Everybody Loves Raymond- I'll admit I liked it the first couple if seasons, but I never thought it was that funny or special. They recycled the same jokes and plots over and over again. None of the characters were very likeable. Frankly, I'm tired of the whole stupid husband/father character. Homer Simpson is funny to me, but not Ray Barone or any of his clones.
Seinfeld- It is a funny show, but I find the characters to be totally unlikeable. It's not a show I enjoy watching too much.
Friends- Way too trashy for my tastes. None of the characters were anyone I'd want in my circle of friends. Loved Chandler though.

Underrated
Wings- I never understood why this show wasn't a lot more popular. It's one of my all-time favorites and I can watch it over and over again, unlike the three shows I mentioned above. I think too many people compared it to Cheers, which is a shame. Both are great shows in their own way.
NewsRadio- Another fine show that got absolutely zero attention from NBC. I'm surprised it even lasted for five seasons.
Scrubs- IMHO, it's the Wings of the 00's. Hilarious, well-written, good acting, interesting characters, and NBC has always treated this show like dog poop.

Two and a Half Men aka nothing but sleaze, it's sad this is TV's highest rated comedy
Scrubs it's airing everywhere, what a lousy show
30 Rock every critic's darling, the critics don't know what they're talking about, this show sucks

Underrated
Corner Gas the best show US residents don't know about
Hope & Faith it needed more seasons

Overrated....this could go on for pages.
- Friends. IT WAS NOT THAT FUNNY. Worth a chuckle or two, but everyone acted like this was the greatest thing that had ever been on TV. Besides, half the actors on that show can't really be called actors or comedy actors.

- Will and Grace. Never thought this was all that funny either. Ok, so it supposedly pushed limits or did something rarely done...big deal.

- Honeymooners. I never found Ralph funny at all and I think Alice should have beaten the hell out of him. I don't get what's so funny about a loudmouth who yells at his wife all the time.

My picks are not all sitcoms as I tend to like dramas more and its rare for me to find a sitcom i find truly funny, but here are mine for what its worth

OVERRATED:
1. FRIENDS - the premise was so cliche and the characters were unlikeable and unfunny
2. SEINFIELD - characters were unlikeable to me
3. ALMOST EVERY OTHER SHOW ON - too many shows depend on sleeze
UNDERRATED:
1. NURSES - an underdog that survivied for 3 seasons until nbc screwed with it. i find it funnier than its sister show the golden girls which is also a favorite of mine. the writing was witty, the characters had distinct personalities. i liken it to night court in a hospital. could have been a classic
2. THE COMMISH - guess a cop show has to have excess violence and sex to make it.
3. NIGHT COURT - a taste of dark comedy mixed with screwball humor
4. RESTLESS GUN - this was in the top ten during its run yet only lasted 2 seasons?!?

Not restricting the discussion to only sitcoms:

Underrated (in my opinion):
Tales of the Gold Monkey
Sledge Hammer!
The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
The Magnificent Seven
Tru Calling

I thought all the above shows were better than average and should have had
a longer run.

Overrated:
Reality shows in general (with the exceptions of Who Wants to Be a
Superhero? and America's Greatest Dogs, the only two that I have
bothered to watch)
Raunchy sitcoms like Family Guy and Two and a Half Men that have to resort to vulgar
language for cheap laughs way too often

*Friends - this has got to be the most overrated, sleezy show every to hit television. I find nothing about this show funny or likeable. The writing is horrendous, the acting is very unprofessional, and from what I've seen, there's nothing funny about it.

*Seinfeld - this is actually not a bad show. I've grown to like it over the years, and it definitely has its funny moments. I still believe, though, that it is completely overrated compared to other shows of its kind.

*30 Rock - it was either this, The Office, or Two and a Half Men, but I went with this one. It gets minimal ratings. Has it even had an episode turn out over 6 million viewers? Yet, NBC keeps renewing it, and the critics seem to love it more and more every year. I just don't get it.

Underrated:
*Home Improvement - this show is usually passed up when comparing it to other 90's shows like Friends and Seinfeld. It never got the critical praise it deserves, but it got GREAT ratings its entire run. It never fell below the top 10 and was at one point ABC's highest rated sitcom, which is a lot to say for that alone.

*A Different World - to most people, this is just a Cosby-spinoff. This is a great show that isn't just a Cosby spinoff. It made a name for itself on television - it ranked just below The Cosby Show in the ratings for 2 years, and was just ahead of The Cosby Show for 2 years. It got huge ratings during its prime, and is often overlooked.

*Drew Carey Show - for one thing, it ra nfor 9 seasons but never got the attention it deserves. Drew Carey is a great man, and the show is always LOL-hilarious. I don't know why someone would hate this show, honestly. It never got any kind of critical praise whatsoever.

Others you can add to the list are The Nanny, Mad About You, Family Matters, Boy Meets World, Growing Pains, Who's the Boss?, One Day at a Time, Whose Line is it Anyway?, and 227, among others. So many great shows are overlooked just because of other shows that dominated them at the time.

I remember Nurses! That was a good show, up until the third and final season. It's a shame that show never had much of a chance. I think it would have been better if NBC aired it on a weeknight with the other workplace sitcoms.

I also think Becker was an underrated sitcom. I found it funny, up until they replaced Reggie with Piss, I mean, Chris. Futurama never got the attention it deserved either.

I agree with The Office, 30 Rock, 2.5 Men, and Married With Children being overrated. None of them are funny to me. I also can't stand all those crime shows. I just don't understand what people find entertaining about murder. Just my opinion :D

Underrated...
Drew Carey-I liked this show a lot at first, and then I stopped watching but then after a while, I noticed it wasn't on anymore. Never really knew when (or if) it had been canceled. Anyone know what year it was canceled?

Square Pegs- it was never given a chance, and I think that it could have had a successful run. True, it would have become old fast, since it took place in high school, but it would have been nice to see the characters graduate!

Now some thoughts...
I LOVE Seinfeld, but I do agree that a lot of hype surrounded it when it ended. However, I think it's an acquired taste; like Monk.

I've seen episodes of Friends and Two and a Half Men. I never really watched either in prime-time. I find "Friends" a little funnier than "Men", but I can't really get into either one. "Men" did have some funny moments, though.

*Overrated* -

Will & Grace - I could never understand why it lasted so long. It never appealed to me.

Two and a Half Men - I could never bring myself to watch an entire episode.

Friends - I liked it at first, but then it just got to be too much.

*Underrated* -

Barney Miller - Some of references, hairstyles and especially the clothes are dated, but the dynamic of the cast and the razor sharp writing are timeless.

Benson - It seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle of sister shows Soap and The Golden Girls. However, Benson lasted three seasons longer than the show it was spun off from (Soap) and lasted as long as The Golden Girls.

WKRP - Another great ensemble comedy...and I might be a bit biased since the show is set in my home state of Ohio. :D Its little references and jokes about the Buckeye State (and the Midwest in general) still work 30+ years later.

I think Monika meant that Loni married someone she knew as a teenager. I think if she had married a teenager, she'd probably be in jail. Well, unless he was 18 or 19 which is still pretty gross consisdering that Loni is probably well into her 60's.

I used to watch WKRP when it was on here in Chicago. When I was working at Target, it was always on when I got home from work. will and grace- it wasn't the fact that it had 'gay' themes- not that i had anything against it, rather the humour was just so OTT for my liking. i found it difficult also to relate to the characters

family guy- it always relies on piss takes and send ups of tv shows, celebs films etc. for humour instead of original and amusing gags like that of the simpsons. a bit like the scary movie series, which became less funnier and more nausiating as the show progresses

underrated:

back to you- a good little show treated terribly by fox

who's the boss?- it didn't get that much recognition when it was aired on tv back in the 80s. both tony danza and judith light were superb in their roles as tony and angela

Nurses

Sledge Hammer! - ABC screwed this funny show by placing it up against two of the most established TV shows of the '80s in its 2-season run against Dallas on CBS and especially the up-rising Cosby Show on NBC. Shame too that David Rasche was never really given a show that lasted more than 2 or 3 seasons, b/c he was darn good on Sledge Hammer! and Nurses.

Police Squad! - ABC canned it b/c they felt many viewers couldn't keep up w/ the running gags, which were very funny and worked a little better than what they did on those Naked Gun movies, which is also created by the same person that created Police Squad!

Uber-rated (both underrated and overrated)

Yeah, I remember the show being on Friday nights for most of its run. I believe it was part of the new "revived" TGIF block ABC had. It seems like every show that was on that block got the shaft eventually. Hope and Faith was a great show, but ABC at that time never gave their sitcoms a decent chance.

It's Garry Shandling's Show(I prefer this to Larry Sanders)

How are some of you placing Family Guy in overrated? It does well in the demo, and the DVD sales are phenomenal! What a great show IMO.

Overrated
The Office (Seriously, this is comedy?)
30 Rock (Critics love it, viewers dont.)
Frasier (Boringgg.)
Back to You (It was good for like two episodes, after that it sucked. It was definitely not the best new show of that year.)

Underrated
King of Queens (Kevin James is hilarious, and the show was treated poorly.)
The Big Bang Theory (Come on, its geeks. That's pretty funny.)
Gary Unmarried (Critics hate it, but I think its funny. Plus the dad and son have good chemistry.)

I don't understand why some people dislike American Dad just b/c some think that it's another Family Guy clone.

Even though both FG and AD are created by Seth MacFarland, American Dad is a whole different show than Family Guy.

I think Monika meant that Loni married someone she knew as a teenager. I think if she had married a teenager, she'd probably be in jail. Well, unless he was 18 or 19 which is still pretty gross consisdering that Loni is probably well into her 60's.

"Friends" - I could never...

"Seinfeld" - ...understand the appeal...

"Cheers" - ...of these three shows!

UNDERRATED
"Stockard Channing Show"/ 'Just Friends' - Two different titles for the same show which starred Stockard Channing. I believe it ran on CBS c. 1979-80. Very funny show due to Channing's appeal.

"Princesses" - CBS comedy which starred Fran Drescher and Julie Haggerty. Very funny, but a very brief run.

"I'm A Big Girl Now" - Really cute family comedy which starred the under-rated Diana Canova as a single mom living with her dad, Danny Thomas. Ran on NBC c. 1980-81?

Basically by reading through this whole thread it comes down to this

Overrated
Shows that have been praised and liked by critics (Including seinfeld and cheers) and have massive amounts of fans, but you dont understand the appeal, so they just HAVE to be overrated. Wrong, just because you guys dont get these shows does not mean they are overrated at all; these shows have pushed the boundaries of sitcoms to their limitations. No matter how annoying you may think the charaters are, the writing of these shows should be respected. Just because they are amongst the most popular, does not mean they are overated, they are praised for a reason.

Most of the sitcoms listed in most of the underrated part are just **** sitcoms. Darma and Greg? Step by Step? Blossom? Wtf, these sitcoms arent underrated, they are just very dated and are very generic. That doesn't make them underrated.

Personally, most sitcoms recycle the same old crap. It took me a while to get the hype of shows like arrested development and Seinfeld, but those shows are just so much more deep than most sitcoms from the 70s - 80s and 90s that its really pathetic. You guys are too nostalgic for old sitcoms that are just not that good.

That being said....Frasier is a really underrated sitcom now, and was really overated when it was actually on (It won five straight emmys when the larry sanders show and sienfeld should of split with it.)

Friends isnt that good either....that is really overrated. It has massive amounts of fans but I think its because of the ensemble itself...and not the writing.

Friends isnt that good either....that is really overrated. It has massive amounts of fans but I think its because of the ensemble itself...and not the writing.

I actually agree with that. I've always thought it was the cast that made the show watchable, not the writing. If they hired different actors and used the same scripts, it would not have made it to season two.

Overrated:
1. Friends - Agreeing with what like2throw said.
2. Will & Grace - I've never found this show funny, but that's not why I put it here. Too many celebrity guest stars and such big hype over this show when I don't think it honestly deserved it is why I put it here.
3. 30 Rock - I own the DVDs, and I think it's amusing, but it's not this big classic it's made out to be.

Underrated:
1. NewsRadio - This is my favorite show, but that aside, this series had a wonderful, talented cast, sharp, witty scripts and is a show I'm proud to call my number one favorite. But it seems like people have never seen it, heard of it, or don't get it. And that's a shame.
2. Andy Richter Controls the Universe - Only 19 episodes, but this show is one of only two that I laugh at so hard I feel like I'm going to throw up. The critics loved it, but it never found an audience. Much like Arrested Development, which is now, I remember, why I resented AD in it's original run. Because FOX at least stuck with that show through 53 episodes, when they bailed on Richter after 19. I have come to like Arrested Development on DVD, but that's not the point.
3. Wings - Okay, people don't seem to see how great this show really is. They think it's just some silly stupid show. And it's not that at all. It has a wonderful cast, great scripts, and a nice run (172 episodes ain't bad at all). And yet people still think this was a stupid show. I'm just glad that I don't think that. Otherwise I'd miss out on one of the best sitcoms I've ever seen.

My personal opinions on over/under rated shows, not necessary sitcoms:

Over Rated:

Mad About You, too dull, and jumped the shark when Mable was born
Benson, too dull
My Two Dads, blah
Jeffersons, but the housekeeper rocked
BJ and the Bear, blah, wasn't Heather Locklear in this? That explains a lot of the popularity.
Family Ties, some good eppies, but then guest stars and weird story lines sent it over the edge
Silver Spoons, blah
Night Rider, not even the car was cool enough to make the show interesting
South Park, not even the "bigger", "longer", and "uncut" version could get this lady interested
Sex and the City, buncha obsessed hags
Family Guy
Most Reality Shows, Next Top Model, Fear Factor, Who Wants to Marry A Millionaire (Darva Conger fiasco comes to mind here)
Golden Girls, too much geriatric sex, not enough creative writing

Under Rated:

Dead Like Me (Darkly humorous, multi layered, well written, well acted, show, cancelled after two seasons to make room for pet project: Fat Actress)

Invader Zim (Cartoon, admittedly aimed at a small audience, cancelled after only 3 seasons, years later, fans are still buying their promotional products)

Miami Vice - I could never really understand this show too much. Basically it's just a cop show w/ loads of '80s music and fashion thrown in here and there.

Knight Rider - OK, I'll admit this show wasn't all that good, but it's sometimes guilty pleasure though.

Seinfield - Still can't into the show then, still can't get into now! What's the whole appeal behind this show?

Virtually almost every reality show that came in this decade

Underrated
Hunter (1984-91) - This show never gotten much recognition mainly b/c: 1). It was overshadowed by Miami Vice (which ironically nearly premiered the same day Hunter debuted) and 2). It lasted 2 seasons longer than Vice did and unlike Vice, Hunter saw more TV movies and even a brief revival Vice didn't see. It's just a shame that it's one of those shows that doesn't hold up well in syndication b/c of Vice.

Night Court

Sledge Hammer!

CPO Sharkey - OK, this might of not been that popular, but I thought it deserved a little longer run than it did, b/c it would've given Don Rickles more to showcase his comic talents and bring in more characters.

Miami Vice never could understand all the hype to me it was just an MTV version of cops and robbers

UNDERRATED:

BATMAN (1966-68) - Comic geeks dismiss it as a campy version fo the comic series, but it was also visually interesting to see each weeks' guest stars that played the famous villains and of course that theme song, too!

GREEN HORNET, THE (1966-67) - I liked this show a little better than Batman sometimes b/c 1). it was more of a darker version of Batman and 2). b/c of their gadgets that were ahead of its time and that it was good to see the battle between Green Hornet and his sidekick Kato against Batman and Robin. Shame it didn't last long, b/c of the fact that this show was under the shadow of Batman as Batman was getting the bigger ratings. The bright side is that at least this show was martial artist Bruce Lee's 1st American TV exposure. BTW, like Batman, this show too also had a great theme song.
