Remember them? :lol: It all started in 1981 when a session group from Holland made a 12" single (to combat a similar bootleg release)of mostly Beatles songs plus snippets of "Sugar Sugar" and "Venus" thrown in. The difference is the Stars On 45 version was performed by sound-alike vocalists, who actually did each and every song, which was then edited down into this medley. Capping off the medley (and breaking it into segments) was a chorus called "Stars on 45", which was reminding people to remember those famous Beatles songs. The song went to #1 in many countries, including the US. The success lead to many others trying their hand at varying degress of success, their own medleys. So45 released a second Beatles medley, The Beatles themselves did a Movie Medley, The Beach Boys, the Hollies, etc. There were takes on classical music and big band tunes, each set to a thumping disco beat. We can probably list all those we can remember here. The success of So45 inspired a spinoff group called The Star Sisters who had a big European hit with an Andrew Sisters medley.

The Spinners went medley-crazy in the early 80s: "Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl", "Cupid/I've Loved You for a Long Time", and "Yesterday Once More/Nothing Remains the Same".

You haven't heard Stars since it debuted? OMG, that is a long time. Do you really like that song a lot?

I remember hearing the Spinners songs when they were released and hearing the deejays sometimes refer to the songs as being a medley and I wondered why. To me a medley is when a song has two distinct songs in one. And I mean a very DISTINCT difference.

Another one I have heard as being considered a medley is Diana Ross' song, "Love Hangover." It starts out a very slow song and then changes into a fast dance tune. I don't consider that a medley (for those who do).

Because of Stars, I've come to appreciate the music of The Beatles, The Stones, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder and ABBA even more than I did before.

That group is no more than a party cover band! At least they should call themselves "Stars on 45 Too" or something innocuous. Trying to pass themselves as the original Dutch hitmakers is really really scuzzy. Too bad I don't have a way to contact Jaap Eggermont and let him know of this fraudlent act.

That is why JS can do it, because if ONE original member is in the group, it can be legally done. I know we have some law here in California that was enacted due to SHA NA NA member, Jon Bowzer Bauman, who was tired of seeing oldie acts being billed or at least giving the impression they were the ORIGINAL GROUP. Legislation was enacted that any group that performs (at least here in California as far as I know) has to have at least ONE ORIGINAL MEMBER in the group in order for the group to be billed under a certain name. That is why we will see many oldie groups being billed such as RON TYSON'S TEMPTATIONS. Ron Tyson is not an original member of the group, but he did perform with them at one time, probably in the mid 70's.

I always thought a group could copyright the name so that no one could do that.

I am familiar with this group; they came out when I was nine years old, and it was a few years before I heard any songs by them. I might have heard their songs in 1981, but I probably thought they were the originals.

Sometimes I have been so fortunate as to hear one of their songs on a retro "American Top 40" with Casey Kasem. One local station plays a retro "AT40" every Saturday morning from 6-10, so if they highlight 1981 or 1982 that day, I'm awake, and it's in the countdown for the targeted day, I get my "Stars on 45" fix.

Of note, Hooked on Swing was from Larry Elgart and his Manhattan Swing Orchestra in 1982. It hit #31 on the Billboard charts. I heard it three years ago on a radio station while driving to Indiana via country roads--nice touch! :cool:

I was aware of Hooked on Swing being by Larry Elgart--who later changed his orchestra's name from "Manhattan Swing" to "Hooked On Swing"

I was also aware of the Dutch/German fansite, but didn't quite remember the url. It's a great tribute to the group!

Remember the Ritchie Family (or was it Richie) who did a medley of disco songs, including I LOVE MUSIC, T.S.O.P. (the Soul Train theme), TANGERINE, etc?

Nope never heard it before--interesting how the idea was there but never got widespread attention until you know who exploded on the scene :lol:
