I am curious to hear what anybody thinks about this. Can another movie become even bigger than the box office of 'Titanic'?
Keep in mind, 'Titanic' grossed $600,788,188. The next closest movie to that impressive number since it premiered in 1997 is Shrek 2 at $441,226,247 in 2004.

Good question. I remember back in the days when movies were first called BLOCKBUSTERS. I believe it all started with the movie JAWS. One of my all-time fave movies. It even made the Guinness Book of World Records. As time passed and other movies soon surpassed that record, it almost became the norm for a new hit movie to be the new "king". I would be interested in seeing WHEN the Titanic record is broken. That would have to be some awesome movie, don't you think? ;)

I think so, eventually. Looks like Shrek 2 came sort of close. You can factor in inflation too. In five years, the price of a movie ticket will cost more than it did when Titanic hit theaters in 1997. It will take less movie goers to achieve the same $$. I remember reading an article that compared the box office take of Gone With The Wind and Titanic. It factored in inflation, and with the adjusted numbers, GWTW came close to Titanic, if my memory is serving me correctly, and that's a big IF, lol.
Titanic was a true anomoly. A three hour long "date movie" that made 600 million dollars domestically.
Another thing to factor in was that the film had lots of repeat customers. I remember reading about clubs that were formed by fans who had seen the film dozens of times.
Today it's rare that you get that much time to see a movie so many times in the theaters.
Even the most popular Summer blockbusters of 2008 will be on DVD before Christmas.

I worked in a movie theater for 6 1/2 years, and there were many blockbusters during my watch. I always wondered which one would break Titanic's record - and none of them ever did. The Dark Knight could very well be the one. Like Irene said, it'll be interesting to see which one finally breaks the billion dollar mark.

If you take inflation into account, Titanic is actually not the number 1 movie. Gone With the Wind is. :)
