I always thought you went there to get FINANCIAL HELP not JOB SEARCH ASSISTANCE-lol That's why I didn't understand why the Lady was asking J.J what kind of WORK EXPERIENCE he had so she can find him a job. Looked more like a EMPLOYMENT AGENCY-lol

Also if that was the case couldn't James have went there when he was out of work?

I believe they do both, I remember like 3 years ago I took my cousin to the Unemployment office and he had to fill out an application about his job history and some other stuff, and they talked to him about things he had experience in so that they could help him find work, Which was kind of stupid since he was like 19 at the time LOL

Not really there is an array of people who lose their job and they have to go and file unemployment.

The last thing the unemployment office wants you to do is collect unemployment. Their agenda is to make sure you find a job. I don't know how it is anywhere else, but here, you MUST DO A JOB SEARCH in order to collect your check. To me, that is ridiculous. If you lose your job and are able to collect unemployment, that means it is not through your fault that you are unemployed. You have worked and put into the system and that is why it is called unemployment INSURANCE, to insure you some sort of income while you are out of work.

I think it's like that here, I know my cousin had to report like every week or every other week on his job search ( don't think he actually did it). I remember one time I drove him to this meeting or something. So trying to collect unemployment is a job in it's self LOL

It sure is. Here, you are required to show on your forms what jobs you have applied for, etc. If you don't show any effort on searching or applying for jobs, you don't get your check. That is ludicrous to me. I mean, why should someone be forced to look for a job if they decide they don't want to work? Let me explain. When I quit this one job, I was very lucky to collect unemployment simply because I knew the law and the employer screwed up. The employer said since I quit, I couldn't collect unemployment. WRONG! I proved that I had good cause to quit. Anyhoo, I decided to take a year off from working so I could de-stress. This was when I decided to go back to college and become a paralegal. I didn't want to enroll right away, but I was made to look for jobs by the unemployment to collect my check, even though that was not my goal. I earned that unemployment insurance and I made sure I was going to keep getting it while I stayed home. ;)

I don't even think that my cousin had to show if he was actually looking for a job. I remember I told him that I was tired of driving him back and forth to the unemployment office since I was pregnant at the time. But it seem like he had to go to all of these classes on how to get a job and resume crap. And I think the only reason why he could stop reporting is because he went back to school and became a full time student. But that was a pain in the ass for me and I wasn't even collecting Unemployment LOL

When I was working for a steakhouse restaurant back in the '90s, it caught on fire and we were out of work for a least a month. We went filed for unemployment and were required to verify that we were looking for new work, even though they well knew that the restaurant was going to re-open!!
So stupid, we were entitled to those benefits, but made to feel like we were bums for wanting them.

Back to GT--that lady sure was the snootiest worker!! "Eugene Pruitt! EUGENE PRUITT!!!!"

Solomon, I was thinking abt that earlier. I wonder if she had some quota to fill for the department. It certainly seems like there must be some quota, why else would the unemployment office make it so that one HAS TO LOOK FOR WORK? Jude gave a good example and so did I on the previous page. Just give me my money that I worked hard for and am entitled to. Whether I look for work or not is none of your business.

The one thing I remember from this episode is when the lady said "Eugene Pruitt. Eugene Pruitt". I have the series on VHS but I haven't watched any of it in years becuase I haven't had a VCR.

What's the name of the episode? I need to see this again. Thanks for the reminding me of this one!

Ireneparalegal, i agree with what you said about the unemployment office. I've been there before to try to get a job but they're supposed to also give you a check of the money you made at your previous job while your waiting to get a job. Does a person get unemployment money if they got laid off? I don't think a person gets unemployment money from their previous job if they quit. It's not a person's fault when they're unemployed. How are unemployed people supposed to live when they have no money? It's the unemployment office's job to give unemployed people money so they can live and help them find a job. How is a person supposed to get some job skills when job supervisors don't wanna train people? Most job supervisors nowadays only wanna hire people that have experience for the job position but that's not right because unemployed people need jobs too especially since there's so many unemployed blacks. Then america wonders why there's so much crime in the inner city and ghettos. What are poor blacks supposed to do for money when they can't get a job? Then you also have jobs that pay poor blacks a sh*tty salary. How can anybody live off of $5, $6, $7 a hour with no medical and dental benefits? That's f*cking pathetic that jobs pay those salaries. That's slavery to me. I understand JJ and James frustration back then trying to get a job and wanting to get outta the ghetto. Did James ever have a job? I don't recall him working that much on Good Times.

Since we're on the subject of jobs, i've had several jobs that i hated because i don't get along with a lot of black men because a lot of them are always picking on me and laughing at me. I don't bother nobody and i think it's wrong for ignorant black men to bother me at a job. I had to quit a few jobs because of that. I'm not gonna come to work and be dissed and laughed at often. I love money and i need it to live but i'm not gonna be bothered with stupid ignorant ass black men at a job that bother me for no reason. I have a job right now working with mostly hispanic men, hispanic women, white women and i love it. There's only 5 other blacks at the job besides me. From now on, i don't want anymore jobs working with a lot of black men because they piss me off. That may sound racist to some of ya'll and i don't care. I feel this way about ignorant black men because they bring it on themselves. It's the same bullsh*t i had to deal with when i went to a black high school. I constantly got teased and laughed at by ignorant black men. Ignorant black men wonder why so many of their dumb asses are criminals and dead at a young age because they don't wanna be no f*cking nobody. They think the only way they can make it outta the ghetto is being a criminal, rapper, NBA athlete, NFL athlete. Most black men don't wanna work and that's a harsh truth that they don't wanna hear.

I don't why you can't do whatever you want when you collect unemployment. After all you put into it with the job you lost and you only get it for 26 weeks and it isn't that much. In MD where I live you do do it over the phone now. And they send you a form to fill out because you have to look for 2 jobs a week. Most of the time they don't check. But if they do how would they know if you really applied or not, especially now with all the people that apply for jobs.

Yeah I think that started in July of 2012 that when you lose your job now you only get 26 weeks. I think it should be 52 weeks and that's it.

What's the real reason behind the shocking growth in unemployment not just in America but in the whole of the Western world? Have we allowed the elites to draw their large salaries, dividends and share options whilst the ordinary working man has suffered, seeing their take home pay drop as the good manufacturing jobs have been shipped off to China where they get away with paying peanuts and no employment protection whatsoever? Why have we allowed this to happen when often it's the hard-pressed middle class which pay for an ever-increasing welfare bill? And what's the solution when many people have just lost confidence to apply for a job in the first place faced with an often bitchy workforce which can become a clique which is impossible to penetrate?http://rt.com/usa/jobs-us-employment-welfare-749/
