I remember George Lopez saying once that he was raised by his grandmother, but having just started watching the show this past spring and being a new George Lopez fan, I don't know much about him or his background.
Did the idea or premise of this show come from how George really grew up with this grandmother, or is it purely fictional? Just wondering... I know that some sitcoms are based on the stars' family life, professional life, childhood, etc.
How awful would it be if there was really a mother like Benny Lopez out there!!!   ;)

My mom was similar to Benny when it came to emotional support-lol She had no parenting skills when I had a problem , only when everything was fine.

I watched an interview recently, and George Lopez said that his father left when he was a baby, and that his mother had a childlike mentality. She was uneducated, and was very slow. I have an aunt like that, who raised four kids alone, yet is probably semi-********, and I mean that in the medical sense. I could tell that George loved his mother; however, she was nothing at all like Benny.

The best part about Benny and George's relationship is that you know that they care about each other deep down, but it's not cheesy like other sitcoms lean toward with dysfunctional relationships. I find it really refreshing (not sure if that's the right word.) But it's different, and that's one of the reasons why I like GL so much. It's dysfunctional, and not afraid to be.
