores/restaurants not in your area
Janice 08-07-2008, 11:09 PM There are no Red Lobster restaurants in Massachusetts. Many years ago, I ate there while vacationing in Florida.
I've never been to an Olive Garden. The nearest one is 20 miles away. I'm not that curious.
I've never been to JC Penney. There's one about 15 miles from me, but in a direction that I'm unfamiliar with.
I've been to Wal-Mart only once, in New Hampshire. It's too far away from me in Mass.
BarneyFife 08-07-2008, 11:18 PM We don't have a "In-N-Out Burger" Restaurant here in Nashville. I've always wondered what their food was like.
Wreckless 08-07-2008, 11:42 PM What's the place that has cheese cake bites? they sell sandwiches, desserts and some breakfast. Anyways, their are none of those nowhere near me in NJ.
PunkyP0WER 08-07-2008, 11:43 PM You're not missing anything, imo. I don't like the food at Olive Garden.
i love olive garden!!! their breadsticks are so delicious. but i'm italian so what do you expect!

I like Olive Garden. :D
dawsongirl 08-08-2008, 12:16 AM You're not missing anything, imo. I don't like the food at Olive Garden.
I was just going to say that same thing. Not worth the 80 min+ wait they quoted us once. We went to Red Lobster instead.
catlover79 08-08-2008, 12:19 AM I wish we had a Jack in the Box in Ohio. Every time I go to California, I make sure that I stop and grab a bite at JITB. I love their chicken strips!!!
dawsongirl 08-08-2008, 12:20 AM We have no Whataburger. It reminded me of Sonic, but it would still be cool to have one.
Steak and Shake. :( I have to go to Illinois.
White Castle.
I saw this neat-looking hot dog restaurant this week in Illinois...someone's Red Hots. I was like, I want one!
Circuit City. Bought my TV at one...in Kansas City. :(

Southern Hellraiser 08-08-2008, 12:22 AM What's the place that has cheese cake bites? they sell sandwiches, desserts and some breakfast. Anyways, their are none of those nowhere near me in NJ.
That's probably Sonic. I used to eat there all the time until I cut out fast food.
Anyway, some famous places that aren't around here are Reb Robin (their website said that they were expanding in MS), TGI Fridays, Target...and the list goes on.
Nighthawk76 08-08-2008, 12:22 AM White Castle.
Consider yourself lucky.

You don't like? Never been to one, but I like the frozen burgers they sell in grocery stores.
Nighthawk76 08-08-2008, 12:31 AM You don't like? Never been to one, but I like the frozen burgers they sell in grocery stores.
No way! Their burgers are not called sliders for nothing.

I use to love Whataburger, but they closed ours down back in the late 70's and never opened a new store here in Nashville. I'm hoping one day they come back to this area. And god, I couldn't live without Steak and Shake, their burgers are awesome. White Castle's are good, they look and taste just like Krystals. Their fries are the best!
dawsongirl 08-08-2008, 12:31 AM more...
Waffle House
Bubba Gump's....although it would lose something here because the one I went to was in Maui and you sat looking out at the ocean. Hard to beat that.

Yeah, Sonic, that's it, thanks for helping me with the tongue twister for a min.!
Not my all-time fav. food joint but good.

Wreckless 08-08-2008, 12:41 AM I can't believe a lot of yall don't have K-Mart or Walmarts near you lol.
treky 08-08-2008, 01:14 AM I didn't know that "JACK-IN-THE-BOX" is still around!
treky 08-08-2008, 01:18 AM SONIC, RED ROBIN, OLIVE GARDEN, (my support group went to one for lunch once, but I also didn't like their food; so that's a good thing!) WAFFLE HOUSE, SHONYS. I also never heard of BUBBA GUMPS.
Yooch 08-08-2008, 11:15 AM White Castle: We used to have them in NY and NJ when I was a kid. (I've tried the frozen WC hamburgers; they're ok, but don't have the same taste as the fresh ones.) If they built a WC around here, I'd be there a lot.
Hardee's Hamburgers: They were all over North Carolina when I was there while in the Army. Great place. Are they still around?
Anyone know if the Roy Rogers Roastbeef restaurants still exist? I don't know if they were in California, but I liked them, too.

Oh yes, Hardee's is still around. We have several of them in my area. I've heard of Roy Rogers Roastbeef, but i've never eaten there because we don't have them in my area.
EmoJoe 08-08-2008, 12:46 PM we don't have Sonic here. or Kroger which is apparently a big grocery store chain that i had never heard of until some of my online friends told me about it.
we dont have Jack in the Box either.

we dont have Jack in the Box either.
Kroger is the biggest grocery store chain in the south, atleast in my area anyways. We have three within a ten minute driving distance from me. Sonic Burger is pretty good, you don't go inside to order, they have speakers you order from and young girls bring your food out to you, sometimes they're on rollerskates. Some people give them tips for this service. I normally give them two or three dollars, depending on how cute they are. As for Jack In The Box, I tried to give ours to "catlover" in Cleveland:lol: , they blow!
Jude The Obscure 08-08-2008, 01:57 PM No Kroger here.
or the diner chain called "Johnny Rockets"--went to one in Katy, TX while on vacation. What a fun place!!
Number 9 Dream 08-08-2008, 06:36 PM SONIC'S!! OMG, they advertise their yummy food and ice cream all of the time on t.v., yet the nearest one is in PA or something...there's not one store on Long Island! :(
dawsongirl 08-08-2008, 08:52 PM Bubba Gump's is a chain?! i went to one in Times Square in NYC and thought that was the only one o_O LOL
Yeah...there's one in the Mall of America and one in Maui. Those are the only ones I know of.
catlover79 08-09-2008, 01:12 AM No way! Their burgers are not called sliders for nothing.
I agree. White Castle burgers - my stomach turns just thinking about them. puke:
BarneyFife 08-09-2008, 01:22 AM No Kroger here.

"Johnny Rockets', isn't that the place where the waitressess and waiters break out in dance while delivering the food to your table?
Nighthawk76 08-09-2008, 03:21 AM I agree. White Castle burgers - my stomach turns just thinking about them. puke:
Even people who like to eat White Castle burgers say that if they eat more than two that they get a really bad upset stomach.
PunkyP0WER 08-09-2008, 07:15 AM no sonic yet we seem to see a lot of their commercials and oddly i don't think we have one in our state. and pizza hut, it seems all the ones around me have went out of business. i can not find one in a 20-30 mile radius. and papa ginos, we have only 2 in the state that i know of but not anywhere close to me. papa ginos is my ultimate favorite.
Brian Damage 08-09-2008, 12:53 PM SONIC'S!! OMG, they advertise their yummy food and ice cream all of the time on t.v., yet the nearest one is in PA or something...there's not one store on Long Island! :(
TELL ME ABOUT IT!!! I have no idea why Sonic's adds run in the NYC area, when there isn't one anywhere around here.
catlover79 08-09-2008, 12:56 PM Even people who like to eat White Castle burgers say that if they eat more than two that they get a really bad upset stomach.
I believe it.
Brian Damage 08-09-2008, 12:59 PM Even people who like to eat White Castle burgers say that if they eat more than two that they get a really bad upset stomach.
That is very true, I guess it has to do with all the steamed grilling they do. They can mess with your stomach pretty bad.
EmoJoe 08-09-2008, 01:02 PM TELL ME ABOUT IT!!! I have no idea why Sonic's adds run in the NYC area, when there isn't one anywhere around here.
yeah ive never seen one in my life yet i see commercials for it all the time

That makes sense. Even the sight of those burgers makes me want to puke:!

They sure can.
Nighthawk76 08-09-2008, 01:22 PM That makes sense. Even the sight of those burgers makes me want to puke:!
How about a nice, juicy Whitle Castle burger, Monika? ;)
James 08-09-2008, 04:49 PM My turn:
This is not really a store, but I'll mention Conoco, Phillips 66, and Union 76. I mentioned them at the same time because they are all in the same corporate family. I'm probably the only one in Ohio that has a credit card with them! There used to be a bunch of Phillips 66's over in Indiana but they closed. There used to be 76's here in Ohio until 1997, but they became Citgo (and themselves became other brands like Marathon and Valero, thank God!).
I'd also mention In-N-Out, but they're in only four states--California, Nevada, Arizona, and now Utah. I was fortunate to eat at a couple of them last year on a trip out west. It seems to me that other than In-N-Out, my part of Ohio has all the restaurants I need. Of course, I'm not as picky as I used to be about wanting every chain under the sun because I am starting to favor the mom-and-pop chains, particularly when it comes to pizza.
James 08-09-2008, 04:55 PM Steak and Shake. :( I have to go to Illinois.
Actually, Cathy, Steak n Shake has locations in Iowa in Cedar Rapids, Coralville (outside Iowa City), Davenport, and Waterloo. See http://www.steaknshake.com/states/iow.asp.
Oh, and I forgot to add Whataburger to my list, which you mentioned, even though it's a regional chain in the south.
Ohio8 08-09-2008, 05:09 PM Sonic Drive-In. They're building one in Rossford, however, and I'll go there when it's open.
Ohio8 08-09-2008, 05:11 PM Hardee's. I make it a point to eat at the one in Willoughby (Vine St. at Ohio 2) when I'm in Cleveland. Well, once a year anyway.

:( Still to far to drive for lunch. Bring them West!
dawsongirl 08-09-2008, 06:47 PM Yeah, and everything they serve looks sooooooooo good!
It is. :) I love their tator tots...and burgers (onion lovers would love them too)...chicken...breakfast sandwiches....ice cream...
They're the only fast food place around here that serves breakfast all day and that's a + in my book.
Lodee 08-09-2008, 06:58 PM We've got a Steak n Shake here in Michigan. Is that closer?
In our town we don't have:
In-N-Out
Sonic (but we have the ads here too  )
Old Navy
Macy's
Jack In The Box
White Castle
and about 600 more!
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 08-09-2008, 08:27 PM No starbucks around here that I know of, not that I like coffee or related items anyway.
I see Papa John's ads all the time but I have yet to see one. We have enough pizza places here anyway.
Sonic, White Castle...I didn't even know White Castle was a place until that movie came out. Jack in the Box, Red Robbin...both I see ads for but have never seen or been in one.
catlover79 08-09-2008, 09:28 PM Hardee's. I make it a point to eat at the one in Willoughby (Vine St. at Ohio 2) when I'm in Cleveland. Well, once a year anyway.
I know that place very well!!! The on-ramp across from the Hardee's is the one I use to drive to church.
Janice 08-09-2008, 09:39 PM The same goes for Olive Garden. They advertise heavily in my area, but the nearest one is 20 miles away. I'm not traveling 40 miles round-trip for any restaurant.
The good news is that I live a stone's throw from Outback Steakhouse.
Jude The Obscure 08-09-2008, 09:46 PM "Johnny Rockets', isn't that the place where the waitressess and waiters break out in dance while delivering the food to your table?
I honestly don't recall that! I remember them being dressed in '50s diner uniforms like those white hats guys wore in restaurants. The food was pricey for standard fare like burgers and fries, but it was just the atmosphere and attiude that made it a fun place.
As for Sonic, we have had one in our town far longer than we had McDonald's or Burger King!
Chains I miss:
Burger Chef
Mr. Burger
catlover79 08-09-2008, 09:48 PM When I went to Chicago with my church youth group in 1997, we ate at an Ed DeBevic's. THAT was a fun experience. Sadly, we don't have any in the Cleveland area. :(
spunkygirl 08-09-2008, 11:12 PM Hardee's, we used to have a Long John Silver's but not anymore *cries* :(
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 08-10-2008, 01:54 AM I've never even heard of a Hardee's...
dawsongirl 08-10-2008, 05:38 PM I've never even heard of a Hardee's...

Thats the one i was talking about Jude. They give you a little entertaiment while you're eating your meal. The first and only time i've ever been to Johnny Rockets, the servers started dancing while they were bringing the food to the tables. Me and my girlfriend looked at each other and was like, "whats going on". Maybe you wasn't there long enough to see the Entertainment.
bandito 08-10-2008, 07:31 PM i love olive garden!!! their breadsticks are so delicious. but i'm italian so what do you expect!I agree Olive Garden rules!

That sounds more familiar...but I still don't recall any in the area.

Well, I was there long enough to enjoy my meal! Maybe they did do it and I just blocked it out! hahaha!
Other places that have wait staff/entertainers--Lone Star Steakhouse (never been, but closed down now) and Texas Roadhouse (they supposedly line dance once an hour).
unclejohnnybob 08-11-2008, 06:58 PM hi, we have 2 major highways near here, near Reading, no Long John Silvers or Sonic anywhere on the major. the closest ljs is about 15 miles away. and what the heck is an In and Out? never heard of it

In-N-Out is a burger franchise mainly out west (Cal.-Arz.) I believe.
We have a LJS's here in Nashville, but i'm not a real big fan of theirs. I prefer Captain D's seafood. Sonic's Drive In is kinda like McDonalds, we have one on every street corner it seems like.
Brian Damage 08-12-2008, 03:37 PM Sonic's and Jack in the Box....oh yeah Papa John's too.
Janice 08-12-2008, 04:16 PM Maybe a dumb question, but how far has Boston Market branched out?
Nighthawk76 08-12-2008, 04:21 PM Maybe a dumb question, but how far has Boston Market branched out?
We have Boston Market in Illinois even though I've never been into one.
BarneyFife 08-12-2008, 04:21 PM Maybe a dumb question, but how far has Boston Market branched out?
Janice, we had a few here in Nashville back in the mid to late 90's, but they all closed down.
dawsongirl 08-12-2008, 04:30 PM Maybe a dumb question, but how far has Boston Market branched out?
We had one here, but it went out years ago. :( Shame; their frozen meals are yum.
I think Kansas City may still have some.
dawsongirl 08-12-2008, 04:31 PM Thought of another place...I don't know how much of a "chain" this is, but Backyard Burgers. I only know them to be in KC, but they're really good.
dawsongirl 08-12-2008, 04:33 PM Here's where they are. They go out west, but avoid the NW altogether.

We have several Backyard Burgers in this area. They're awesome!

Well, i never knew that, but the way the franchise is growing, don't be surprised if they build one in your area soon. *crossing my fingers for you*
TheHappyBurgerMeister 08-12-2008, 06:43 PM Sonic (and it doesn't help that they advertise it on TV and the closest one is probably 200 miles away!), In and Out Burger, Whataburger, Kroger... I know there's more, but just can't remember or never heard of the places because they're not in my area!
TheHappyBurgerMeister 08-12-2008, 06:47 PM We have several Boston Markets in my area, but in the last few years I've seen several go out of business. Also we used to have a ton of Hardee's like 15-20 years ago, then those all went out of business here in my area, but there's still quite a few Hardee's up in Northern WI that are still open.
dawsongirl 08-12-2008, 08:48 PM Well, i never knew that, but the way the franchise is growing, don't be surprised if they build one in your area soon. *crossing my fingers for you*
I hope so! We have a little fast food burger place here that is awesome as well, but we have enough places that suck (coughCULVERScough) that we could stand a BYB.
dawsongirl 08-12-2008, 08:49 PM I can cross Ruby Tuesday off my list! I noticed today that one was just built here. Yay! Now I just wish the Fuddruckers was not on the opposite end of town.
Janice 08-12-2008, 08:53 PM Here's where they are. They go out west, but avoid the NW altogether.

Thanks, it seems they've been almost everywhere and closed just about everywhere, lol. Their frozen food was very good.
dawsongirl 08-12-2008, 09:02 PM Thanks, it seems they've been almost everywhere and closed just about everywhere, lol. Their frozen food was very good.
I wish I knew why ours closed. It's not like we have anything else like it around. Business baffles me.
KissMyGrits 08-12-2008, 09:14 PM We don't have any Boston Markets around us. Sighs. I used to eat there once a week when I lived in Florida.
There are two places I'm eating at in October when we go home for a visit. Boston Market and my favorite Cuban restaurant.
Counting down the days until we go back home for a visit...
catlover79 08-12-2008, 11:30 PM Maybe a dumb question, but how far has Boston Market branched out?
There's a Boston Market near where I work, but I haven't eaten there in years.
James 08-13-2008, 03:00 AM I just saw that the HQ is in Nashville and Tennessee has 37 of them. Not fair!
I had always thought their headquarters was in Memphis (the chain started in northern Mississippi IIRC), but when I went to its website it says "Nashville, TN 37219". What happened?
Ohio has a Back Yard Burgers (which is another one I don't have), but you have to go all the way to Toledo for it. The one in Mitchell, Indiana (south of Bloomington), may be closer for all I know.
James 09-03-2008, 01:56 AM Anyone know if the Roy Rogers Roastbeef restaurants still exist? I don't know if they were in California, but I liked them, too.
Yes, Roy Rogers restaurants are still around, albeit only in the eastern United States. Draw a triangle from Massachusetts to Virginia to Ohio, and Roy Rogers' marketing area is just that. About half of their locations are in Maryland (and I plan on taking a trip there next year, YEE-HAW!!!). The Ohio location is to the east of Cincinnati, inside/west of I-275 Exit 63A (OH 32)--if you see Beechmont Mall you've gone the wrong way. See http://www.royrogersrestaurants.com for more information.
phoebe7165 09-03-2008, 04:03 PM Bubba Gump's is a chain?! i went to one in Times Square in NYC and thought that was the only one o_O LOL
There's also a Bubba Gump's in Daytona Beach and at Citywalk in Orlando.
Whenever I'm in SoCal, I like going to a eating establishment called Farmer Boy's.
When I'm in the Ohio/Indiana area, I like to shop at a store called Meijer's. Kinda like Wal-mart but I think they have a better selection of things.
I wish we had both those in FL.
veggie-tari-jenn 09-04-2008, 12:12 AM Sonic (and it doesn't help that they advertise it on TV and the closest one is probably 200 miles away!), In and Out Burger, Whataburger, Kroger... I know there's more, but just can't remember or never heard of the places because they're not in my area!
Thats what I was gonna say Sonic...My Fiancee always sees the commercials for burgers and junk and complains we dont have one near us.. I could care less as a Veggie... the burgers do nothing for me...hehe.

Oh man I love Meijer's! The one neraest to my house is in Maumee, which is where I lived before September 10, 1994.
MusicJunkie 09-28-2008, 05:25 AM no Jack In The Box in Louisville KY. With stores, there are no Costcos (but we do have Sams) or Newbury Comics' either.
MusicJunkie 09-28-2008, 05:27 AM We used to have a Boston Market about five minutes away back in the mid/late 90's and I loved their food. But then it closed around 99 or 2000 and was replaced by a Schlotsky's Deli. But I love Schlotsky's sandwiches as well
