I thought a lot of their shows were great in the 70's, my favorite being All In The Family but I remember finding most of their 80's sitcoms boring. like designing women, evening shade and especially murphy brown. no offense to people who enjoy these shows. maybe its an acquired type of humor i don't get.

I can't say I know much about which were CBS sitcoms and which weren't, but of the three you mentioned then yes I'd agree. I never cared for any of those.

I loved Newhart, which was a 1980s CBS sitcom. Other than that, I never watched many CBS sitcoms in the 1980s. Mainly I watched the ABC ones.

Square Pegs and Charles In Charge were both CBS sitcoms of the 1980's. Though I didn't watch Square Pegs durring it's original run.

The way the 1970's was for NBC sitcoms, is the same way the 1980's was for CBS sitcoms

I love Kate & Allie - in fact I just ordered season 3, so yes I'll need to take some of my earlier sentiments back. I also liked the first season of Charles in Charge.

I hated Designing Women...still do. About the only CBS sitcoms I watched in the 80's were Newhart and Kate and Allie...both only after MNF was done for the year .

what's sad is designing women had the potential to be a lot funnier than it was. i remember watching episodes where some scenes would seem like they were leading up to some funny punchline/joke that never came. i think cbs was trying to cash in on the golden girls success by making a younger version of the show.

i didnt like alot of the cbs sitcoms of the 80s here is the short list of the ones i did like . gloria newhart goodnight beantown the first season of aftermash kate and allie charles im charge the 1984 sitcom er and the cavanaughs other than that esp in the late 80s cbs just had one junky sitcom after another drivel like live in heartland hard time on planet earth and coming of age there were a few others like the 4 seasons and fast times wich were ok but nothing special but overall cbs sure wasant the hit sitcom factory that it had been in the 70s

I completely thought CBS had horrible 80's sitcoms. They were honestly the network to watch in the 70's - they had so many great sitcoms, like All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Mary Tyler Moore, Maude, Good Times, and many others. The only sitcoms I watched on CBS inthe 80's were The Jeffersons and Designing Women occassionally. (And BTW, PunkyPOWER, Murphy Brown was a 90's show).

I guess it seems like every network was on and off in each decade. CBS was great in the 60's and 70's, but fell flat in the 80's. ABC didn't have 1 good show in the 50's and 60's, but became the number 1 network in the late 70's, and had great shows all throughout the 80's and 90's. NBC really didn't have a good moment until the 80's, wnen The Cosby Show came along, and stayed popular until just a few years ago.

I love "Designing Women", especially epsiodes where Julia went off. I didn't like "Murphy Brown" at all during it's initial run, but fell in love with it when it aired on Nick at Nite (that was still after several months of avoiding the show at all costs on N@N)

I think my infatuation with Designing Women came from the fact that the show was set in my hometown (Atlanta), and I enjoyed watching Dixie on "Diff'rent Strokes" and followed her to that show.

Yeah, but I always think of it as more of a 90's show. Plus, that's when the show really became popular. If we're saying CBS 80's sitcoms were a bust, then Murphy Brown shouldn't be the one to blame :D

I agree with you, although at times I liked Murphy Brown Niles was funny when he was whining.

I did watch some dramas on CBS. Dallas, Knots Landing, Simon and Simon but the only sitcoms I watched in the mid to late 80s were Newhart and Kate & Allie and I didn't watch them every week.

The only truly good shows on the list would be Designing Women and Newhart. I loved Newhart! :)

Kate and Allie seemed like the idea came from Laverne and Shirley

Me, too!! Remember when Kirk kept fainting at his own wedding right after the preacher said, "dearly beloved"? After that episode, I truly knew what is was like to :rofl: at a show!! Priceless!!

I'd take 9th year, but 7th year is a bit too early don't you think. Sitcoms are allowed to cross decades. A Different World is a perfect example. I wouldn't even call Roseanne exclusively 90s.

What you have to realize is that CBS comedies in the 80s were targeted for older audiences. So, if you were young in the 80s, it was easier for you to watch NBC and ABC comedies. CBS was more successful with dramas back then. Kate and Allie, My Sister Sam, and Charles In Charge were few sitcoms that targeted young audiences. The latter two didn't stick around on the network long. I think CBS's best sitcoms they had in the 80s, are the ones that didn't last like Charlie & Company, Melba, Together We Stand/Nothing Is Easy, Live In, Better Days, Everything's Relative. They did have a lot of crappy ones like, The Van Dyke Show, Annie MCGuire, First Impressions, Lenny, Coming Of Age, Doctor Doctor, Eisenhower and Lutz, Heartland, I couldn't believe they were airing crap like that.
