'90210' Exclusive: Doherty Heads for the 'Hills'
Jul 2, 2008, 03:01 AM | by Michael Ausiello

Those of you who know me know that nothing brings me more happiness than a good, old-fashioned Shannen Doherty item. So it seems only fitting that I should kick off my new EW gig with a juicy yarn about the legendary Hollywood hellraiser. And it's not just any yarn, either -- it's the best yarn ever!

Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that Doherty is currently engaged in formal talks to -- wait for it, wait for it -- reprise her role of Brenda Walsh on The CW's breathlessly anticipated 90210 update!

(The crowd roars. The crowd's on their feet! The crowd.. is... me!)

According to my Peach Pit mole, Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the producers behind el nuevo 90210, recently met with the tempestuous tabloid mainstay to gauge her interest in returning to the zip code from which she was banished in 1994. And by all accounts, she is interested. "But," whispers an insider with close ties to the reboot, "she wants to know what the story is going to be first." She also wants more money than they're apparently offering.

Yet creative/financial issues may not be the biggest obstacles standing in the way of Doherty's homecoming. The anger-management poster gal has left a long list of enemies in her wake, among them once and possibly future co-stars Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth. Doherty and Garth, in particular, got along so badly, they were like a '90s version of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. (A fistfight between them was even chronicled in Spelling's recent memoir.) So while Doherty's willingness to return suggests she's ready to let bygones be bygones, the feeling may not be mutual.

"There's still some animosity there," acknowledges a source, who says Garth wasn't exactly jumping for joy upon learning of Doherty's potential hiring. However, counters Garth, "A lot of time has passed, and I'm a big girl. I'd have no problem with her coming on the show."

That still doesn't resolve the pesky issue of Doherty's less-than-stellar rep. "They should demand good behavior and get rid of her quick if they don't get it," muses one top TV producer. "The danger is that the show becomes a big hit, and her participation is seen as essential. If that happens, and she's still a disruptive, dysfunctional actor, then they've got a big mess."

But nearly everyone seems to agree on one thing: It's a risk worth taking. "This is a win-win for all parties," points out a 90210 source. "Shannen has a shot to get back in the public eye and make things right with the show that gave her her career, and the CW can generate some much-needed buzz and guarantee some major sampling of 90210."

Not to mention the fact that I'll get to write more Shannen Doherty stories!

So, what do you think? Does Shannen need 90210 more than it needs her? And would you be more inclined, less inclined or as inclined to watch 90210 with Doherty on board? Sound off in the comments section below!

nope. Just posting the article.

I hope she does come back. It's the only thing that will make this show interesting.

Exclusive: Tori Is Out, Shannen Is In for 90210Remake!
By Kristin Dos Santos

If you're a fan of the O.G. Peach Pit posse, you might want to sit down, 'cause sources connected to the CW's new 90210 are spilling exclusive dish of OMG proportions.

In a nutshell: Shannen Doherty is in, Tori Spelling is out and Jennie Garth may be—wait for it—reuniting with Shannen on the screen.

(We'll pause while you find a paper sack to breathe into. Especially if your name happens to be Jennie Garth.)

A very reliable and very inside source who works on 90210 tells me exclusively that, "It is happening with Shannen. It's just a question of how long she'll shoot, whether it will be one day or ten, and what the storyline will be, but we are working on it and it is a very real thing."

Inside sources also confirm exclusively that Tori will not be able to appear in the season premiere for personal reasons. The new mom (she gave birth to a baby girl June 9) had been signed on to do "a few" episodes at the beginning of the season, but now that won't be happening.

As for Shannen's storyline, I'm told the details are still in the initial-concept stages, but the writers are hoping to get Shannen and Jennie together, onscreen, for a scene. Can you imagine?

Of course, the real question is, will they do it? "I don't think there's any love lost between Shannen and Jennie," says one rock-solid inside source. "But they are both adults now and professionals, and I don't see it being an issue. Everyone has their take on what happened back in the day, and I think the feeling is that it's time to move on. They were 19 and 20 when all of that happened and a lot has changed. And, you know, they're not moving in together, just shooting together for an hour and a half."

Another insider close to the negotiations points out: "I want to stress that Shannen has been very, very cool through this whole process. We have seen nothing like the behavior for which she was once famous for."

Awww...Who doesn't love a redemption story, right? As long as there are two red dresses in the dressing room, all should be right with the world, the ratings should go through the roof, and we 9-0 fans can start freaking out about how lip-smackingly juicy this remake just might turn out to be.

'90210' Shannen return: 5 pros (and cons) for bringin' on the Brenda
12:35 PM PT, Jul 3 2008

Now that we've had time to consider the news of Brenda Walsh's possible return to "90210" on the CW's reboot of the series this fall, it's time to evaluate whether this is a good or bad thing.

Our first reaction is good: It would mean Shannen Doherty reuniting with co-stars such as frenemy Jennie Garth, who’ll be back as Kelly Taylor, the girl who peaked in high school-turned-guidance counselor, and Tori Spelling, whose Donna Martin will be working in … wait for it … the fashion industry.

But who knows whether Doherty will actually seal the deal. She's reportedly already demanding more money and wants to see the final script before signing on (a true method actress!).

So while we wait, we've prepared a pro-con list. Would Brenda’s return be a career-reviving move for Doherty or spell doom for the CW?

GOOD: We get the scoop on Brenda’s whereabouts for the last couple of decades. Doherty left the cast so much sooner than her peers and, well, we could use the closure. Last we remember, she was supposed to be living happily in London with Dylan, but we also recall some discussion that they had broken up during the series’ final season.

BAD: Don’t count on a Dylan-Brenda reunion. Luke Perry (a.k.a. Dylan McKay) has already said he’s out. “It’s just not something I’ve thought about to be quite honest. I don’t see it happening,” he told Access Hollywood in June. And as the cast stands now, Brenda’s either going to be a singleton or a cougar. (Wait, that could be a good thing…)

GOOD: Maybe she could seduce a French student. Then we’d be able to hear that illustrious French accent of hers once more. (Surely you remember her charming the socks off of Dean Cain with it. Here, let’s reminisce: "Ah, yoo doo not need zee book."

BAD: Brenda could be, like, a mom now. And older “bad girls” that work, such as Amanda Woodward of "Melrose Place," are hard to come by. Doherty should know. She was a late addition to the cast of flailing Fox soap “North Shore,” but her character, the long-estranged sister of Brooke Burns’ character, wasn’t the show-saver that Locklear was for “Melrose Place.”

GOOD: Another possible fisticuffs between Doherty and Garth. It would blow Lauren vs. Heidi out of the water. US Weekly could give us regular updates. And it could so happen: Creator Aaron Spelling wrote in his memoir that the two came to actual physical blows after an argument on the set during “90210”’s heyday.

BAD: The dissolution of Doherty’s bad girl rep. She and Jennie could mend fences. The character of Brenda might be tame and boring now that she’s older and wiser. We’re not into boring. One of our all-time favorite Brenda moments was when she destroyed a science lab with a group of animal rights activists.

GOOD: Because we were sad when Oxygen ended “Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty.” It was like Brenda meets “Cheaters.” She’d help jilted girlfriends and boyfriends break up their bad relationships. A shame that not many can find Oxygen on their cable box. Her job as host of “Scare Tactics” was also pretty terrific.

BAD: What inane fashion trends might she spark this time? Once upon a time, Brenda helped push the bangs, the Seattle grunge flannel, the oversized blazers and scrunchies. Heaven help us from seeing Brenda rock leggings underneath a dress, espadrilles or polka dots. (We’re almost free of them!)

GOOD: She could save the CW. And, by extension, “Gossip Girl.” Think of a “90210”-“Gossip Girl” crossover! Blair meet Brenda, Brenda Blair. The thought alone makes us shiver. In a good way.

BAD: We might get attached. And then she’ll just up and ditch us again. She ditched Dylan, then she ditched her “Charmed” sisters. Who’s to say she won’t up and leave town again? We just don’t think we could take that kind of rejection.
