View Full Version : Anybody Ever Watch "That 80's Show"?
JamesG 06-02-2008, 02:22 PM That 80's Show was the unofficial spin-off of That 70's Show. It's unofficial because characters and plots of both shows never related to each other, but it was created by the same producers.
It failed to gain audience attention and only aired for 13 episodes on FOX. I personally watched a couple of episodes of it myself and it didn't interest me.
Did you get to watch it when it aired?
MPKidder 07-21-2008, 11:13 AM I was born in the mid 70s but I was an 80s child (I LOVED THE 80S!) and I did check out this show when it was on FOX. It was pretty good and I still have two episodes on my TiVo (original airings). I saw most of the episodes. I also obtained the show on DVD (not the best quality but at least I could see them again). Wish a real company would put them on DVD.

Scoobiedoo30 07-21-2008, 03:10 PM I only watched one episodes of That 80's Show.
repeatshistory 07-21-2008, 03:51 PM So, I'm the only one that will admit to having seen all 13 episodes? Ah, where are the rest of you that graduated high school between 1981 and 1987?
Scoobiedoo30 07-21-2008, 03:53 PM Sorry to say that you are the only one that watched this episode.
catlover79 07-21-2008, 04:07 PM Never saw it - it was cancelled before I could watch a single episode.
I remember this short lived show.
It wasn't that bad, but the cast wasn't as tight as the kids form That 70's Show.
There was tons of 80's references in those 13 episodes, much like the early episodes of TSS had tons of 70's stuff thrown in. If the show had gone on longer, i think they would have calmed down a bit, a few of the characters pretty much were walking 80's cliches. The dad (played by Geoff Pierson of Unhappily Ever After) wore Miami Vice inspired pastel suits ala Don Johnson.
Comic Margaret Smith was very funny as the record store owner where lead character Corey worked. She looked a bit like Roseanne and had a brilliant Steven Wright-esque deadpan delivery. She stole lots of scenes.
The one thing I really thought was good about the show was the romance between Corey and Tuesday (played by cutie Chyler Leigh sporting a 12 inch mohawk!) who also worked at the record store. At first, they hated each other. She was a tough talking punk rocker and he was an average joe who saw through her tough girl act.
Too bad the show was cancelled before thier relationship took off.
plaidman76 07-22-2008, 10:04 AM I saw a few episodes, and I remember it striking me as a just trying to cash in on the popularity of That 70's show and the whole 80's pop culture explosion. They tried too hard to cram in too many 80's references, and the actual show took a back seat to viewers just seeing stuff and going "remember those?" or "I used to wear that", and the plot got lost. Maybe it would have toned down a bit as it went on, but it's hard to develop characters when the focal point is on their outfits and not their personalities and interaction.
It wasn't horrible, but it really never stood a chance.
Scoobiedoo30 07-22-2008, 10:28 AM what year did that 80's Show come on

Vinni_Rattolle 01-10-2010, 03:52 AM It was too blatantly transparent that "That '80s Show" was trying to cash in on the success of "That '70s Show," and that's why it failed. I liked the show, but it did get bogged down in '80s references (not that "That '70s Show" didn't) and the cast never had the overall chemistry of it's previous-decade counterpart.
And as a side note, I'm convinced that "That '80s Show"'s Tinsley Grimes and "Reaper"'s Jenny Wade are the same person. Not only do the two look alike, but they sound alike... it's too Patty/Cathy to be coincidence.

That's exactly the reason why That 80's Show was made.
I think they felt that if it caught on then great but if not then cancel it right away and keep going with That 70's Show.
biffbronson 01-10-2010, 06:35 PM I remember watching the first couple of episodes. Like so many new series, I didn't know quite what to make of it. I'm an '80s person too to some extent, HS graduation '83 (woo-woo!). Preppies, leg warmers, I remember all of that!
Chocolate Moose 01-10-2010, 06:53 PM I saw all episodes; I graduated in 1983.
browneyes106 01-17-2010, 07:22 PM I watched it. I didn't think it was that bad of a show.
Brian Damage 01-17-2010, 08:23 PM The best thing about the show was Brittany Daniel.
dakert 01-17-2010, 11:19 PM I think the show blew because the 80s blew :p
You will never see a 90s show or a 2000 show.
angiefan 01-18-2010, 10:18 AM Nope.
Skywalker 01-29-2010, 02:26 AM I watched it, but it wasn't a very good show. I wasn't expecting it to be even half as good as That 70's show however, they could have put a little more effort into it. The only thing memorable about this show besides Brittany Daniel, was the girl with the mohawk. You just don't see too many girls with mohawks on tv anymore. ;)
tvfan25 10-03-2017, 09:01 PM I graduated in 1990. I watched it and I liked it. I've downloaded every episode from Youtube! Plus it had Geoff Pierson in it who also played Jack Malloy on "Unhappily Ever After".

DJM77 10-04-2017, 05:50 AM I remember watching it some, but I have zero desire to ever watch it again.
BigManMike 10-04-2017, 11:49 PM Never seen it. But I liked Brittany Daniel as Kelly Pitts on The Game.
Hawkee 10-05-2017, 01:45 AM I remember hearing about That 80's Show but never watched an episode of it but it seemed that FOX wanted to do a successful spin-off of That 70's Show but one of the reasons I think That 80's Show was cancelled was because FOX didn't promote it well and seemed to be focusing on their other sitcoms that were successful rather than showing That 80's Show. But had That 80's Show had not been cancelled FOX would've have a smart hit on their hands

BigManMike 10-05-2017, 09:08 PM It just seems awkward that That 80’s Show was cancelled before That 70’s Show.
I loved the show personally. The only one I didn't care for was Brittany Daniel. Having grown up in the 80's I could understand the humor in the show. I only got to ever catch 3 episodes on TV. Luckily I was able to get a set years later. I wasn't disappointed in the least bit with it. To bad they never got to develop the Corey and Tuesday relationship more.
Impressions 04-07-2018, 06:17 PM I re-watched this show on Hulu. I enjoyed it and would've continued to watch it, but it didn't re-capture magic that was The '70s Show. It's just too bad the characters weren't very developed...they were were caricatures of '80s stereotypes (valley girl, punk girl, yuppie, Don Johnson wannabe, etc.), rather than three dimensional people. They also didn't have a whole lot of chemistry (they were all pretty snarky to each other). There was also way too many reminders that it was the '80s and too many topical references. It's like the whole show was, "Hey, it's the '80s, let's do this '80s thing. Did I mention that it's the '80s?" And it got old, fast.
TV Guy 04-10-2018, 09:26 PM Totally forced. “Hey, can I call you later on my cordless phone? I want to tell you about my new parachute pants.”
Videoranger007 04-16-2018, 09:02 AM I remember seeing the first advertisement for it and thinking "this will last a week"
Glenn Howerton with that curly moptop.... at least he went on to be hilarious in Always Sunny.
treky 04-17-2018, 02:18 AM I remember reading about it when it was on and I heard it wasn't very good.
IllinoisTVFan 04-17-2018, 11:22 PM I watched it and it had some great scenes and some forced. It was the first show set in the 80's and that fall other 80's shows premiered. Sadly there wouldn't be a successful show set in the 80's for ten years or so when the Goldbergs premiered.

That '80s Show (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/That80sShow), a spin-off to the hugely popular That '70s Show that was cancelled after only one season. The show's main problem was that it had no link whatsoever to That '70s Show; none of the characters or actors were involved. The daring stuff that made That '70s Show so notable was totally absent, as were likable and identifiable characters. It was basically a bland middle-of-the-road sitcom where the one-dimensional protagonists mostly made cheap and random references to 1980s pop culture. After a few episodes, Fox started changing the originally intended chronological order of the episodes, but it was already too late. None of the fans of That '70s Show liked it and newcomers weren't particularly interested either. The only remotely interesting thing about this show is that three actors on it would later be seen on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Glenn Howertonnote , Charlie Daynote , and Brittany Danielnote ). Here's Brad Jones (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/BradJones) putting himself through it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANgmloWFmm8).
Impressions 05-26-2018, 09:59 AM As bad as it was, I hope it gets a DVD release. I know it won't happen anytime soon, but yeah, no good copies can be found anywhere . It used to be on Hulu and it had great quality episodes, but then they yanked it off there with no notice. I hope it comes back to Hulu or it is released on DVD soon.

Kirk Buchner and Chris Bournea examine the failure that was #That80sShow (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/that80sshow), a show that should have been successful, but was created by people who misremembered that decade.
