View Full Version : Favorite Headmaster Poll
LoveMrsG 06-28-2008, 06:24 AM Good morning everybody. :)
Coming from a bored college student who's out of class for the summer and nowhere to go but the Internet, LOL, I sort of inspired myself with the "Mr. Bradley" thread, if that doesn't sound too arrogant. :D
Anyway, I wanted to do a vote or a poll or whatever you want to call it. Everybody vote here for your favorite Eastland headmaster.
Your choices are:
1.) Mr. Crocker from the Facts pilot episode of "Diff'rent Strokes"
2.) Mr. Bradley from season 1
3.) Mr. Harris from season 2
4.) Mr. Parker from seasons 3-5
BTW, why weren't there ever any headmistresses of Eastland??? It was a show about young women growing up and starting careers in a previously entirely male-dominated world, right??? Why did it always have to be a MAN in charge of Eastland??? I know that that's changed since Blair's become headmistress of Eastland now, but still, why couldn't they have had a female boss over everything at least for one season? Thoughts? Opinions?
Nighthawk76 06-28-2008, 02:06 PM I'm going with Mr. Bradley. As I mentioned in the other thread, I enjoyed his realtionship with Mrs. Garrett. There was a lot of great comic moments between them.
I also like Mr. Parker. I think he and Mrs. G had some great moments too. I also loved Parker because he was played by Roger Perry, who played a airforce pilot in the classic 1967 Star Trek episode "Tomorrow Is Yesterday", and it is just a kick seeing him play such a different character in Mr. Parker.
LoveMrsG 06-28-2008, 04:10 PM I know what you mean. Like I said in my earlier post, Mr. Bradley's my own personal favorite. There's just something about him that's more personal, somehow. I can't describe it. It's like he's willing to be more open with the girls and be their friend and not just a bureaucratic, pencil-pushing headmaster.
However, I also know what you mean with Mr. Parker. There were a couple of episodes that painted him as someone who really cares about what's going on with all of his students and not just a bureaucrat. I loved the scene between Mr. Parker and Mrs. Garrett in "Read No Evil" that really portrayed the two characters as personal friends and not just a boss/employee relationship. Plus, in that episode you could really tell how much he was worried about Eastland. Then again in "The Source," you see Mr. Parker as someone who's really worried about what one of his students has gone through emotionally in Natalie's story of her abortion. I really wish the writers would've kept the Mr. Parker character going in that direction, but unfortunately after that, they seemed to have put him on a downward spiral and made him out to be a stupid, unreasonable boss always putting unfair demands on Mrs. Garrett to be his own personal caterer in addition to being the school dietician. It makes me so mad. The writers were doing a good thing with his character. They should've left well enough alone.
JoPol_wannabe 06-28-2008, 05:18 PM my list goes like this
1. Mr. Bradly
2. Mr. Crocker
3. Mr. Parker
4. Mr. Harris
I liked Mr. Bradley he was my favorite plus he was a good actor.
Mr. Crocker- I liked how stricked and stuck up he was. I never understood why they got rid of him after the pilot episode
Mr. Parker was ok but not my most favorite he asked why to much from Mrs. Garrett
Mr. Harris wasn't he like only in 2 or 3 episodes I don't understand why they even had him on there.
Ireneparalegal 06-28-2008, 05:45 PM I know I will be in the minority here, but frankly I couldn't stand any of them. I was glad to be rid of Mr. Bradley and have the show focus only on the four girls and Mrs. G.
LoveMrsG 06-28-2008, 07:59 PM Don't worry, Irene. There's nothing wrong with being in the minority. This is just about everybody's own opinions. As a matter of fact, you're probably more in the majority of viewers, since they went ahead and ditched Mr. Bradley after season 1. I guess everybody felt that the show should focus entirely on Mrs. Garrett and the girls and that the headmaster shouldn't have that big of a role anymore. But I do wish that in seasons 3 and 4, when it was looking like Mr. Parker was really going to turn out to be a good person and a good friend to Mrs. Garrett, that the writers would've left well enough alone. I hated it when they turned him into this kind of overbearing jerk who started constantly making unfair and unreasonable demands on Mrs. Garrett.
pfeifferobsessed 06-28-2008, 09:27 PM ms. blair warner would have to be my fave headmistress...but shes not on the list! considering your list...i dont really like any of them cause they were all kind of rude to mrs. g and that doesnt sit well with me!
LoveMrsG 06-28-2008, 10:10 PM I totally understand what you mean. At some point, all the headmasters were a thorn in Mrs. Garrett's side, even Mr. Bradley. I was just wondering who everybody's favorite headmaster was while all the girls were going to Eastland, which is why Blair isn't on the list, because she doesn't become headmistress, obviously, until she's grown and left Eastland.
Jude The Obscure 06-29-2008, 09:55 AM Mr Crocker and Mr Harris were both one note jerks.
Mr Parker was done well by Roger Perry, although he did become a one note jerk by the end.
Mr Bradley was just a lovable goofball--John Lawlor did him well.
Mr. Television 06-29-2008, 11:44 AM Mr. Bradley...he was a great guy. They should have kept him.
painmakeyourway 06-29-2008, 04:41 PM Personally, I wasn't particularly fond of any of the headmasters. They were all idiots, haha. Although, Mr. Bradley WAS occasionally funny when he wasn't being a jerk.

i totally agree! :D
Natalie1969 03-12-2010, 05:52 PM Mr. Bradley was more down to earth, more hands on. Mr. Harris deserves kudos for accepting Mrs. G's proposal to let the girls stay at Eastland and live/work over the cafeteria. He had good grounds to expel them.
jo's sister 03-16-2010, 01:36 PM i believe season 1 is the best for Mr.Bradley

RoryGilmore 03-16-2010, 11:07 PM Mr. Bradley
candycandy 11-22-2012, 05:59 PM Definitely MR. BRADLEY: he was the youngest one, he was soo hilarious, very down to earth, a bit a confidante to the girls in a goofy way + he was so funny when he was all over the moon over BLAIR s mum (on "like mother like daughter episode).
My 2d choice would be MR. PARKER: he always cracked me up whenever he ran to MRS. G for advice or to demand his order + he had good chemistry with the girls too.
RetroGuy2000 03-20-2014, 01:05 AM Mr. Bradley and Mr. Parker were the only headmasters with any depth to them. The man who played Mr. Parker, Roger Perry, brought a lot of nice, subtle nuances to his role, which would otherwise have been 'the heel'. Given the fact that he wasn't in a large number of episodes, he did well with the role he was given. He felt real.
But my favorite headmaster is Mr. Bradley, played by John Lawlor. It's really a shame they couldn't have brought him back for guest appearances during Seasons 2-3. Even though the was a bit of a jerk, you could tell that, in the end, he cared for the girls at Eastland.
'80sSitcoms 04-04-2014, 09:19 AM What always gets me when watching the season 2 kick-off is that there's no explanation for Mr. Bradley's disappearance. They could have at least mentioned something, even something as little as Mrs. Garrett telling the girls at the police station: "I just got off the phone with the new headmaster." Just that one word, "new", and we would at least have that sense of "Oh, okay, so Mr. Bradley's left Eastland."
But nothing?? It just bothers me and seems very odd since they go to the trouble of keeping continuity with cameos from the season 1 girls, but not one tiny mention of Mr. Bradley or a "new" headmaster.
RetroGuy2000 04-05-2014, 12:42 AM That's an excellent point. That single word, 'new', would have given quite a bit of closure to the character... not a lot, but something. But they were so focused on introducing Jo (FOL's Fonzie) that nearly everything else was neglected.
But this show was never good about saying goodbye to characters or giving closure to fans. It was always "jump on whatever's hot right now". I can think of many characters who were never given any sort of on-screen farewell: the Lost Girls; George Clooney; Miss Mahoney; the little street urchin girl Kelly, who disappeared around the time Edna got that mysterious huge delivery of meat...
'80sSitcoms 04-07-2014, 08:10 AM Exactly, "closure"---that's what it would have been, what would have been easy to do, yet it wasn't done. ??

Well, at least the Lost Girls were still around, although they should have at least had Nancy and Sue Ann have cameos in "Graduation". It's kind of surprising how, since the made a point to keep them included in the series to a degree, they didn't show them graduating with Blair and Jo. Odd...
As for Kelly...good riddance! lol I could not stand her. I was with Jo on that one, lol.
And Miss Mahoney cameos would have been nice too. :)
RetroGuy2000 04-07-2014, 10:30 AM I have some theories.
Miss Mahoney left Eastland in a scandal when it turned out she was pregnant and unmarried, something that had never happened to faculty in Eastland's 100+ year history. She left the school in disgrace, traveling to Hawaii.
At the end of the school year, Mr. Bradley booked a flight to Hawaii, realizing he was still madly in love with Miss Mahoney, who he had impregnated. He told no-one of this. He missed his flight, due to Molly's antics, but later caught the red-eye. They were married the next day.
The resulting scandal, when the Eastland school board learned of the affair, caused them to fire Mr. Bradley immediately. The next schoolmaster was hired right away, so by the time of the next school year, he had already been in the position for several months, hence Mrs. Garrett not referring to him as "new" anymore. The Eastland staff knew better than to speak of the scandal openly, thus Mr. and Mrs. Bradley were never mentioned again.
Sue Ann and Nancy had already entered the auditorium when Blair and Jo were in the auditorium lobby. That's why we didn't see them. Cindy was sitting in the audience; there's no way she would have missed the graduation of her roommate of at least two years (Sue Ann).
Kelly ended up as some of that mystery meat in the Halloween episode. It was a fate well-deserved, after all her shoplifting, lying, and scheming. Kelly brisket goes down well with buttered scones and quiche.
candycandy 04-17-2014, 09:15 AM I'm actually glad MR BRADLEY got married with MRS HOGMANEY cos they seem suit for each other lol: same kind if humour and that would explain why they never appeared after season 1, although i have to say i missed them! (they really cracked me up man!):talk:
PS: i meant MAHONEY oops!
