View Full Version : When you think of the Beatles...
mrs.gingerhinkley 07-08-2008, 04:05 PM This is just a random question that popped into my head. When someone mentions the Beatles or you hear one of their songs or something, what immeadiatly pops into your head? The early 'Love Me Do' Beatles or the later, 'White Album' Beatles?
I always think of them like when they were on the Ed Sullivan show: young, cute, and innocent. But I know a lot of my friends associate the Beatles with their later works.
Also, which music do you prefer? The earlier, upbeat, young love songs or the more abstract, counterculture stuff of the late sixties?
catlover79 07-08-2008, 04:07 PM I used to like their early stuff better, but I have to say I'm now a bigger fan of the later stuff. What I like most about the Beatles was they weren't afraid to experiment with different musical styles - they weren't afraid to get weird. (How much of that music was influenced by their drug use, however, I don't know). The songs from the Sgt. Pepper/Abbey Road era are unmatched to this day!
Nighthawk76 07-08-2008, 04:22 PM When I think of The Beatles I think of the music they made Rubber Soul and beyond. They were the greatest songwriters ever and it was really beginning with Rubber Soul and Revolver that they became serious songwriters. Prior to that point, their music was more along the line of feel good, bubblegum pop music. The genuis of their lyrics was partially pure musical talent with a little bit of the influence of drugs thrown in.

MickeyMac 07-08-2008, 06:03 PM I like the middle period the best. Help and Rubber Soul are their best LP's for my money(the British versions that is. Revolver is excellent too but I can so do without "Yellow Submarine". For the later period Abbey Road is good and both Pepper and The White Album have their moments.
Yooch 07-08-2008, 06:14 PM I like the earlier, upbeat, young love songs. When I think of the Beatles, I remember when they took America by storm. I also remember (I was in junior high) a friend talking about them. I said I hadn't heard of them. I went over to his house and he had the 33rpm album 'Meet the Beatles'. Played a few songs on it "I want to hold your hand" was the first one I heard. Hooked me right away; I've been a fan ever since. It introduced me to the whole British Rock. Then came The Dave Clark Five, Jerry and the Pacemakers, the Kinks, Zombies, Troggs, Moody Blues, Searchers and so on. So when I hear the Beatles mentioned I also think about how the rest of the 60's decade was sort of dominated by this type of music, and initiated, in a way, by the Beatles.

I like the earlier stuff in general because of its innocent nature. The later stuff is also good, but not as good as the earlier stuff. "The White Album" is one of my favorite albums.
The first thing that pops in my head is Yellow Submarine when I think of the Beatles. And its not even my favorite song by them. lol! I like the earlier period of their music best.

You said it Gene. ;)
I think of John Lennon's music and I also remember the music of Paul McCartney and Wings during the 70's. It is hard to not think of the Beatles when I hear either John's music or Paul's music, although, their music stands alone.
Did anyone catch Ringo on Larry King the night before last? It was his birthday and he was the guest. Good to see Larry call him Ringo and NOT George.
