SOPHIA PETRILLO-102.
Longtime Miami resident Sophia Petrillo passed away early Tuesday surrounded by family and friends at the Shady Pines assisted living center in Miami Beach, FL after a long illness.
Predeceased by husband Sal Petrillo and by her son Phil Petrillo.
She is survived by daughters Dorothy Zbornak-Hollingsworth of Atlanta, Ga, Gloria Petrillo of Escondido, CA, and brother Angelo. Also survived by extended family Rose Nylund-Dunn and Blanche Devereaux, both Miami residents.
Sophia Petrillo was born in April 1906 in Sicily to Papa and Eleanor Angelo, with two brothers, Angelo and Vito, and two sisters, Regina and Angela. She immigrated to the United States in 1923 where she resided in Brooklyn, NY. Following her husband's passing, she moved to Miami with her daughter Dorothy and after surviving a stroke in 1984, went on to co-run the South Beach Hotel "Golden Palace" at the age of 86.
She resided for many years with her longtime friends/family Rose Nylund-Dunn, Blanche Devereaux, and daughter Dorothy Zbornak-Hollingsworth at 6151 Richmond St which has since been used as the exterior for several film productions.
Sophia was well known for her colorful stories and spunky character. She once stated that she had lived through "two world wars, 15 vendettas, four operations and two Darrins on Bewitched".
She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Thanks for the memories (and the Medicare) and rest in peace. We love you!
In leu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Lewy Body Disease Association at https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=9772.
