View Full Version : I may be a non-driver forever.
MrCleveland 06-20-2008, 01:18 PM I tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried, (that's 6 tries with a Learners Permit) but still, I failed. I have this temp packet for November, but the way things are going since I'm in a program where they help the disabled, I'll get my Drivers License when Cleveland wins a Championship.
This also means...
1-I live in the city.
2-I might as well forget about dating.
3-I rent.
4-I cut myself off of my own family.
5-I change my name.
catlover79 06-20-2008, 01:52 PM Hey, I didn't get my driver's license until I was 25 - and after failing the road test 3 times!! If I can do it, so can you.
Furienna 06-20-2008, 07:52 PM I haven't got a driver's license either. I'm too affraid to cause accidents, if I get behind a wheel. :(
Nighthawk76 06-20-2008, 11:51 PM Driving actually gets really old after awhile. Everyone who has posted in this thread either doesn't drive or hasn't been driving that long. I've been driving since 1994 and after all these years, I can honestly say that driving isn't all that it is cracked up to be. Over the last decade traffic here in Illinois has become really, really bad...especially during the rush hour. Also, too many drivers on the road are not safe drivers...they have their minds on everything but the road.
Max Whittaker 06-21-2008, 12:02 AM The only good thing about driving is the independence.
The rest is only barely worth it; the expense, the aggravation, the stress, the possibility of killing someone....
Not fun...
If a girl only likes you because you have a car and can drive, I'd suggest looking somewhere higher on the gene pool... There are guys who never drive, will never drive, for any number of reasons, and they have very lovely ladies after them.
You're only as limited as you chose to be.
BarneyFife 06-21-2008, 12:15 AM Never ever give up on anything.
Chelsea 06-21-2008, 12:30 AM OK, first thing's first? Which are you failing, the written test or the road/driving portion of the test? I'm not sure how Ohio does their tests, and I couldn't tell from your post exactly what you failed?
If you're failing the driving portion of the test, is there a particular portion of the test that you keep failing? When I failed my driving test on my first attempt it was because I absolutely was terrible at parallel parking. Is there some specific aspect that's tripping you up?
And if you're stuck at the written test - again, is there some specific question or questions you can't seem to get right? I had trouble figuring out the meaning behind Yield signs for example. (which if anyone's ever in a car with me - this explains my reluctance to slow at those). Are there certain questions that are tripping you up?
Six tries at it is an awfully high number of misses - but I certainly admire your persistence and refusal to give up. Take the opportunity to figure out what you're not getting, and work on that. I'm sure any of us will help with advice if we can.
PunkyP0WER 06-21-2008, 12:39 AM i can't stand driving. i try not to drive if i don't have to. unfortunately i work 6 days a week and the busline is unavailable in my town so its not possible. i work 3rd shift so the drive there isn't too bad but on the way home i hit morning gridlock and its a nightmare. because i'm not in a hurry to go anywhere but home i do the state minimum of 45mph which aggravates all the speed demons who try to bully me into going faster by tailgating me. same people who complain on the evening news about the cost of gas but then waste more money by speeding. if they headed out a few minutes earlier they wouldn't be in such a hury and could conserve more gas. anyway, you'll get your license sooner than you think. don't worry you have the whole rest of your life to drive, believe me
PunkyP0WER 06-21-2008, 12:42 AM i think you're onto something seth. i failedmy first time on the driving portion because i had difficulty with backing up into spaces. so thats all my dad and i did was back into spaces over and over and over. and i passed the test on my second try
PunkyP0WER 06-21-2008, 12:46 AM a little o/t: hey family ties forver, do you remember jennifer practicing driving with her dad in the kitchen on family ties? they arranged the chairs to look like the inside of the car and the dad kept screaming over invisible obstacles in the road. lmao i just watched it on youtube

Same here. I hit the pole in parallel parking.
Since the test I really haven't had to employ the maneuver, so I don't think I'd manage it again if I needed to.

me neither, i only mastered it for the test and never used it gain.
HuntingtonM15 06-21-2008, 02:08 AM I've only been driving (with a license) for 5 years, and the majority of the time I can't stand it. Other drivers are so obnoxious and it just gets old really fast.
InspectorExstead 06-21-2008, 03:34 AM there is nothing wrong with not having your license yet. just keep taking the test until you pass it. you can do it!
but really though, like all the other drivers on this thread said, driving gets old...really fast.
at first, it's wonderful & exciting. FREEDOM! and then freedom just disappears and becomes full of annoying responsibilities. running errands for the parents, dealing with stupid drivers, or worse...drunk drivers, paying for gas (you might as well just pee out money because it'll disappear so quickly), having friends ask you for rides all the time, etc.
driving is fun, but it also sucks at the same time. either way, not having your license is not something that should make you look down on yourself. you have plenty of time to get a license.
Furienna 06-21-2008, 05:41 AM Unfortuneately, I live out in the countryside. I have six miles to town, and I even have two miles to the closest bus stop. It's a good thing to have a car out here. I always need rides from my dad or my sister or my brother. My mum doesn't have a license either though, which actually makes me feel like a little bit less of a failure. If I only had lived six miles outside a big city like Stockholm instead of six miles outside the little town of Örnsköldsvik, I wouldn't even think of having to drive. Because big cities have better public transportations than small towns, since there are more buses, and maybe even street-cars. Stockholm even has a subway system! More public transportations would have been so great for me! And really now, if I only lived closer to a bus stop, I wouldn't think about it either. But now, it's a little bit difficult.
waichingliu81 06-21-2008, 07:40 AM don't beat yourself up over this. i can't drive and i have no intention in doing so. public transport is crap and expensive in london- and yet with cars, you have to pay for petrol (that's gas btw), car tax, road tax, the congestion charge etc. the congestion charge sucks because if you drive into the centre of london you have to pay £8 every time you enter by car. iinstead, i take the bus or walk although i'd like to get a bike to peddle around town
catlover79 06-21-2008, 11:25 AM Every time I failed the road test, it was because I hit a stupid cone. I was just using the mirrors. Then I asked the person at the DMV giving me the test if I could roll down my window and look all the way out - going extremely slow, of course. She said I could, and it worked! I tell kids going for their licenses to do it that way, and they take the advice to heart.
I haven't seen that Family Ties episode mentioned here, but it sounds hilarious. I'll have to go on youtube later and check it out.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Michael.
Wait a second. You said that you've been "driving (with a license) for 5 years". How long were you driving without a license? ;)

That would not work here in Illinois, since here our road test is on the actual road. There are no cones.

Ha, never move to Southern California...I agree with Mike, driving can be a pain, especially if there is a lot of traffic, which, is a daily occurrence in where I live..

 Just meaning that I only had a permit before then.

Oh god....PEOPLE ON CELL PHONES. They should just have a huge sign on their car that says DANGEROUS, IDIOT DRIVER. Same goes for the people who eat, have dogs on their laps, and read something while driving.
I love driving, but there are a lot of reasons to just let someone else do it. Driving is expensive and in the city, can be very frustrating.
Furienna 06-23-2008, 02:11 AM Reading something while driving sounded like the most stupid thing out of those though. I mean, you might know still see the road, if you're on your cell phone, if you're eating, or if you have your dog in your lap. But reading and driving?

Don't you just want to beat those people over the head with a blunt object?? I go 65 on the interstate because I'm trying to get good gas mileage, so I have these worthless morons on my bumper all the time. Go around!!! Or better yet...don't go 80. ohno:

I didn't have to take a driving test fortunately, because I can't parallel park to save my soul. Last time I tried I got laughed at.

I've seen people reading newspapers and books while driving.

Tell me about it! It's like, there IS another lane of traffic, people.

I agree about the cell phones, the Police should give tickets to who ever drives while talking on the phone. It's so dangerous!

I never even had to parallel park for my test, which is good. I still have no idea how to do it.
