View Full Version : The Real Michael Evans story from the book titled-"The Jeffersons"
TVFactFan 07-22-2008, 11:21 PM Book info: "The Jeffersons" by M. Howard Gelfand, 1983
The section below explains what led to his depature from the Show
"Success can be harder to take than failure, and that was the way it was for Michael Evans. When the Jeffersons became a hit after spinning off from "All in the Family" a new Michael Evans appeared. Suddenly he started complaining that his role was too small, and quarreled with the show's writers.
Lear later observed that it was "a lot of success to take very quickly." Lear recalls: "Part of my memory is that he was being given poor advice. He was steered incorrectly to assume that he was much more important on the show. There must have been somebody teling him we couldn't do without him."
Michael kept complaning , And then, after the first 13 episodes of the "Jeffersons" had been made, he approached Lear.
"how can I get off this show? he asked.
Perhaps he thought Lear would sweet talk him into staying and give him better parts. If so, he was wrong.
"You could get off by just telling me you wished to," said Lear.
"I want off, " said Mihael.
"You're Off," said Lear.
Ireneparalegal 07-22-2008, 11:23 PM Oh wait, you are quoting Lear from a book? The same man who says GOOD TIMES IS A SPIN-OFF?????
If you believe Lear in this book, then you have to believe him when he says GOOD TIMES IS A SPIN-OFF. ;)
catlover79 07-22-2008, 11:24 PM Oh boy, here we go again?? ;)

Had to put a end to this.
Ireneparalegal 07-22-2008, 11:27 PM Had to put a end to this.
I looked up that book and it doesn't say THE REAL MIKE EVANS STORY.
Jude The Obscure 07-22-2008, 11:28 PM Isn't this basically the same thing already stated in another thread?
TVFactFan 07-22-2008, 11:35 PM I looked up that book and it doesn't say THE REAL MIKE EVANS STORY.
I titled the thread the real michael evans story. The book was titled-"The Jeffersons"
TVFactFan 07-22-2008, 11:36 PM Isn't this basically the same thing already stated in another thread?
NO, in the other thread it was stated he left to work on Good Times and that was False
Ireneparalegal 07-22-2008, 11:37 PM NO, in the other thread it was stated he left to work on Good Times and that was False
And you think books are NEVER wrong?
Did Mike Evans sit down and agree to this book or was it unauthorized?
Books are written all the time without approval of the people mentioned in them.
Jude The Obscure 07-22-2008, 11:41 PM NO, in the other thread it was stated he left to work on Good Times and that was False
And NO.......I'm not talking about THAT
What you stated in your original post was already discussed in another thread. So it's a rehash.
Ireneparalegal 07-22-2008, 11:42 PM You said it Jude.
:horse:
Goodnight.

Since I had the book I just decided to post for any of Jeffersons Fan who was interersted in knowing why he left the show.

:horse:
Goodnight.
Sleep Tight-lol
Ireneparalegal 07-22-2008, 11:46 PM If that is the case for you, why not make a thread titled MIKE EVANS REASON FOR LEAVING and then post what you posted here instead of trying to blame some old lady who is now dead by claiming her role was too large and that is why Mike was crying like a big fat baby?
You stated Zara Cully's role was his reason for leaving and you have YET TO PROVE THAT! It is one thing to say he bitched abt his role being small, it is another to claim that a beloved actress was to blame.
You still haven't proved anything as far as Zara Cully is concerned.

Brie already proved it a long time ago. You haven't proven anything. All that proves is MIKE EVANS WAS ONE BIG, FAT, STUPID, CRYBABY WITH CRAP FOR BRAINS!!!!!! Thank you for making me change my mind abt him. He was ONE CRYBABY.

that's certainly what it looked like
Ireneparalegal 07-23-2008, 12:03 AM that's certainly what it looked like
No, that's what it is. One bitches and complains because his role is small rather than be happy for having a job on tv. What a moron. JERK.
Still doesn't mean that Zara's role had anything to do with it. Not at all.

Well I'm not going to say Sherman or Isabel because they were the stars, so the obvious choice is Zara. Who else?
Ireneparalegal 07-23-2008, 12:09 AM Well I'm not going to say Sherman or Isabel because they were the stars, so the obvious choice is Zara. Who else?
Duh! Zara's role wasn't that large either. Who can we blame for that?
TVFactFan 07-23-2008, 12:15 AM Duh! Zara's role wasn't that large either. Who can we blame for that?
What do you mean her role wasn't large?-lol It damm sure wasn't SMALL

How about the other people I named in my other post........Paul, Roxie, Franklin. All of their rolls were bigger than Zara's. I would say that Paul and Zara were neck and neck. But Roxie and Franklin rolls were big.
The blame lies with Mike and no one else

Make sure you pay attention to just Lionel and Mother Jefferson. No one else
Brieannas21 07-23-2008, 12:27 AM I need to go the toilet soon
What in the world does that mean?????
Brieannas21 07-23-2008, 12:29 AM Make sure you pay attention to just Lionel and Mother Jefferson. No one else
Why???? I already know out of all of the other supporting cast members who had the biggest roll.
TVFactFan 07-23-2008, 12:39 AM Why???? I already know out of all of the other supporting cast members who had the biggest roll.
Can you just do me that one favor and focus on them two-lol

I don't know if I could do that, because I doubt that Zara was the reason for Mike leaving.

I'm going to post a zara/mike thread tomorrow so you can see what I mean.

That wouldn't be a fair comparison because they weren't the only secondary cast members.
TVFactFan 07-23-2008, 09:16 AM That wouldn't be a fair comparison because they weren't the only secondary cast members.
yeah but they were part of the jefferson family
Brieannas21 07-23-2008, 11:10 AM yeah but they were part of the jefferson family
What does that have to do with anything? They were still a part of the cast.
TVFactFan 07-23-2008, 11:29 AM What does that have to do with anything? They were still a part of the cast.
Because they both had bigger roles than the Willises and Mr. Bentley since they were the SON and MOTHER
LoveMrsG 07-26-2008, 05:26 AM Y'all are making my head spin with this Mike/Zara thing! And if it was already discussed in a prior thread, let me say in agreement with a previous post...

Hey Solomon, she did put LOL in her post, so don't take it so seriously.
Coffee Florence 07-05-2009, 12:28 AM This thread features a pretty unproductive and stupid argument about what is actually an interesting topic: the behind the scenes truths about the two Lionels.
If people have other rumors or speculations to share about this, let's get back to that instead of ad hominem attacks. It's fine, IMO, toi criticize each other, but offer something the rest of us might want to read too-- about the jeffersons!

That argument happened a year ago. I don't think anyone's fighting anymore.

So WHAT is the truth then? Mike Evans wanted a larger role and he called Norman Lear's bluff and it backfired and he got fired. Is that the TRUTH??
Then how did Mike Evans end up coming on the show later on and why did he leave again???

He returned because Sherman Hemsley ran into him in the summer of 79 and talked him into coming back.
Why he left again is something I don't know

For a self-proclaimed expert, your knowledge hardly lives up to the hype.

I'm an expert on identifying STUPID PEOPLE and that's exactly what you are, a extremely stupid person who adds nothing to this board. Which means you should post on the stupid people message where the Jeffersons would be misspelled and look like this
Jefersons
GOODBYE

Why the animosity between you and Coffee Florence?
Mike Evans made a VERY bad judgement. Just to have ANY part of one of the top sitcoms of that entire era is HUGE. Even as a secondary role as Lionel he would've made MILLIONS of dollars over the course of the show and he could've asked for other incentives.
Then he could've parlayed that into something else like how Sherman got Amen. Even if it was a smaller role Mike could've still been working.
He should've realized how LUCKY he was to be on a HUGE tv show that MILLIONS watch every week. You don't get those kinds of ratings these days with a zillion channels out there!
Coffee Florence 07-14-2009, 12:47 AM I am sorry Life Adjuster. I apologize for sounding so rude. I was just teasing because you braggged that you are THE expert.

Not a true expert because I still dom't know certain thing about the show llike
Why Mike Evans left again
Why Berlinda Tolbert left
I know why the 2nd lionel left, Damon Evans, because he wanted more money
