View Full Version : Sorry, Wrong Number
Zoneboy 06-21-2008, 02:50 AM We all get wrong numbers but does anyone have a number that people are constantly confusing with someone else or even worse a place of business?
My number is one digit off from the local office of a major insurance provider. I get calls for this agent practically everyday. I'm never rude to the person calling but I've dealt with some unfriendly ones.
This one lady who I very nicely told had the wrong number was very adamant that she was right and then told me that she had obtained the number from directory assistance and she gave me the number that was given to her. I told her that was my number and that it has been for 25 years. I gave her the correct number and she called back later to apologize.
I called directory assistance to obtain the number for the insurance agent and sure enough I was given my own number and when I told the operator about the error, She said I was mistaken. It took awhile but the issue was finally corrected.
The worst case scenario though happened when this guy called and got my answering machine. He thought he was calling the agent and wanted to transfer the insurance from one car to another. He left all the info including the vehicle identification numbers said thank you and goodbye.
I tried calling the man back after hearing the message but no luck so I had to call the agent and explain what happened. I didn't want the guy to be without insurance and if I hadn't called, It never would've been transferred.
Anyone ever have the same problem?
InspectorExstead 06-21-2008, 03:30 AM ay. that's annoying. one of my friend's number is similar to a hotel in a different state, but i don't know how they end up getting her number when the area code is way off. but she'll get a call once a month asking if it's that hotel.
i've had people call me and leave me voicemails about important stuff. they hear me talk and say my name in my message, yet they'll still leave voicemails about a job interview, getting coffee or applying for a job. weird.
dawsongirl 06-21-2008, 03:45 AM I've had this one girl call my cell phone several times looking for, I don't know, a friend or something (her messages are completely incoherent). She's called at least 5 timesm and yet she never seems to wonder why this friend never calls her back?
Before that, it was some Spanish-speaking people who called for months. ohno:
When we moved a few years ago, we had to get a new number. For the next 2-3 years, we'd get calls from schools and businesses looking for "Melissa", and some couldn't understand why she wasn't there. That was obnoxious.
Hollow 06-21-2008, 04:24 AM i've been getting a lot of calls from people trying to reach someone else. it's getting annoying.
80sTrivia 06-21-2008, 06:46 AM My last telephone number was similar to the local pizza joint's number, but with the last two digits inverted, so I used to receive calls from people wondering where their pizza was all the time!
catlover79 06-21-2008, 11:29 AM My family's home number was one digit away from a bank, which was just about half a mile away. Then the bank closed. After that, our number was one digit off from Hooters.
Courtnee 06-21-2008, 12:29 PM People call my cell phone all the time asking for Ebony.
Obviously not me. *points to pale skin*
When I was still living at home our phone # was one digit off form the management office of an apartment complex not too far away, so occasionally we would get calls about apartment type stuff, my sink is broken, heat is off, etc.
Usually, I would calmly tell them they had the wrong #, and all would be fine.
One time this really angry guy called, cursing like mad that we haven't fixed his toilet yet, very violent too.
I told him we'd send someone right over.
;)
Jude The Obscure 06-21-2008, 01:41 PM Our home number is apparently close enough to the numbers of--the sherriff's dept, a lawyer, the city marshal, and a hair salon.
Funny thing is.........the phone company told us this number was totally BRAND new when they assigned it to us

ZeldaGilroy 06-21-2008, 02:05 PM The phone book mistakenly printed the number for the local turnpike authority with my home telephone number. I get calls EVERYDAY for them. People get irritated when they find out they have the wrong number, so I thought I'd call information and get the right one so I could give it out to all the callers. Guess what number they gave me...mine! UGH! I don't know how to fix this. I guess I'll have to march myself into the offices at the turnpike and demand they correct the problem. Hopefully they will work with me, it's not like they'll be too busy answering phones or anything. I often wonder if they've noticed that no one calls them???

BarneyFife 06-21-2008, 10:29 PM Several years ago I had this woman calling me thinking I was her Doctor. She called at least once a week and I kept telling her she had the wrong number. I guess she finally found the right number because the calls stopped coming after a month or so. Dr. Fuller, hmm, It has a good ring to It anyways.
Hollow 06-21-2008, 11:03 PM *singing* Ebony and ivory...
 one of my co-workers sings that song loudly and obnoxiously while we're working. he says his code name is ebony and mine is ivory (he's black and i'm white). strange guy.
robyrob 06-21-2008, 11:59 PM we get a lot of calls for some doctor's office, apparently he has a lot of elderly patients, and they don't often understand when i try to explain to them why I can't perform a checkup (or some far worse procedure) on them.
