why was this guy nicknamed "Boner" in the show?

His last name was Stabbone, so, my theory is it is just a varriation of the last name.

It would have been better for him to have been called "Bone".

You'd think it would have been censored out, considering the network was ABC, but I guess it was because it was never meant to be anything "dirty," although we all know the truth ;)

Yep, it's still very much known as that today..., I always wondered how they got away with it too...or even how the cast could keep a straight face. :lol:

What is he doing now

A few years back he played the Joker in the Batman Dead End fan film.

They actually addressed the origin of Boner's nickname on the show. Mike and Richard met at the bus stop on their way to their first day of school. Mike asked him what his name was and upon hearing the answer decided he didn't like the name Richard and he couldn't properly pronounce Stabbone. So he gave him the nickname Boner and it stuck. Of course at that age he couldn't have understood there was another connotation to the name. And I think it was on that basis that it got by the censors.(By the way, did you know that Andrew Koenig, who played Boner, was the son of Walter Koenig who played Ckekov on Star Trek?)

Television was full of sexual innuendos prior to the 90's. Now days with out any real censorship the writers can use dirty jokes all the time, which they do. That's why there's no art involved in it anymore. :(
