Kate Nash has claimed that reviews of Scarlett Johansson's debut album were sexist.

The singer said she was disappointed by the "patronising cynicism" of reviewers who thought Johansson couldn't make a decent record because she is a good-looking woman.

Commenting on a specific review, Nash said: "It does my head in that he [the reviewer] had to bring it down such a sh***y level, cutting her down because he can roll his eyes and pass it off as nonsense because 'she's a pretty little girly girl from Hollywood who thinks she can have a go at dressing up like daddy'.

"Shouldn't we just stick to what we do best girls and smell nice? Sell ourselves short? And shut the f**k up? It's blatant sexism."

She added: "I know if I start talking about this I'm a 'dyke' and 'a man hater' and I'll be 'knocked off that pedestal missy' but these kinds of attitudes should be thought of as prehistoric.

"If you must attack at least attack fairly, don't be so petty. Point is, I hate arrogant sexist patronising t**ts, I'm really more into equality."

Johansson released her debut album Anywhere I Lay My Head last month.

Who is Kate Nash?

apparently some musician of whom i've never heard of myself. in fact, i don't follow the current music trend, as music today has gone down the crapper. i do agree though that she has a point somewhat. in that because she is famous in hollywood as an actress, people assume she is useless as a singer. i haven't heard the LP myself so i cannot really make a judgement of her vocal abilities

From what I have heard, Scarlett can sing. She was seriously considered to star in a revival of "Sound Of Music," so I guess she can carry a tune.

I never thought she was a good actress, so maybe she's a good singer.

I'm still a bit confused as to why she chose an album of Tom Waits covers for her debut.

I agree.

Tom Waits is an "interesting" choice.

Seriously, he is an aquired taste, to say the least.
