View Full Version : Cousin Myrtle/AuntEsther was annoying even on Diffrent Strokes-LOL
TVFactFan 06-04-2008, 07:37 PM All Lawanda Page did in this DS ep was drag her Sanford and Son character over to the Penthouse and had that same shaky neck character which made me go-"OH BOY-lo
Where was FRED G SANFORD when you needed him-loll
Ireneparalegal 06-04-2008, 07:40 PM She basically took that style to anything she did. If that is what she did best and that is what the producers wanted, who is to say otherwise? When she was on THE LOVE BOAT with Sherman Hemsley (another actor who basically does the same character) she was loud, rude and basically an Aunt Esther, except she was rich in the LB episode.

She was a one-dimensional character that's for sure-lol she also played the same character on Amen and Martin
Jude The Obscure 06-04-2008, 08:15 PM Whitman Mayo simply took his Grady character to DS, even though he was called Jethro B. Simpson. The guy even mentioned running a junkyard! How obvious can you get??

Yup he did, not as GOOFY as the Grady character but more like the chracter he played on his spinoff-"Grady"
MikeLutton 06-04-2008, 08:33 PM i would liked to see more sanford n son charactors guest star on there wonder what happen if redd foxx would guest starred as cousin mrytel campanion or something now that would been something
Brieannas21 06-04-2008, 09:04 PM She did the same thing on Amen also LOL. She didn't do the whole "GLORY" thing but it was the same Charatcher. Also on Martin she was calling people fish eyed fool

i would like to see if she appeared on any talk shows in the 70's or 80's so i can see her NORMAL side-lol

That was one of my favorite episodes of season 2! The funny part was how she kicked that rug and pretended to slip. It was funny because it was too obvious she was faking!
I will say this, Lawanda seemed more polished as an actress in this episode tham she was on Sanford and Son.
Ireneparalegal 06-05-2008, 07:20 PM She was a one-dimensional character that's for sure-lol she also played the same character on Amen and Martin
There are actors/actresses who will play different characters the same way. That is what producers want when they hire people like that. If they wanted a normal person, why look to hire someone like LaWanda Page? Just hire some black actress.

I'm just saying it's a shame she couldn't play anything else

It doesn't bother me and I am sure she was content with doing that. It paid well. :dollar:

It don't bother me either, I'm just pointing out that she wasn't able to play any other character. I like pointing stuff out, remember?-lol
GARFIELDKOOL 06-05-2008, 07:38 PM But you know what, if she went on and played a very different character from Aunt Esther, Aunt Esther fans like myself would be begging her to use her Esther mannerisms, so I think Lawanda page was meant to play Aunt Esther and nothing else.

Exactly.
If she was happy doing that, more power to her. Sherman has always done the same character (George, Deacon). There are some actors who get paid well for doing what they do best. LaWanda was a funny woman, not a serious actress. She became famous because of her funny antics. She didn't go to Julliard to become a serious actress.

She was a comedianne before S&S anyway.
TVFactFan 06-05-2008, 07:55 PM Deacon frye and George Jefferson were not similar characters

Before I forget, she came to my elementary school in 1983. I don't know what she was doing there. (I was 8 going on 9) Anyway, she looked nothing like she did on TV, she was at a desk passing out brochurs, and I remember her asking a student, "Did you get one?" She had the same esther type voice, but it was calm and normal. That was my only recoglection of her in person.
GARFIELDKOOL 06-05-2008, 07:58 PM Deacon frye and George Jefferson were not similar characters
Loud and full of scemes, I would say so.
Ireneparalegal 06-05-2008, 08:00 PM Deacon frye and George Jefferson were not similar characters
Um, yeah they were.
TVFactFan 06-05-2008, 08:01 PM Loud and full of scemes, I would say so.
George Jefferson was
immature
not intelligent
shallow
unpleasant
loud
snobbish
prejudice
closeminded
I don't think that was Deacon Frye

The way he portrayed the character, not the same character flaws. And Deacon was loud and boisterous. He was not playing him in a serious manner.
TVFactFan 06-05-2008, 08:02 PM Um, yeah they were.
both were fathers and good dancers, that's it
Ireneparalegal 06-05-2008, 08:04 PM both were fathers and good dancers, that's it
And loud and boisterous. And they both cared abt money. The way he played the Deacon is no different than how he played George. Different characters, same style.

Deacon was Mature, Pleasant, and I don't remember him being loud unless i need ear surgery
Ireneparalegal 06-05-2008, 08:06 PM Deacon was Mature, Pleasant, and I don't remember him being loud unless i need ear surgery
He was loud. He had his moments. That is why his daughter Thelma was the same way.
ThomasE 06-07-2008, 12:48 AM He was loud. He had his moments. That is why his daughter Thelma was the same way.
She sure was:
Thelma: Daaaadyyy! Daaaadyyy!
The only difference between them was that Deacon was a little more tamed than the George Jefferson of the 70's. 80's George and Deacon were almost the same people.

It was as if the Deacon was the George character but older, wiser and more mature.
Jude The Obscure 06-07-2008, 09:38 AM I did enjoy LaWanda Page's Church's Chicken TV commercials--they were funny!

Yes he did, especially when he was showing off or if he had proven someone wrong.
88survivor 06-07-2008, 03:14 PM LaWanda Page also played an sexualized old woman that thought she was hot stuff on Family Matters. That's something you don't want to see, though. Carl's reaction is funny, though.
TVFactFan 06-07-2008, 07:58 PM i have a appearance by lawanda page on the richard pryor show in 1977 and he was looking at her like-"THIS B*TCH IS CRAZY!"
LOL

LaWanda Page played the church lady who kept saying "Heeeaaaal". She also used the term "sucka" didn't she? Sol, do you have the original broadcast?

I wish-lol
LaWanda Page was with all due respect, wonderful on Sanford & Son but was really terrible on everything else where she wasn't essentially Esther. On Diff'rent Strokes, her delivery was so insincere that when the twist comes at the end of the episode, suggesting she was going to fess up to her deception, you think she's lying again.

magellan333 11-27-2016, 05:17 PM Lawanda Page was never an actress prior to Sanford and Son. As a matter of fact, she was almost cut from the cast due to not performing well. Reed Foxx was an old friend and lobbied for the producers to keep her on long enough for him to work with her to improve her performance. What followed was an iconic 70s sitcom character. She found what worked and milked it the rest of her career. I don't blame her one bit.
tlc38tlc38 11-27-2016, 07:19 PM Aunt Ester is really the reason I like Sanford and Son. To me, she made the show.

Yeah. Exactly. I never saw the episode of DS that she was on but I would like to. What one is it?

TMC posted the entire episode at post #39 above.

Wawwie 11-27-2016, 11:04 PM I love the Sanford And Son episode where we find out that Ester is BB King's long lost love!
