View Full Version : Ramen Noodles
Jude The Obscure 06-06-2008, 08:03 PM Yea, those things!
I remember it was sometime in the early '80s when we first discovered these. And they were like 10 cents a package--we were like "wow! a package of soup for 10 cents??" Bought a crapload of them and ate for days very cheaply!
We kept buying them throughout the years, esp when the budget got very very slim. And esp when we were sick and not up to eating much, ramen noodles to the rescue.
Of course, I have had to give them up(when diagnosed with high blood pressure) when I saw how much SODIUM was in these things--literally drinking hot salt water! And these packages state that this is a 2 serving meal-- 2 SERVINGS?!?!? Who makes a package and then splits it with someone? We always ate a package by ourselves in one sitting. Sheesh Louise! I like how some brands state "you can control the level of sodium by using less of the seasoning packet"--uhhhhm yea, but then have a bowl of very bland noodles in hot water :barf:
Ireneparalegal 06-06-2008, 09:09 PM  I have to be really in the mood to eat Ramen noodles.
The inventor of the Top Ramen products died sometime last year.
OH Nuts! 06-06-2008, 10:43 PM Yes they are yummy but mucho calories and sodium galore.
Zoneboy 06-06-2008, 11:25 PM Yea, those things!
I remember it was sometime in the early '80s when we first discovered these. And they were like 10 cents a package-
Last I looked they were still .10 cents a package around here. I think it's the only product in the store that hasn't had a price increase in 20 years or longer.
catlover79 06-07-2008, 12:00 AM My brother lives on Top Ramen noodles. I can't stomach them (neither can our mom), but to each his own.
I love Ramen Noodles, but I don't eat them too often.
ThomasE 06-07-2008, 01:47 AM My fave is Hot and Spicy. I have not been eating them as much. In fact, I eat them sporadically.
InspectorExstead 06-07-2008, 02:51 AM i loooove cup of noodles. i used to take them to work with me last year & have them on those lunch breaks when i was just too tired to get something to eat. they're delicious, but yep...lots of sodium. and i usually spend maybe 30 or 40 cents for one of them.
my friends who live in apartments on campus live off of these though. haha.
*ClassicPinUp* 06-07-2008, 05:21 AM I don't eat them very often but when I do...I enjoy every last unhealthy bite! I only like the plain chicken flavor.
And you can't beat the price; Publix sells them - 10 for a $1!
Now why can't fruits and veggies be priced liked that!
80sTrivia 06-07-2008, 07:19 AM Those noodles helped get me through my college years, that's for sure!
PZelda 06-07-2008, 08:33 AM I've never been gaga over ramen. However, I discovered recently that I don't mind Asian food in a box (same idea as ramen, but more expensive because they come with their own tray). It's gotta be a pasta other than ramen, though. Like spaghetti. Mmmm... Oops, I better watch my budget AND sodium levels.
Jude The Obscure 06-07-2008, 09:08 AM I've heard people esp college studets refer to Ramen Noodles as Purina People Chow!
I loved the different varieties like chili chicken caliente or tomato. Was never a big fan of pork or beef. And to gross you all out--I loved the chicken variety with a dollop of peanut butter mixed in.
OH Nuts! 06-07-2008, 10:06 AM I've heard people esp college studets refer to Ramen Noodles as Purina People Chow!

Doesn't sound gross at all. Sounds kind of Thai like. Love peanuts, peanut butter, Thai peanut dressing etc.
The only thing gross abt it all are the calories, carbs & sodium. I have a voracius appetite and could easily eat 500-600 cals of peanut butter (with or without jelly) but those days are over. But once I get down to my right weight I can start having peanuts and peanut butter as one of my fats to maintain. I am so looking forward to that day! that legume!
Oh yes, how could I forget, love those noodles too & the soup. But again, many carbs, cals & sodium. Maybe as a treat every now and then I can buy a pack and have a third of it at a time. Portion control, that sort of thing.
Jude The Obscure 06-07-2008, 10:23 AM See my problem is just that--too hard to portion control ramen noodles for my hunger, so i just avoid it. I know there will never be a good low sodium alternative to ramen, so I will have to learn to live without it :(
As for peanut butter-I treat myself to Peter Pan No Sugar Added and am willing to try the SoyButter I saw in a grocery store.
waichingliu81 06-07-2008, 12:43 PM i actually have a bowl of noodles for breakfast, but its not from ramen. and even though they are an asian thing, ramen noodles tend to be from japan, although many asians like chinese and korean eat them as well. as for my favourite flavour of noodles i like prawn, chicken, crab and mushroom

I found something called Better'n Peanut Butter that has 85% less fat and 40% less calories. Not as good as real butter (it tastes sweeter) but its not bad. Made by Wonder Natural foods www.betternpeanutbutter.com
Jude The Obscure 06-07-2008, 04:16 PM Thanks for the tip, Rich. nearest store is however over 30 miles from my house. But I do see you can buy it online as well, so I may give it a whirl! (Sold only by cases--yikes!)
(BTW, do you ever check your private messages, Rich?)
The Great One 06-07-2008, 04:44 PM I used to eat Ramen noodles by the truck load when I was younger and on a tight budget.

Only by the case? It's pretty good BUT NOT THAT GOOD
(not as often as I should)
YoliUSA 06-07-2008, 06:11 PM Yes they are yummy but mucho calories and sodium galore.
 very true. Actually all of the instant foods (Ramen Noodles, Easy Mac, Campbell's Soups, Chef Boyardee) contain TONS of sodium. I still eat them from time to time, but in smaller portions.
coffield3 06-07-2008, 07:00 PM I think our version (in the uk) of Ramen noodles are called Super noodles. I rarely eat them, I have to be in the right mood.

Stormtracker TF 06-07-2008, 07:20 PM I liked them for a really short time years ago, but now I really don't like them at all. I never eat them.
OH Nuts! 06-07-2008, 10:16 PM I liked them for a really short time years ago, but now I really don't like them at all. I never eat them.
God how I wished that were true for me...I'd be so much better off (but when I get to the half way pt in my weight loss I'll buy a pick and split the serving into 3 smaller ones
InspectorExstead 06-08-2008, 06:23 AM this thread is making me crave one of these! my favorite is the chicken flavor. mmm.
OH Nuts! 06-08-2008, 12:29 PM me too I wanna chix & mushroom(but my low sodium Progresso soup wasn't bad) - IT's JUST that I them darn noodles!
Jude The Obscure 08-07-2008, 03:24 PM Bumping up...
Well I have gone back to eating one pack a week--since my blood pressure has been reasonably under control for awhile now and secondly, for the fact that it is a very cheap lunch and with gas prices, etc. I can't afford to eat out on my lunch hour too often. So I just come home and fix this quickly. I do admit I miss them  And lately, with me not being that all hungry (sometimes downright nauseous), I find the broth soothing.
Hollow 08-07-2008, 05:54 PM loves ramen.
spunkygirl 08-07-2008, 06:34 PM I LOVE the chicken flavored ramen noodles
I can get them for about 8 for a dollar, sometimes 5 or 6 for a dollar, depends on what store I buy them at
Jude The Obscure 08-07-2008, 06:39 PM getting ready to sit down to a bowl now....it's not been a good day for me, stomach wise. Meds are really affecting me today. So I'm gonna enjoy my Chicken Picante flavor. Need to buy some more though, down to just 2 packs :)
Jude The Obscure 08-08-2008, 02:00 PM oh yea, I forgot to add about a favorite flavor of mine was tomato! Can't find it nowadays......there used to be like 4-5 different brands. Now you're lucky if you can find Nissin or Top Ramen plus the store brand.
ThomasE 08-08-2008, 02:12 PM Jude, you take it easy with the noodles. LOL. I love them but am afraid to eat them because of all the sodium. LOL. Sorry that I have been MIA. I have not had computer service for five weeks and just got it fixed this morning with Dell. I am on the phone with them now being transferred back and forth trying to get them to remove a charge that they got me twice for.
Jude The Obscure 08-08-2008, 02:15 PM Oh don't worry, Thomas.....They are not a part of my everyday diet. :)
And welcome back, buddy......no wonder S.O. has been so quiet

.
LOL. It is has been quiet? Wow! I could use some hot n' spicy just about now. Thanks for the warm welcome back Jude.
PunkyP0WER 08-08-2008, 09:34 PM beef and chicken are my favs. i've been known on occasion to make a spaghetti dinner for one out of them too.
Janice 08-09-2008, 01:53 AM Great food for college students. Good and cheap. There's got to be more MSG in those than I don't know what, lol. Like Kramer says when ordering Chinese food, "Extra MSG."
OH Nuts! 08-09-2008, 01:55 AM Sigh...NOW I'm getting a real craving for them....oh well...if I do 1/2 a pack that won't be so bad (thankfully my sodium is OK so its just the cals & carbs I have to watch)
Brieannas21 08-09-2008, 02:35 AM My husband loves those noodles, I can't stand them. But he boils his noodles and then he cracks an egg in with the boiling noodles and he had green onions. GROSS LOL
I usually drain off the water and then mix in the seasoning packet to make
it a dry noodle dish. I usually eat two packets of Ramen Noodles.

thats how i eat them too with the water drained.
although that orbit commercial with the guy mixing his ramen noodles with scissors his roommate clipped his nosehairs with has made me lose my appetite for it.

They sound good this way too. They sound good any which way. That's the problem, sigh. But my def. pref. is having them in a soup. This way it takes longer to eat them & I can enjoy them longer as they are not something I can have on a regular basis. ...they sure are tasty!!
waichingliu81 08-09-2008, 11:32 AM I usually drain off the water and then mix in the seasoning packet to make

hmm, interesting. i actually eat mines with the soup, although i never drink the browth because of the sodium and chemicals in the soap base
Jude The Obscure 08-09-2008, 07:56 PM I've actually drop in by dollops, beaten egg, to sometimes make a variation on egg drop soup. Yes, we've all discussed the health ramifications, but, sometimes the old budget just has to stretch so far....
As a cashier, I see this stuff selling by the ton, esp to people on food stamps or those with just pocket change. Not making a judgement, but I understand WHY it does sell for those reasons.
Mr.Burns 08-09-2008, 08:06 PM I love Ramen Noodles. There cheap and taste good. However I only have them sometimes due to the high level of sodium in them.
ThomasE 08-12-2008, 09:53 PM I usually drain off the water and then mix in the seasoning packet to make
it a dry noodle dish. I usually eat two packets of Ramen Noodles.
I eat mine dry as well. I stopped eating two packets because of the high sodium.
Jude The Obscure 08-12-2008, 10:20 PM Have to have mine as a soup--it's more filling to me that way. But I have had them without the broth a few times. Yea you need two packages that way to make it a filling meal--but also get rid of one of the seasoning packets. One packet stretches and has enough sodium as it is!
I prefer the Beef and Oriental flavors

That is true. I have not done it that way in a long time. I will do that again soon. Thanks Jude. BTW, Jude, while at the hospital this morning, I had my blood pressure checked. Thanksfully, I'm 127/71. :D
Jude The Obscure 08-13-2008, 10:30 AM I haven't had the Oriental flavor in a long time, so I don't quite remember how it tastes. I do like the Shrimp flavor now and then as well as Hot n Spicy.
Hey, Thomas, congrats! We have a home b/p monitor, so we check ours everyday. Mine, thankfully, remains under control--120/68 this morning. I have had instances of low pressure where the top number is in the 70s...so I've adjusted my meds to 1/2 a pill. It works better like that. A whole pill drops it too much too fast. I also hate the side effect of throat tickling and coughing--ugh.
ThomasE 08-13-2008, 10:59 AM Interesting. I did not realize that it could drop that low just like that. Thanks for info. All this talk is making me hungry. LOL.
Jude The Obscure 08-13-2008, 11:09 AM Yep--it is scary to realize what a med can do when not expected. here I was in 90 degree heat--weak and having the chills!!
ever notice how the noodles in the packages are different from the noodles in the "cup o ramen"s?
ThomasE 08-13-2008, 11:25 AM I did not notice. Maybe I should take notice. Interesting how educational this topic has become? LOL.

Courtnee 08-13-2008, 07:01 PM Apparently those things have a lot of saturated fat. Like 98% of the recomended daily intake. But I love them all the same! Esp the Chicken flavor with some hot sauce in it. And very soup-y. YUMMO!
I've never tried it with egg. Is it good? How would you go about making it that way?
Jude The Obscure 08-13-2008, 09:59 PM I love your response, Courtnee!!
and natch, since we are both from Louisiana--the Hot Sauce State! :D
take an egg in a bowl or big mixing cup and whip it good--make it beg for mercy!!--then while the water is boiling with the noodles, add the beaten egg to the water by small drops--you will see it form ribbons like you do in eggdrop soup (at Chinese food restaurants). Voila! :) Try it and let me know how like you it.
Maybe we need a Chit Chat-Recipes board

Oh snap! We ARE both from Louisiana! "How's your mom and them?"
What part of the state are you from?
And I'm really gonna have to try that. Sounds DELICIOUS.

I'm from Cajun Country, cher'! :D Specifically, Crowley, 25 miles west of Lafayette or 45 miles east of Lake Charles.
