I just saw this interview with Beatrice Arthur on YouTube. If you click on the link further down and move it on to watch between roughly 13 minutes - 25 minutes, she talks about her Maude co-stars.
She describes Bill Macy as a loose cannon, but does admire him as an actor. She clearly liked and admired the acting of Rue McClanahan, Conrad Bain and Hermoine Baddeley. She didn't seem quite as complimentary when talking about Adrienne Barbeau.
However Esther Rolle gets the sharp end of the stick I feel. Bea describes a "wonderful" thing someone said about Esther - "My name is Esther Rolle. I don't do windows and I don't do comedy". I thought that was a bit harsh. Norman Lear would not have given Esther "Good Times" (as Bea said he did), if he didn't respect her skills. What do Maude fans think? :)
