The Green Bay Packers, driven to the brink of desperation in their ongoing spat with Brett Favre, have discussed internally the possibility of trading the quarterback within the NFC North Division.



A source close to the situation told the Journal Sentinel on Wednesday that the Packers were considering seeking a deal with one of their division rivals, most probably the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears, if backed into a corner by the National Football League and public sentiment.

On Monday, general manager Ted Thompson said flatly that the Packers would not trade Favre within the division.

But having no prospects of trading Favre anywhere else and under increasing pressure from Commissioner Roger Goodell, the Packers are considering doing almost the unthinkable: not only trading Favre, but also to the Vikings, a team that will be their opponent Sept. 8 on opening night at Lambeau Field.

An NFL source said he understood from the Packers that trading within the NFC North would be a last resort. They still hope to persuade Favre to be amenable to what the team regards as realistic trade possibilities with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets.

Although it has appeared to be quiet on the trading front in the last week, a deal with either team is far from dead. The Packers have had ongoing talks with both teams as recently as this week.

However, Favre has frustrated the Packers by refusing to speak with officials from the Buccaneers or Jets. That makes it almost impossible for the deal to materialize.

The Packers remain adamant about not releasing Favre. With Goodell expected to act on Favre’s request for reinstatement as soon as today, the Packers clearly don’t want him in Green Bay and are running out of options.

On Wednesday, Packers President Mark Murphy met with James “Bus” Cook, Favre’s agent, at Cook’s law office in Hattiesburg, Miss., for about eight hours. The source said a central reason why Murphy went to Hattiesburg in the first place was that Goodell put heavy pressure on him to make the trip.

WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) in Milwaukee reported that during the meeting, Murphy presented Favre and Cook with an offer in which the Packers would compensate Favre in the area of $20 million over the next 10 years in order to remain retired.

According to a source familiar with both sides, this was not the first time that the two sides had discussed a financial arrangement that would tie Favre to the organization for years to come. It is thought that the discussions began as early as a few months ago.

It remains unclear whether the offer was made shortly after Favre retired or when he began expressing a desire to play football again.

If the offer was made, in some people’s opinion it might reflect poorly on the organization and general manager Ted Thompson, who is in charge of football decisions. Some might interpret it as the Packers trying to buy off their Hall of Fame player.

Favre in meeting

Favre, who worked out Wednesday morning at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, participated in the meeting with Murphy for several hours before leaving without comment.

When Murphy left several hours later, he had a frustrated expression on his face and also declined to comment.

In a statement issued Wednesday night, Murphy says: “We discussed a number of topics not related to football, including Brett’s long-term relationship with the Packers. I consider our conversation to be confidential, and am going to be respectful of Brett and his family and keep the details private.

“Ted and Mike (McCarthy) and I are going to continue to work on the football side of this issue. They have my full support.”

Later, Cook emerged and was asked about Murphy.

“I don’t know about all that,” Cook said. “When you’re doing negotiations there’s ups and downs. I can’t speak for Mark’s feelings.”

Cook went on to say that if Favre was reinstated today, it was a “very good possibility” that he would report Friday. The Packers don’t practice today, work twice Friday and once Saturday before holding their intra-squad scrimmage Sunday night at Lambeau Field.

“There’s nothing that says he has to be there at a certain time,” Cook said. “Except for the fact that once he’s reinstated the Packers are practicing.

“Will they cut him? Will they trade him? I don’t know.”

Cook said he and Favre hadn’t talked to any teams that might have expressed interest in a trade.

“He’d love to go back to Green Bay,” Cook said. “That’s why he started working out. But right now it looks like he’ll be the quarterback at Oak Grove High School.”

The New York Jets wanted to talk to Favre, but their efforts were rebuffed by Favre, the source said. The Jets appear to have little hopes of luring Favre.

The Vikings plan to start Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback, with Gus Frerotte and Brooks Bollinger in relief. The Bears have Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman competing for the job.

Greg Aiello, a spokesman for the NFL, said Goodell took no action on Favre’s request for reinstatement Wednesday.

“He wants to give both the Packers and Brett an appropriate amount of time to make decisions, including decisions impacting the team’s roster and salary cap,” Aiello said.

I wouldn't have thought that was possible even a week ago but The Packers put themselves in a corner. When they said Favre will only be allowed to hold a clipboard and not even compete for the QB job. If you thought the media circus over Romo and Jessica was something , it will be nothing compared to this if Favre shows up. It's already divided their fans and I'm sure it will divide their team. Favre can veto any team he doesn't want to play for so the Packers have put themselves in a tight spot now. Remember Philly got rid of T.O. just to get rid of him and he ended up in Dallas. GB might have to do the same thing if Favre refuses to go any place but Minnesota. Green Bay can't move forward until Favre is gone.

In fact, there’s actually a headline right now on the Press-Gazette web site reading, “All But Over: Favre to Go to Jets (It’s Over: Favre traded to Jets)” although there’s no story under that headline, and it has the appearance of something that was mistakenly put up by an overzealous web producer. Favre heads to Green Bay as NFL announces reinstatement

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Favre will be reinstated and added to the Green Bay Packers' active roster Monday.

The NFL announced the move Sunday. Commissioner Roger Goodell had held off on granting Favre's request for reinstatement for nearly a week.

He hoped Favre and the team could resolve their standoff. By reinstating Favre, Goodell is following through on a recent promise to force action.

The league office was closed for business Sunday. The reinstatement will become effective Monday at noon.

Favre first informed ESPN's Ed Werder of his pending reinstatement Sunday morning in Hattiesburg, Miss.


Favre was prepared Sunday to fly to Green Bay, he said.


ESPN's Wendi Nix reported Favre's plane was scheduled to touch down at 6:30 ET, though he didn't plan to attend the sold-out Packers Family Night at Lambeau Field, which more than 60,000 fans were expected to attend.

Packers officials planned to greet Favre upon his arrival to Green Bay.


Favre was expected to report to training camp Monday by 1 p.m. ET, when the Packers say they will be prepared to make a roster move.

It could be to add him, trade him or usher him back into retirement if they complete negotiations on a deal.

Their potential marketing agreement, worth a reported $25 million over 10 years, could end Favre's bid to return just months after retiring.

There had been indications Favre was wavering on the offer. A source close to the negotiations told Werder on Saturday that Favre has developed misgivings about the proposed deal because it fails to accomplish his primary objective in deciding to unretire -- namely, it would not put him back on the football field.


Also on Saturday, Goodell said he hoped the situation would be resolved by Monday, by which team and league sources told ESPN's Wendi Nix that he was expected to act on the reinstatement.

Goodell visited the Cincinnati Bengals' training camp on Saturday before heading north to Canton, Ohio, for the weekend's Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.



"I'm not trying to interject myself," Goodell said in Georgetown, Ky., according to The Associated Press. "I was interjected into it because there was a tampering charge initially. I'm not looking for things to interject myself to. It's an issue that needs to be addressed because of the competing interests. You want to make sure it's done properly and within our rules. This is an issue that ultimately has to be decided between Brett and the Packers."

The Packers hold Favre's rights until his current contract expires after the 2010 season. Tensions have built between Favre and the team over the past several weeks.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy again praised his players for not allowing the Favre situation to distract them.

"What's going on between Brett and the organization is something that the players and coaches, we cannot handle," McCarthy said Saturday. "We're not involved in it. I think they did a good job from a responsibility standpoint dealing with it for about two days, but the focus has been on improving."

Earlier this week, Favre sent a letter to Goodell requesting to be reinstated from the team's reserve/retired list. But Goodell has held off approving the request, hoping the two sides could resolve their differences.

"Primarily, it starts with the fact, does Brett want to play football?" Goodell said. "The second is, do the Packers want him to play for the Packers. Those are the two principal points that have to be resolved. And only two parties can make that determination, not me."

Goodell said both parties are being "reasonable."

"They're difficult, emotional issues," Goodell said. "They're important to the future of both of them."

Green Bay -- The Green Bay Packers are through negotiating with quarterback Brett Favre on a marketing deal and they are anticipating him reporting for training camp Monday and being on the field as soon as he passes his physical, a Packers source said.

Another source close to the club, said that the Packers have agreed to allow Favre to compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job and he won't necessarily be the backup this season. Trade talks with Favre have not advanced and coach Mike McCarthy is expected to come up with a plan that will split the practice repetitions with Rodgers.

The Packers released this statement from president Mark Murphy:

"Sixteen years after Brett Favre came to the Packers, he is returning for a seventeenth season. He has had a great career with our organization and although we built this year around the assumption that Brett meant what he said about retiring, Brett is coming back. We will welcome him back and turn this situation to our advantage.

"Frankly, Brett's change of mind put us in a very difficult spot. We now will revise many actions and assumptions about our long-term future, all predicated on Brett's decision last March to retire. As a result of his decision, we invested considerably in a new and different future without Brett and we were obviously moving in that direction. That's why this wasn't easy. Having crossed the Rubicon once when Brett decided to retire, it's very difficult to reorient our plans and cross it again in the opposite direction - but we'll put this to our advantage.

"Brett will be in camp tomorrow. Although there has been uncertainty regarding Brett's return, Ted Thompson and Coach McCarthy had previously discussed this and have had a plan in place. Coach McCarthy will talk to the team and the quarterbacks about the plan moving forward, and after he has done that we will share it publicly.

"No matter what, I look forward to another successful season for the Packers and our fans. This has been a tough situation, but the Packers will make the most of it."

McCarthy is expected to address the quaerterback situation after the scrimmage tonight.

Roger Goodell isn't forcing anybody to do anything, he is just allowing Brett Favre back into the NFL.

I've been reading the Packers' board and most fans ( even the ones who were against Favre) like this solution the best. Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre went into a meeting Tuesday morning acknowledging that he was at a "stalemate" with the team and believed the "best thing for this team is for us to part ways."

Consequently, Favre is unlikely to take the field for practice Tuesday afternoon, pending his second meeting with coach Mike McCarthy.

"We're at a stalemate," Favre said. "Mike and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction. We all know the reason I'm here is because the commissioner [Roger Goodell] reinstated me so we have a lot of things to figure out. It's simple and complicated, both at the same time."

Favre said the team once again rejected his request to talk to teams about a trade within the NFC North, preferably to the Minnesota Vikings or possibly the Chicago Bears.

Favre clarified reports that he and the Packers have backpedaled on the premise that there would be an open competition with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job.

"Mike told me, hey, we're a better team with you on it but wanted to know if I have a problem with an open competition," Favre said. "I don't have a problem with competing -- you know that, but Aaron should be the starter right now because he's been out here all this time. Favre announced his retirement on March 6, and the Packers moved ahead with Rodgers, Favre's former understudy, as the team's new starting quarterback. But Favre, still under contract with the Packers, then followed through on hints that he was interested in a return to the NFL.



The Packers have attempted to work out a trade outside the NFC North, with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers reported as likely suitors, but to no avail. And last week, team president Mark Murphy flew to Mississippi to discuss a marketing deal for Favre worth a reported $25 million. Favre has not accepted that deal, either.

Asked what stories have been "planted," Favre alluded to the reports that said he waffled on un-retiring in late March or early April. He said that's "just not the way it went down, at all."

He also expressed anger with the stories that alleged he had a team-issued cell phone that showed the Vikings were tampering with him.

"Again, that was bull on both parts," he said.

"Then," Favre said, "they tried to buy me off to stay retired."

He added, "So they can say they welcome me back but, come on, the way they've treated me tells you the truth. They don't want me back, so let's move on. I don't know where it's headed. We'll see."

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre went into a meeting Tuesday morning acknowledging that he was at a "stalemate" with the team and believed the "best thing for this team is for us to part ways."

Consequently, Favre is unlikely to take the field for practice Tuesday afternoon, pending his second meeting with coach Mike McCarthy.

"We're at a stalemate," Favre said. "Mike and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction. We all know the reason I'm here is because the commissioner [Roger Goodell] reinstated me so we have a lot of things to figure out. It's simple and complicated, both at the same time."

Favre said the team once again rejected his request to talk to teams about a trade within the NFC North, preferably to the Minnesota Vikings or possibly the Chicago Bears.

Favre clarified reports that he and the Packers have backpedaled on the premise that there would be an open competition with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job.

"Mike told me, hey, we're a better team with you on it but wanted to know if I have a problem with an open competition," Favre said. "I don't have a problem with competing -- you know that, but Aaron should be the starter right now because he's been out here all this time. I respect Brett Favre as a great player, but what he is doing right now to the Packers, rivals that of T.O. and what he did to the Eagles.

No way is he going to Minnesota, as interesting as that would be of a scenario...Favre will start, and Rogers will ride the bench once AGAIN..f Mike McCarthy saying this is an open competition at the quarterback position, when everybody knows it's not..one of the people on 1st and 10 on ESPN put it very well saying, did Michael Jordan have to "fight" for a spot on the team, when he returned to play basketball the 2nd time? Nope.

Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton likes the fact that the team's camp has been virtually free of controversy. And then he couldn't help himself.

"Green Bay, that's a soap opera,'' he said, referring to the ongoing Brett Favre saga. "It's shaking Aaron Rodgers, I don't care what they're saying.''

Then Crayton went on to urge the Packers to start Rodgers, not Favre, against Dallas on Sept. 21. When he was reminded that Rodgers played fairly well against the Cowboys when Favre was injured, Crayton said, "Did anyone have any film on him?

"Their defense had film on him for last week's scrimmage. How'd that go?''

Rodgers was 7-for-20 and booed by Packers fans in last week's Family Night scrimmage.

Now there's lots of talk on ESPN Radio of Brett going to Tampa Bay! The Packers visit the Buccaneers September 28--wouldn't it be interesting for Brett to face his old team!

I'm glad he's not going to the Vikings--if that were to happen he'd be as popular in Green Bay as Art Modell in Cleveland! :lol:
