I know I said I'd do "Chuckles," and I still def. intend to. But Valerie (LauraNamesake) asked me earlier about this ep, so I decided to go ahead and do it.

In the newsroom, Ted enters, and asks where Lou is. Mary says he has a lunch date, and he asked her not to say anything about it. Sue Ann comes in and announces that she saw Lou out w/ his ex-wife. She says she just can't understand it. "I mean, why buy day-old bread, when you can have a cupcake piping hot from the oven?" Murray replies, "Yeah, but how many times has it been re-heated?" Lou and Edie return. Lou announces that Edie is getting married again. Ted says, "You know what the song says, 'Love is lovelier the second time around.'" Lou glares at him. "Songs can be wrong, Lou!"

Lou sits in a bar that night. Mary comes in. Lou tells her he just wanted to find a place to be alone. Mary asks if he wants to talk about it. "I found a place, Mary. All that's missing is the 'alone' part!" Mary asks if he still has feelings for Edie. Lou says no. "After 23 years of marriage, Edie and I got a separation. Two years ago, we got a divorce. Now she's getting married again. Don't you see? Edie and I are drifting apart!"

Back in the newsroom, Ted is trying to tell Murray knock-knock joke. "Knock-knock." "Who's there?" "Anna Maria Albergheti." "Anna Maria Albergheti who?" "That's the part I haven't figure out yet." Mary comes out of Lou's office. Ted asks if Lou is feeling any better. Mary says yes. Murray says he hopes so, b/c he had breakfast w/ Lou yesterday, and Lou got into an argument with his waffle. Ted says he understands how Lou feels b/c he went through something similar once. He used to have a yo-yo as a kid. He never cared much for it, but then he sold it to another kid for a quarter. He then got jealous when the other kid did tricks w/ it. He says he still feels bad about selling his yo-yo. Murray replies, "Look at it this way, Ted. That yo-yo was prob. either lost or broken years ago. Meanwhile, you've still got the quarter."

Edie comes in to invite Mary to the wedding, and to thank her for being the only one of Lou's friends who isn't awkward around her. Mary responds by stammering awkwardly. Lou comes out, and sees Edie there. Edie explains that she came to invite Mary to the wedding. Lou tries to act like he forgot all about it. "That's right. He mentioned it to me....that he forgot," Mary says, trying to help (and clearly failing, LOL). Mary leaves. Edie tells Lou she wants to invite him, too. She asks how he feels about her getting married. "Well, for awhile there, I was having a hard time. Ask Murray. He was there when I had the fight with the waffle!" But he says he's all over it now. Edie leaves. Mary asks if he's going to go. "Of course. Right after I go to the Pope's wedding!"

Lou has locked himself in his office. Sue Ann wishes she could rush in and, "Hug him all over!" Murray says that would solve her problem, not his. Lou's daughter, Janey, comes in Mary introduces her to Sue Ann. Sue Ann asks Janey if Lou has told her anything about her (Sue Ann). Janey says no. "Well, he should have. You're old enough!" Lou comes out, greets Janey, then invites her into his office. Janey asks him to come to the wedding. Lou says he'd feel out of place. He asks what the guy is like. Janey says he's average. "I knew it. Your mother's marrying a guy right off the rack." After some begging, Janey manages to convince Lou to go.

Lou tells Mary he's going after all. She's surprised. Lou asks why. Mary says it's not her business, he doesn't need her advice, and she doesn't want to pry. Lou says it's never stopped her before. Mary gives in. "Sit down, Mr. Grant." She explains that going to an ex-wife's wedding is a nice gesture for a sophisticated, "today" kind of guy. "That's me, Mary." "No, Mr. Grant, it's not. It's....Sonny Bono." She says she doesn't think Lou can take it.

Lou tells Mary about a boxing match in Basic Training in which he was hit in the kidneys. "Have you ever been hit in the kidneys, Mary?" "Not in years." Lou graphically describes his injuries. "Got the picture, Mary?" "Lord, yes!!" (The look on Mary's face as Lou was describing it all was hilarious, LOL. I wish I could describe it, but you just have to see it.) Lou explains that in spite of all the pain, and the insults from his opponent, he lasted all 5 rounds. "If I survived that, do you think one little, insignificant wedding is gonna hurt me?" "Yes, I do." "So do I, but I already promised the kid I'd go."

Edie and her husband say their vows. Lou says he didn't fall apart. "Say it, Mary: 'Lou Grant can take it." Mary replies, all choked up, "You....can take it." Mary starts to cry as the bride and groom kiss. Lou says he wants to say something to Edie. "Oh....you're going to do that, too?" (Still all teary, of course, LOL!) Edie thanks Lou for coming. "I came to your last wedding, didn't I?" Lou replies. Mary continues to choke up. Lou walks her out.

Lou takes her back to the bar. She's still upset. Ted and Murray show up. They say they knew Lou would be coming in after the wedding, and they wanted to see how he was. Lou says he's OK, but Mary's not. Ted promises to make her laugh with his knock-knock joke. "This better be a pretty funny knock-knock joke. I lost a wife today!" Ted and Murray do the joke again. This time Ted has an answer to "Anna Maria Albergheti who?" "Anna Maria Albergheti in a taxi, honey." Marry actually does start laughing, and they all begin singing. (And before anyone asks, no, I don't know what the song was, LOL.)

The things most memorable to me about the episode are during the ceremony Lou whispers to Mary "He's losing his hair. I have a lot more hair than he does." The end of that scene was touching when Lou said to Edie, in a loving tone just before he kissed her, "Take care of yourself, dear."

That was another great, and touching episode.
I remember the scene where Lou describes getting hit in the kidneys, and the look on Mary's face...and I remember the "Lou Grant can take it" part.
But in the midst of that drama, I'd forgotten how Murray was just CRACKING on Sue Ann and Ted in that episode!

Jack Riley is super cool in my book because he is from my neck of the woods - Cleveland!! He got his start on some of the local TV shows here.

He was in another episode of MTM. Along with, Mr. "Hi there. Barry Barlow", he was one of Mary's classmates at her high school reunion in the episode, "Didn't You Used To Be....Wait....Don't Tell Me". He was the guy who had all of the plastic surgery since thier gradutation. Don't remember his name....
