It was fun playing tag during recess when I was a kid in school but the kids of today can't do that because if they touch someone it's considered sexual harassment.

Same here Sonny. I miss them too. That is why I so enjoy having a 6 year old son to help me feel young again. He loves to play tag and he loves to do the whole, "Eenie meanie, miney, moe..." with me. I bought him a jump rope and he learned those jump rope songs and games that the young kids do and it brings back so many memories of when I would jump rope with my friends. "Ice cream soda, Hawaiian punch...who is the name of your honey bunch...a...b...c..."

I miss playgrounds! i remember having morning and afternoon recess. playing on the jungle gym was so much fun! my first grade teacher had a jungkle gym in the classroom! no lie. i had a dentist by the name of dr. happytooth (no joke) and he had a jungle gym in the waiting room.
gym was fun too, i loved playing jail ball and scooter ball. scooter ball we'd sit on these plastic yellow or red squares that had wheels on the bottom and move ourselves across the floor playing "hockey"
and in middle school they had this routine everyday called "swish". the school nurse would come to each classroom with trays of cups filled with mouthwash. and we would have to all use the mouthwash at a certain time each day. and then a classroom "helper" had to collect the cups aftwerwards. gross!

I remember growing up in our neighborhood, all us boys use to play pick-up football and softball games. We would have 10 to 12 boys playing, sometimes for 3 or 4 hours a day, everyday. We also played kick ball (which i really loved) and at night we would play kick the can. Those were the good ol days. With the computers and video games they have today, you don't see kids playing games like we did when we were kids.

I remember all those fun childhood games too. When I was little, it was considered one of the deadly sins to waste nice weather staying indoors. We played outside all summer long. We used out imagination to come up with some really interesting games and adventures. Kids these days just don't do that anymore. We didn't arrange "play dates" either. We just went up to our friend's door and asked if they could come play.

Of course with all these creeps running around, it's real scary to let your kids out of your sight! :(

I remember days where my brother and i and a few friends would get on our bikes and ride around our neighborhood all day long. Maybe we would stop at one friends house to do something, like throw a ball around, but for the most part, we would just ride around - there were so many cool trails in the woods around the elementary schools to explore.

Riding my bike in the city isn't nearly as much fun.

Oh yes, bike riding was big with my friends as well. We would make trails in the woods, build ramps and see who could jump the farthest. And of course all the bad accidents we had while riding are bikes, which wasn't too much fun.
But summertime wasn't all fun and games though. My brother and I use to go house to house in the neighborhood to see if we could find some yards to mow to make some money. And after we were done, we would get that 15 or 20 dollar check and hit the corner store to buy candy and junk with it. We thought we were rich.

Me, too. We had a lot of kids in our neighborhood, so often we'd play baseball, dodgeball, tag, freeze tag, duck duck goose, jump rope, etc. Being a kid in the 1980s/1990s was fun. Too bad we can't bottle up some of those times. SIGH...

I remember just being out all day. I see how kids are now hooked to the television or computers. They have no realization of what kind of world there is out there. I mean, we had to make-up stuff. We had to use our imaginations. I remember playing "camping". Growing up, my dad had a small RV. Me and my girlfriend would play "apartment" and act like we had this huge place, had boyfriends, cook dinner, etc. I also remember going over to her house and we would play "Chinese restaurant". She had this great set of play dishes and we made these great chinese menus. She would put on "mood music" and we would take turns being the customer/waitress. God, what memories and imagination we had. ;)

I also remembering when all of us kids on the street would gather for a game of baseball and play til it was dark or until our names were yelled because it was dinnertime. I remember I would eat real fast, just so I could go back outside and play. Coming inside was a horrible thought!!!!

I miss drinking out of the water hose.

I miss playing TV tag until it got so dark you couldn't see two feet in front of your eyes.

I miss laying in the grass and looking up at the clouds and making pictures out of the clouds.

I miss going to the drive in theater and not caring if there were a million bugs flying around. We got to see a movie outside. How cool is that?

Oh yes, I did some crazy stuff on my bike as a kid. We tried to jump everything on our bikes! I am amazed i survived.

The ultimate irony for me as an ametuer BMX daredevil was in 2001.
I bought a mountain bike to ride in the city.
I had not been on a bike for over a decade, but I wanted to capture the fun of bike riding I had in my youth...

A week later i fly over the handlebars and break my collarbone.

Good ones!!! I too remember drinking water out of the hose. No $3.00 water bottles. Good ol' fashion free water. :D

I remember buying things from the 2 different ice cream trucks that came down our street.

I also remember playing either Chinese jumprope or the other game that girls used to love to play, it was a toy that had a plastic circle that went around your ankle. It had a ball at the end of it and as you twirled it around with your one foot, you were to jump over the rope as it came around. Damn! I can't remember what that toy was called. ANYONE??????

You guys are bringing back some great childhood memories for me!!

Bike riding was mentioned, I remember bike riding ALL OVER THE PLACE as a kid, especially during the summer. And remember when none of us wore the helmet, elbow pads & knee pads, because they weren't even around. To this day, I still don't wear those when I bike ride. Figure I've gone this long, take my chances. But we turned out just fine!!

Irene mentioned that toy Skip It. I couldn't remember what it was called, either, but from what she describing, I knew exactly what she was talking about.

I was up north recently, walking around outside, and saw something I don't see in FL, I guess it's too hot, but I saw bunches of lightening bugs. I guess you can call them fireflys, too. We used to go out at night with a jar and try to catch lightening bugs. Of course, we'd let them go eventually.

Indoor activity - we still love to play board games!!

Sometimes I miss those days, the simpler times.

I remember the ice cream truck. One kid would scream "ice cream man", and there would be like fifty kids running out their front door with money in hand trying to catch him. Man i miss those days!

I also remember catching lightening bugs, Phoebe. We would have a contest to see who could catch the most. And i know this is mean, and i regret doing it, but sometimes we would pull the lights off of 'em.

Great thread - I love and hate it at the same time. I remember many of the things mentioned. Loved flashlight tag which was better than regular tag just because it was played at night. Also played patty cake (pat a cake) which really seems pretty lame these days. Running through the sprinkler was pretty cool though. I also remember getting bored at the end of summer and wanting to go back to school - sure wish I could go back in time. Didn't know then how good things were.

One of my fave memories is being able to walk EVERYWHERE on Halloween night and not being afraid of walking for miles. Nowadays, parents either walk in groups, stay in one neighborhood or go to the mall where you can be SAFE. I understand the dangers, don't get me wrong. But I just can't help how back then there was no talk abt being kidnapped by a stranger.
