Golden Girls spans generations, and people of all ages love the show, so I wanted to get your stories on why/how you got hooked on GG! :)

I didn't watch Golden Girls when it was on (actually I was born in 1985, the year the show started!), but when I was in high school I got a terrible case of mono and had to stay home from school for about three weeks. GG was on Lifetime like 12 times a day, and my mom said it was one of her favorite TV shows in the 80s, so I started watching it, and loved it of course!!

Since it chronicles the first seven years of my life, I love to watch the show and see what the issues where when I was born. Now I have all seven seasons on DVD and watch them every day now that I'm 22 and work from home. :)

Any other stories out there?

I have some vague memories of watching GG in the original run at my grandmother's house. I liked it, but I didn't get half the jokes, hehe. When I was a bit older, I used watch it on and off on one of our local stations. But my obsession didn't really take off until I was in high school and the Lifetime reruns started. Same type of thing with me. I watched The Golden Girls everyday with my mom and brother when I was little, and didn't get most of the jokes (I laughed anyway lol), but when I got older, I started watching the reruns on Lifetime and fell in love with the show!!!! The rest is history!!! :D

I started watching them on NBC when I was little. I was born in 1981 which I would of been almost 4 yrs. old in 1985 which I was only 3 until December 11.
I watched them on Lifetime as reruns at home when I was in high school in 1997. Now, I have all of the GG DVDs which I enjoy watching them now. I have all 7 seasons of GG, and also GG Intimate Portrait on DVD too.

Mine is similar to Kristen's.

I spent many nights over at my grandparents house as a kid. It was of course their favorite show and I used to enjoy watching the looks on their faces as they laughed. As I got older through the years I started watching again on Lifetime. I would remember seeing the episodes, but for the first time I could understand the humor.
Truth is, all of the "show being the best" and "awesome" aside.... Golden Girls is my "comfort food". It takes me back to a time when the world wasn't so bad or serious of a place. My loving Grandparents were still alive and happy, and seen though eyes of a 10 year old boy, would live forever. Laying on that old "davenport" watching the soft glow of the TV in the dark, enjoying cheese and crackers with Grandma and Grandpa. Never a care in the world. I spent more time looking at them and their smiling faces then the TV screen. It was much better.

When Estelle recently passed, it brought out a lot of weird feelings for me, things I totally never expected. Old memories totally unrelated to her. I was greatly saddened by her loss, but it also made me think of those nights 20 plus years ago. After a few moments of sadness, it turns into a misty smile.

So to answer why I got hooked? The laughter of an old couple gone nearly a decade in front of a small glowy box.

I got hooked because I was always home on Saturday night. It is simply the best situation comedy ever produced.

I had over 120 episodes on tape by 1992. We wore them out.

Well I wasn't born until january of 1992 and the show was over by then. When I was young I could remember occasionally watching the show with my aunt on lifetime, but I was still too young to understand. ( I didnt even know the name of show at that time lol) Then I saw it on lifetime one day and found out the name and I fell in love. I have every season on dvd now!!! I think the reason the show is so addicting and loveable is that the writing was simply amazing! The characters were so delightfully different that they blended together in an unimaginable way. And I think that the actresses were the best possible choices to bring that writing and those characters to life. All of those things combined made the show a classic that no one will ever be able to forget.

Well here is my story...
It was 1987 and I was 16. I had just found out that my brother that was 10 years older than me was gay and had contracted AIDS. The rest of my family had known for some time but being I was the youngest I was spared for as long as possible. Now looking back, the 80's were a tough time for HIV and AIDS. While I was in high school, I had to keep this to myself beacuse there were so many rejection stories and my parents didn't want me to have to deal with that too. Well I was watching TV with my brother in his room and Golden Girls was on. There was an episode that Blanche spoke of gay men's good taste in jewelry and I remember my brother laughing. My brother had excellent taste in classy men's jewelry. My brother passed in 1989. I would watch the show when I could catch it on tv and I found that I was always laughing. Now I am a 37 year old stay at home mom and have watched GG for years on lifetime. I record the shows and watch them when I get a chance or if I need a pick me up. My kids think Sophia is the funniest so I hope to pass this bug on to them.

For the longest time my parents didn't allow us to have rooms in our rooms, so the only TV we had was in the living room.

During the evening my older sisters (10 years older) would hog the TV and "Golden Girls" happened to be the one show both of them enjoyed. No matter how much I complained and begged them to let me change the channel they wouldn't give in.

After a few viewings I realized that the show wasn't too bad... it was quite funny actually.

My sister got me on the show too kinda. She's 16 years older than me, and she has always forced me to watch the show with her. I didn't get any of it until about a year ago, and then I found out that it was "quite comical" as my sister had been saying. Now I watch it all the time.

I was born in 1974 and I was 11 when the show started. I don't really remember watching the original run. As I have gotten older I love it. I watch it on the WE channel every nite. And hope to get the DVDs. I loved Sophia wise cracks.And I loved how the girls would hit Rose on the head with a newspaper or magizine!! Verry funny comedy!

I don't even remember the first time I watched them. Growing up with a single parent I spent pretty much all my time with my grandparents. My grandma got me hooked right after I was born, and I'm still as huge of a fan now as I was 19 years ago! I even got some of my friends hooked!

I was an original watcher because I loved Bea Arthur. I loved her on Maude so I followed her on this show and I found it a funny show.

I got hooked because I have to watch tv before bed and it would be on the lifetime channel and of course my tv has to stay on all night but that's a story for my shrink :lol:

So I'd watch the Golden Girls. I don't remember watching them during the original run but I rarely watch any show in it's original run.

Since then I became a HUGE fan of Bea Arthur and am simply hooked. That's my story.

I would watch it with my Dad every saturday night. I loved Dorothy and her wit. She reminded me of my great aunt, who had recently passed. I'm still a Dorothyfangirl to this day.

My grandma and my mom watched it when i was little i was readin on facebook my mothers post about rues death and she had put a link to the golden girls greatest moments on youtube and i had notin to do so i watched it and about laughed my head off so it was on hallmark later that nite so i watched it i was instantly hooked since my mother wasnt around after leaving in august of 2003 it was like having 4 fictional mothers if i was down id watch golden girls and come out of my room laughing my butt off

I always liked to hang out with older people. I'm 19. My mom sugested I watch golden Girls. I started about a year ago & became hooked!

i vaguely remember watching the golden girls and later golden palace at my grandmas house as a kid when i visited,i also remember bea arthur doing ads for shoppers drug mart (drug store chain in canada) of course i didnt know who she was at the time. i really got into golden girls about a year or so ago, in florida ironically. my family vacations down there at christmas time, i couldnt sleep and was watching tv and came across lifetime i think and they had back to back episodes and i got hooked! i have since got hooked to maude as well (i wish i could buy more dvds! thank godness for youtube)
