View Full Version : Behind The Scenes: TV Turmoil

When thinking of shows that did not get along behind the cameras, what shows come to mind?

ALF- I was reading that the show was very demanding and the actors had to work 20 hour days. On the series finale, Max Wright did his last scene and went to his dressing rooms to pack his things. Then he got into his car and left. He never said goodbye to anyone.

Night Court- On the TV Tales special, they said on the last day of work, they came in and were told to pack up and get out. What an AWFUL way to treat your cast after 9 years of hard work. Karen Austin said they fired her because she had Bell's Palsy (sp?) where her face was paralyzed. When this happened, they fired her and they kept it qiuet from public eye.

Out Of This World- Two of the guy actors did not get along on this show.

Three's Company- We all know about this. I think with this situation, time healed wounds, but it is unfortunate that Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers do not speak to each other to this day. Priscilla Barnes has stated that it was the worst 3 years of her life being on the show because of all the turmoil.

The Brady Bunch- The problems with Robert Reed. He did not appear in the last episode.

Something on a more personal level was when I worked at McDonald's. I will NEVER work at one again. The work environment was horrible. Everybody was very crotchety. The 3 people I trained with were 2 b+tches and 1 jack+ss. So in some way, I feel what it is like to be like these actors working in hostile environments.

Roseanne was notorious for having huge back-stage battles with producers and executives. Almost every season there were changes with the staff because of the fighting and arguments.

This is half the reason Roseanne was so groundbreaking because she refused to back down from male executives and pushed to tackle taboo topics with side-splitting, realistic humor.

I Love Lucy: Vivian Vance and Bill Frawley despised each other. He especially hated her. It started on the first day of rehearsal for shooting the pilot episode. Vivian saw Bill on the set, and said to Desi, "That's who's playing Fred Mertz, my husband? Christ, look at him, he looks old enough to be my father." Well, Bill heard Vivian say this and the anger was born. There were times that Vivian would get so ill driving thinking about the friction between Bill and she, that she would often have to pull over to the side of the road and throw up. I think the bitterness between them made a great chemistry on film, because when they traded insults it looked so real!

There is a story that Vivian did toast Bill in a bar, upon learning his death, so maybe they did eventually forgive each other. But filming with the two of them, the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

I always understood that toast to be more of a "He's finally dead!" kind of toast.

JackI've heard a couple stories about that Vivian/Bill "fued". I've heard what you said, but also that they were really good friends off-camera, and just hated working with each other.

I've heard that Carrol O'Conner and Norman Lear didn't always get along behind the scenes on "ALL IN THE FAMILY"

Rock Hudson and Susan St. James (why does she have "ST." in her name??? I've always wondered that) were constantly arguing behind the camera on "McMILLAN & WIFE", which was why she left the show.

Cybbil Sheperd and Bruce Willis also didn't get along behind the scenes on "MOONLIGHTING"

I've heard that Raymond Bailey sometimes didn't get along with some of his co-stars on "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES"

topher grace was always very distant from most of his castmates on that 70s show the exception being laura prepon .and also john belushi and jane curtin had quite a few problems at saturday night live but to jane;s credit she has often said in inerviews that she really liked john as a prefomer and also that deep down he was a good person and the fights they did have were way overblown by the media and that it was just very sad that he just couldnt overcome his problems

Alice - Linda Lavin was threatened by Polly Holliday's Flo being the breakout character that she drove Polly off the show into a spinoff that was lousy. I believe if her relationship with Linda Lavin was better she would had come back to Alice. Diane Ladd had problems with Linda as well and she lasted a half a season. She was a good replacement for Polly. When Jolene came on the show was no good after that.

Too Close for Comfort - I heard that Ted Knight and Nancy Dussault did not get along very well especially after she publicly aired her displeasure of the way the show wrote her. Ted was not happy with the way she aired her beef about the show to TV Guide and he thought she should be happy to be in a hit show. Nancy is an excellent actress but underutilized.

on "GOOD TIMES" Esther Rolle and John Amos got upset when J.J. became the "breakout character". The writers said they'd fix the problem after the first season, but they din't, then they promised to do it after the 2nd season, again they didn't, they gave them one more chance, but again they didn't, so John Amos left after the 3rd season, then Esther Rolle also left after the 4th season.

On "THE NEW DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" Carl Riener got mad when CBS refused to air an episode he wrote, so he left the show.

Those are really interesting! I never knew about William Frawley and Vivian Vance, or Penny Marshall/Shirley Williams either. Hmmm... I can't think of any others off-hand. The ones I had in mind (actually just one "Three's Company") have already been mentioned.

Come to think of it, I didn't know about Cybil Sheppard and Bruce Willis either.

Desinging Women comes to mind instantly: Delta Burke was very sick at the time of the shows success with manic depression and panic attacks and sudden weight gain and this caused a rift between her and Dixie Carter and her and series producer/writer/creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason which resulted in Delta leaving the series.

Cybill Shepherd and Christine Brananski on "Cybill" almost never got along and it is said that Cybill was extraordinarly jealous when Christine won an Emmy and she didn't.

I've heard that Brett Butler and the first kid that played her son Quinten did not get along because of her drinking and that's why the role of Quinten was recasted and aged. I also heard that she was VERY cruel to writers and producers and that the set of "Grace Under Fire" was a very tense place to work.

On Power Rangers, it is reported on Power Rangers Zeo, David Yost walked off the set because he was not receiving enough money. If you look at pictures at the ranger central website, some of them are actually scowling in the pictures. Austin St. John, Walter Jones, and Thuy Trang quit because of contract disputes. I am still saddened to this day that JoMarie Payton left Family Matters. When she left, it was NOT the same. The other Harriett didnt have a backbone to Carl like JoMarie Payton. The original Harriett didnt put up with Carl's shananagans. Shelly Long didnt get along with most of the cast on Cheers, which is why she departed after season 5. When I saw that comment about Vivian Vance toasting William Frawley's death, I was shocked. I didnt know they hated each other that much! Wow! The Night Court cast being treated like that on the last episode would make me steamed if I was working on that show. One other thing, did they get along on Step By Step? I have never heard Suzanne Somers mention in interviews about her years being on that show.

Rose Marie was jealous of Mary Tyler Moore on "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW". However, the two weren't constantly fighting, or anything like that. It's just that Rose was jealous because Laura became the breakout character, and originally, Sally was going to be the featured female, and Laura was just going to be in the background. But the episode "MY BLONDE HAIRED BRUNNETE" changed all that.

Yeah, she also wanted to write and/or direct an episode.

Personally I wish they would not have replaced her, just written her out in some way. The 2nd Harriette sucked(although she was only on the show for half of the last season), and it left a bad taste.

Wasn't part of the reason also the move from ABC to CBS and that she and some other cast members simply didn't want to continue with the show any longer because they felt it was time for the show to end?

It was the third season of Fresh Prince when Janet Hubert-Whitten got pregnant and all hell broke loose during that season. You can tell in Janet's performances that season that she was angry and not happy. Janet rocked during the first two seasons of the show and I loved her wardrobe and jewelry she wore. She was stylish and very attractive.

I also heard part of the issue was that Janet wanted a lot more money for doing the show and that she wanted to be credited as a producer and have more creative control which evidentally started a major war on the set resulting in them recasting with the below average actress Daphne Maxwell Reed.

What I don't understand is that of course Will was going to be the breakout star. The sitcom mainly centered around him. I would've figured it would've been expected. IMO, he was the star.

As for the season 3 performance, I don't think I ever noticed how angry she was, but now that you metion it, and I look back at some of the episodes, I can see it.

I remember hearing about that beef with Redd Foxx and the "S & S" producers about him walking off the show because they wouldn't give him a window in his dressing room, and at the time, I remember thinking that it was stupid. Don't forget Julie Cobb from the first season of Charles In Charge demanding a raise and was refused one, thus replacing her with a different actress for the opening syndicated Charles In Charge episode, Amittyville. I liked the first actress better than the replacement. Well, at least you had Michael Pearlman still in that episode. Also Michael Pearlman(thank you again for visiting sitcom on-line Message board) noted that there was a riff during the 100 episode celebration that he was at between Scott Baio and Willie Aames. Possibly due to Willie Aames' religious beliefs.

These aren't sitcoms but:

Star Trek: The whole cast (except possibly DeForrest Kelley) hate Shatner.
Shatner and Nimoy did not get along during the series. There seems to have been jealousy between them. Since the movies though, they have become really good friends.

Star Trek The Next Generation: There is a rumor that has been going around for years that a producer sexually harrassed Gates McFadden and got her fired when she turned him down. She did come back to the show for the third season on and coincidentally that producer was not working there anymore so there does seem to be some truth to the rumor.

By the mid '90s Barker and another former model in Holly Hallstrom went into a feud that to this very day never fully went resolved and it had to do w/ Barker's alledged weight issues w/ Holly, which actually in truth is more of Barker's hounding of Holly for testifying against Barker in Dian's case v. Barker. Things became really worse by the late '90s into the very early 2000s w/ a new production company coming along and the exits of two other former long-time models in Janice Pennington and Kathleen Bradley as well as production assistants Sharon Friem and later on Linda Reigert (Dunphy), who were all alledgedly fired b/c they testified against Bob Barker in his case vs. Holly Hallstrom. There was also another rumor surrounding Bob Barker that there was an alledged policy limiting the number of African-American people to become contestants, and this rumor happened almost around Barker's final year w/ TPiR.

Here's a few other shows both sitcom and non-sitcom which had backstage turmoil:

Sitcoms:
"What's Happening!!" - S3 had to be the most turmoil-driven of the 3 seasons. One was the exit of Mama Thomas (Mabel King) and the other was Rerun's demands for more money (Fred Berry), which was part of what contributed to ABC canning the show after 3 seasons.

"What's Happening Now!!" - Rerun's (Fred Berry) demands for money continued here again and by the end of S1, the producers had enough of this and Rerun was gone after the 1st season.

Non-Sitcoms:
"Mission: Impossible:" In S1, the producers had a number of problems thanks to star Steve Hill and his on-going religious Jewish faith sabbaths.

Also, there were problems w/ Martin Landau and Barbara Bain over their salaries.

In regards to Hollywood Squares, i've heard that Whoppie Goldberg definetly rubbed some people the wrong way during the taping of the 2000's version of the show. Apparently her and Tom Bergeron did not get along at all and during her final years on the show she was very unhappy.

He has always rubbed me the wrong way. He comes off as such an egotistical *******. And him not wanting too many black people as contestants...ugh! Barker's a ****-eater.

Which was really obvious esepcially during S4 when:

1). It was her that comissioned the awful "Double or Nothing" bonus round.
2). W/ that endgame, they kept having to keep contestants overnight b/c of constant turmoil.
3). She kept asking the late Roger King for salary increases.
4). When the late Roger King, exec in charge of King World (now owned by CBS-TV Distribution) decided to deflate Whoopi's ego, Whoopi left the show along w/ regulars Caroline Rhea and head writer Bruce Vilanch (though Vilanch would appear in a few post-Whoopi eps.).

What happened on Home Improvement?

I think it had to do w/ the cast giving Jonathan Taylor Thomas the silent treatment once he returned back to the show and lying to the cast about why he actually left the show.

Facts of Life: The girl who played Blair refused to be on an episode the dealt with Natalie losing her virginity.

Golden Girls: It is rumored that Bea Arthur and Betty White did not get along

Charmed: Alyisa Milano and Shannen Douherty did not get along

Dallas: It is rumored that Donna Reed (the 2nd Ms. Ellie) and Larry Hagman did not get along well or work well together

The Cosby Show: It is rumored that Cockroach was written out the show as a recurring friend of Theo's cause he refused to get a hair cut and the rifts between Lisa Bonet and production/Bill Cosby

The issues between Lisa Bonet and Bill Cosby, I believe was that Cosby was upset that Lisa decided to participate in a movie called "Angel Heart", which was fairly racy. Cosby threated his TV kids as if they were his own kids. Thus, he felt that Lisa was being possessed by a negative influenence.

What happened with "The Facts of Life" was that Lisa Whechel, who played Blair, was a Born-again Christian. She wasn't confortable with out-of-wedlock sex being portrayed.

This is why we should never take these shows seriously. We all must remember that T.V. is for entertainment value only, and that we shouldn't base our life on them.To start ,on I LOVE LUCY,I believe that there were friction between her and VIVIAN due to the fact that LUCY wanted VIVIAN to be at least 10 pounds heavier than her so that she would look good.As for BOB BARKER,every one knows that he was a horny old leach, but now racist too?!?If that true,I must re-evaluate him as a game show host.
