View Full Version : New Gong Show
EighteenMinutes 06-24-2008, 05:05 PM Maybe this was posted long ago and I completely missed it...
If not, what do you all think of Comedy Central bringing back the Gong Show?

Sterling Holobyte 06-24-2008, 05:15 PM What do I think? I think the entertainment industry lost their creativity decades ago. Either that or they just are too lazy to think up anything new.
As for the "new" Gong Show specifically, I think it will mostly be just a lot raunchier than the original; trying for shock value. Another sign of that laziness.
robyrob 06-24-2008, 05:21 PM well, I for one can't wait to see this.
even if it sucks, maybe even BECAUSE it will suck.

Well said. I couldn't agree more.
I was almost disappointed to see an advertisement for this show the other day. There are certain things that just cannot be copied successfully and the Gong Show is one of those things.
MrCleveland 06-25-2008, 03:01 PM It's better than "American Idol".
BarneyFife 06-25-2008, 03:07 PM I liked the old Gong show, but don't know if it will go over well in this day and time.
Scoobiedoo30 06-26-2008, 01:51 PM I used to watched The Gone Show on GSN at 9:30 pm Central Time
70s show watcher 06-27-2008, 03:17 AM i dont think it will work i loved the old one but the reason it worked was because of the creative minds of chuck barris and his staff and the fact that what was funny in 1976 will seem old hat today esp with all the other talent or lack therof shows on tv these days they just need to leave this classic show alone
EighteenMinutes 07-01-2008, 05:38 PM it worked was because of the creative minds of chuck barris...
Nice. Even better said.
I know Dave Attell is a screwball himself, but nothing will ever match the blurry eyes of Chuck Barris.
70s show watcher 07-02-2008, 02:22 AM Nice. Even better said.
I know Dave Attell is a screwball himself, but nothing will ever match the blurry eyes of Chuck Barris.thanks for the complment i do have to say one thing the the new show might have going for it besides dave attell is the fact that its isnt going to be any worse than extereme gong from a few years back or esp that awful 1988 verison with don bleu
EighteenMinutes 07-17-2008, 10:10 PM Ten minutes into the first episode and I'll go ahead and say it now...
...this sucks.
TVFactFan 07-18-2008, 12:22 AM I think next thursday a guy is going to have 10 women stand on him at one time-lol
Mikado 07-18-2008, 02:00 AM I can't see it working without Chuck Barris hosting.....no one else could ever pull it off (Much the way Let's Make a Deal tanked after Monty Hall retired)
howilu 07-18-2008, 10:31 AM Even though there were a number of unusual acts, including the musical water player, it was a lot raunchier than the original and I definitely gong Comedy Central's attempt to revive The Gong Show. Only one act was gonged in the opener.
EighteenMinutes 07-18-2008, 11:03 AM I knew as soon as I realized Andy Dick was a judge that the show was doomed. Shocking television is only good when it's unintentional. It seemed to me like everyone on the show last night was told ahead of time to try and be as "crazy and shocking" as possible. Did anyone catch Navaro with his tongue down that chick's throat during the credits.
"Intentionally shocking" is synonymous with scripted as far as I'm concerned....and scripted is one thing the Gong Show should not be.
EighteenMinutes 08-04-2008, 12:03 AM It took three weeks...but I've quit watching this feeble attempt at bringing back the Gong Show.
What a waste of 30 minutes of television.
Chelsea 08-04-2008, 12:11 AM Dave Attell does a surprisingly decent job as host. Really, he does. The problem is pretty much everything around him is terrible.
The reason The Gong Show worked in the 70s was because...it was the 70s. It just doesn't work anymore. It didn't work in the late 80s, it didn't work in the late 90s, and it sure doesn't work now.

It seems, though, that he's a little tighter than usual...almost scripted to a fault. Dave Attell's a funny guy who's making the most of a train wreck. For anyone who's enjoying this mess, do so while you can. No way is this show going to last.
