I guess I haven't heard, or taken notice of this expression. However...one expression I hear a lot which bugs the s%^& out of me is "Are you serious?". I hear it frequently as a junior high teacher. The conversation goes something like this:
Teacher (Me): Take out your homework, please?
Student: (the new kid who moved from Bakersfield--Let's call her Tanya; no, Tania; ah, no Tanyya, er, uh no, that's not it, Taniya, Tan... ), says: We had homework??
Me: Yes.
Tanya: Are you serious!??
Me: (To myself) [Of course I'm serious, or why would I have asked you to take it out?]

If I could put on my "Cliff Clavin" hat for a few moments, I think that many of these expressions originate(d) in the San Fernando (Valley), so-called Valley Girl dialect, and that they become universally understood all over the US, due to the entertainment industry. Just a theory and observation.
