what factors do you take into consideration in relation to your favourite tv show? or in other words, when you are a fan of a particular show, what makes you want to sustain an interest in it and for you to keep watching it until the very end?
i'd use two of my favourite tv show types to explain my reasons why i'd enjoy that particular programme.
firstly, the sitcom:
interesting characters and plot
great storylines or episodes
it has to be funny or that it successfully comes up with ways that try to make me laugh and put a smile on my face, both in terms of physical and verbal comedy
the situations have to be of interest to myself
secondly, cartoons:
great animation and character design
good gags and jokes in humourous cartoons
the characters are identifiable- not in terms of one relating to them but that that they have a cross over appeal and interest
the characters have to be interesting
the stories/narratives are varied and make us want to keep watching the show

I enjoy Game Shows for:
- Gameplay: how well is the gameplay? Is it simple? Is it entertaining?
- Some shows for the cast and crew: How well do they hold up with their performance?
- Execution: how well does this show do once it's executed on the big screen? Does the gameplay keep you glued long enough for you to come back for more?
- The set and/or theme song: Do the set and/or theme song convey a nice atmosphere for the show?

I enjoy a lot of dramas and sitcoms:
Dramas
- has some action and not always a happy ending
- suspense
- character build ups, wanting to see how the character can handle to stress of the episode
Sitcoms
- Character relationships/involvement with each other have to be believable
- Someone that keeps me laughing
- New plots and jokes not the same episodes recycled

For a sitcom, it has to be funny, not to realistic, original, creative-plots, and the characters have to be colorful and easy to relate to.

Sitcoms:
For consistency in the stories and/or characters
How well-developed is the show
And can I relate to the characters?

Great writing and acting, strong chemistry among the actors/characters, interesting plotlines, and humor that isn't too nasty or vulgar are all important factors for me in deciding whether or not I will continue watching a show.
The biggest factor for me is the presence of likable characters. I've lost interest in quite a few shows that had great writing, but unlikable characters. Seinfeld is one example. I'll agree it's a well-written show, but I find the characters to be nasty and self-absorbed.
