View Full Version : There is something wrong with the Cover of this Magazine
TVFactFan 07-11-2008, 11:41 AM Why wouldn't the Lionel Character be featured on the cover with his parents?? What was the Mother Jefferson charcater on the cover for??
It actually was really just supposed to be George and Weezie. I would think Damon would be asked to join the photo shoot before Zara Cully
TVFactFan 07-13-2008, 09:18 PM Watching the episode-"George's Alibi Right now on TV LAND and it just dawned on me that the outfits George, Louise, and Mother Jefferson are wearing in this episode are the same ones they have on in the Ebony Front Cover-lol
What did they take the PHOTO before filming this episode?-lol
GARFIELDKOOL 07-20-2008, 06:09 PM There is nothing wrong with that picture and Zara Cully has every right to be on the cover. Solomon man, show some respect.
The first few seasons wouldn't have as funny without Zara. She was like that special seasoning you add to meat to make it even better.
Ireneparalegal 07-20-2008, 06:51 PM Zara was like Fred Sanford. Funny as hell. Zara was the original GOLDEN GIRL. ;)

That Cover is the reason Mike Evans left the show. He was being pushed aside and it didn't make sense

I didn't like the second Lionel...
But he eventually came back (Mike Evans), why is that? Did they reconcile?
Ireneparalegal 07-20-2008, 10:05 PM How many TV Guide covers were there over the years where the whole cast or the principal actors did not appear? LOTS!!! This was not the first time nor the last.

She had passed away a year before he returned

I know Zara passed in the middle of the show's run, but is she the reason why he left and then came back??
TVFactFan 07-20-2008, 10:24 PM I know Zara passed in the middle of the show's run, but is she the reason why he left and then came back??
She was the reason he left, the reason for his return was Sherman Hemsley begging him to come back in the summer of 79

Oh okay, gotcha....yeah, the second Lionel just wasn't as great as the first. He didn't have the same expressions or mannerisms that the first Lionel did that made him so funny.
Brieannas21 07-20-2008, 11:41 PM She was the reason he left, the reason for his return was Sherman Hemsley begging him to come back in the summer of 79
I don't think she was the reason Mike left the show. I read it was something else.

Did they have an E! True Hollywood Story on this? I know they must've back in the day!! I've seen the All in the Family one at least twice. Now all the True Hollywood Stories they show on E! are of celebs and not the TV show ones! I miss those!!!

I read that his head got too big, and that he couldn't handle the pressure, So he asked Lear if he could leave the show and Lear granted him his wish. This is what I found....
"It was a lot of success to take very quickly," Lear said. "Mike began to have a difficult time with himself. He complained about the amount of material written for him, about how strong his character was or wasn't. I saw a young man who was having difficulty with his own success — not a new phenomenon. Part of my memory is that he was being given poor advice. He was steered incorrectly to assume he was much more important than he was on the show, and to make demands that were not about to be acceded to. There must have been somebody telling him we couldn't do without him."
At a wrap party, Evans asked Lear if he could leave the show and his request was granted on the spot. Damon Evans (no relation) took over from 1975-78 and the audience never knew the difference as far as the ratings went. Evans's only acting during that time was a small role on Danny Thomas's The Practice. He tried his hand at a few different businesses — raising dogs, remodeling and reselling houses — but he returned to the series after Hemsley went to bat for him with the producers. Again, Lear played the mensch: "If there's anything this company understands, it's that people grow, just like characters grow; in life they don't stand still. And that's why, when Mike said he was ready to come back, we were happy to have him."

LOL no it wasn't, Everyone had their turn. And it's not as if Zara had that many lines or took up the whole show. Most of the time she would say a few words to Lousie and she'll go and drink her bloody mary and take a nap
If you want to blame it on Zara then you'll have to blame it on Roxie, Franklin and Marla, they had twice as many lines and they were seen more than Zara was.

I think you need to look at season 1 again, florence was only in 4 eps, and some eps tom and helen wasn't seen at all
MOTHER JEFFERSON WAS IN ALL THE EPS of season 1, if not all, atleast 10/11 of 13

She was a cast member, she was there from the very being, so what were they going to do? Write her out? And why would they lessen her roll?
Just because you didn't like her, doesn't make it the reason why Mike was big headed and decided to leave the show. He didn't have to leave, he could have stayed.

Brie, that's just Solomon's way of saying HE hated Zara. You provided a decent source of why Mike Evans left the show, and Solomon can't accept that. He's just trying to get into another worthless debate. Don't listen to him.

When you are singling out one cast member as being the reason why then YES, you have to back that up. If I were to say that behind the sceens that Will Smith and Janet Hubert got into a huge fight because she didn't think that she was getting enough screen time because of Karyn, and that was the reason that Janet left the show. You (Solomon) would ask me for proof, YOU would say that YOU want a SOURCE..... And If I were to say that, I read in between the lines. YOU (SOLOMON) would say, "That's not enough, I can't go off of what you believe happened, I want PROOF". So..............
THEREFORE, I WANT PROOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You cannot go blaming Zara character for Mike’s big headedness
Brieannas21 07-21-2008, 04:21 PM do you really think he would have said something like that publicly?
Someone who was there would have said something about it in an interview. A Producer, Writer, Director, THE CREATOR or someone would have said that it was because of Zara.

The cover of that Ebony magazine was supposed to be Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford sitting down, and Mike Evans standing over top of them.
But since he was pushed to the side so they can shove mother jefferson down our throat, he felt that he was being treated the wrong way

LMAO, You don't know, you don't know if that was taken during a dress rehearsal or what, actors aren't always around during rehearsal time, that's why they have stand-ins. I’m pretty sure that if he was there that he would have been asked to be in the pic.

He was not the main character. People in Hell want Ice water but they ain't gonna get it. I want to win the Lotto tomorrow but that ain't gonna happen.

And my point is when you're a secondary character you shouldn't get mad because you have fewer lines than someone else. And my point is if Mike would have stayed he would have had more camara time. My point is Mike got soooooo big headed and jumped ship to early. And my point is you can't blame Zara for Mike leaving when Paul, Roxie and Franklin had more lines and screen time, than Zara had in just about all of the episodes except for maybe 2. And my Last point is before you start blaming another actor You should have a SOURCE and scan the article or paste a link where you got your information from.

You implied that Mike left the show because Zara was getting too much airtime. You implied he should have been on the cover of Ebony instead of Zara (says who? You?). Ebony can and they did, do what they want to do as far as covers are concerned. They probably showed up on a day when Mike WAS NOT available to take a pic.
In the eyes of EBONY, I guess they felt the real stars were those three and not Mike. Did you ever think of that Solomon? As a researcher, you have to think of ALL THE AVENUES, not just one...yours. That is what I had to do in the law office when researching the law. I didn't just research the obvious, I had to research EVERY LITTLE THING that may apply to what it was I was researching. A good researcher has to ask many questions. And a good researcher has to look into all things possible.
Solomon, maybe you are onto something, but so far Brieanna provided one great source. Still like I said Did it dawn on you that maybe there are many other reasons why Mike was not on the cover? Maybe he DECLINED. Maybe he was ill that day when Ebony was there? Maybe Mike already did a cover (TV Guide or some other magazine) and did not want the spotlight this time. What was the article that was in EBONY? Was it an article based on those three actors? Did the article mention Zara in it? There are 100's of questions that I can list. Since you are a researcher, can you tell me abt the article that was in that particular edition of EBONY?

Biography
Though Mike Evans was roundly known to 1970s prime-time devotees as Lionel Jefferson, the scion of dry-cleaning entrepreneur George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley) and his wife, Louise (Isabel Sanford), on producer Norman Lear's The Jeffersons (1975-1985), the bulk of his career actually spanned three hit '70s sitcoms, all created by Lear: All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and Good Times. Evans then parlayed his efforts into prime-time miniseries before fading from the limelight in the '80s and '90s. Born Michael Jonas Evans on November 3, 1949, in Salisbury, NC, Evans moved to southern California with his family during childhood, and studied acting at Los Angeles City College after high school. Not long after Evans graduated from LACC (in 1971), the socially conscious mega-producer Lear cast the young man as Lionel Jefferson, the son of bigoted Archie Bunker's next-door neighbors George and Louise Jefferson, in his groundbreaking CBS series All in the Family. The program, of course, became a massive runaway hit during the summer of 1971, and carried its success until the fall of 1983. By 1975, however, Lear decided to "spin off" George and Louise into a series of their own, by having up-and-coming entrepreneur George strike it rich in the dry-cleaning business.
The Jeffersons premiered on January 18, 1975, (READ THIS PART CAREFULLY!!!!!!!!) but Lear used Evans as an element to help viewers transition between the two series -- by keeping Lionel on All in the Family for several months (the character moved temporarily into his parents' old house in Queens, and thus stayed next door to Archie Bunker). Evans remained with the series until the fall of 1975, and departed amicably to pursue other interests -- specifically, an assignment co-creating (with Eric Monte) and scripting one of Lear's other sitcoms, Good Times (1974-1979), itself a spin-off of Lear's Maude, which the producer had spun off of Lear's All in the Family. During his absence from The Jeffersons, Evans also appeared as Arnold Simms in the ten-hour ABC miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (1976). In the interim, Mike Evans was temporarily replaced by another young black actor, Damon Evans (no relation), on the Jeffersons set. Mike Evans returned to The Jeffersons to play Lionel in the autumn of 1979. Over the remainder of the series run, the character of Lionel married Jenny (Berlinda Tolbert), the daughter of a neighboring biracial couple, and a year after Mike Evans returned to the series in 1979, the onscreen couple had a baby daughter. Over time, Lionel and Jenny separated, then divorced, with Evans permanently departing from the series in 1981. The Jeffersons marked Evans' last major television effort, though he appeared briefly in a 2000 episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. During his later years, Evans invested heavily in southern California real estate. He died of throat cancer, at age 57, on December 14, 2006. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
This is the title of that Ebony article where the picture of the three characters appear:
"The Jeffersons: A look at life on black America's new `Striver's Row'" Ebony 31 (January 1976): 112-115.
