View Full Version : Pros and Cons of Million Dollar Password
howierules86 06-02-2008, 08:14 AM PROS
Regis Philbin hosting (sue me)
The choice of celebrities (well, at least for this week)
No cliffhanger commercials
The platform rising up before the $1M climb (so cool!)
Contestants having the choice to give or recieve the clues
The cluegiver getting a sneak peek at the $250K and above clues before deciding to go on
CONS
Too much canned applause
The loss of the Password Puzzle & Alphabetics bonus round
Only 3 clues can be given in the climb to $1M game (should be more)
Trying to use the 60s version's bonus round as the maingame
Personally, I think this show's structure is similar to the Power of 10's. I wish PO10 was still on, I think this would have been a perfect companion to it for sure. I think if this was a completely new show like PO10, it wouldn't be ragged on nearly as much.
So, how about you? What did you think?
I only saw the last twenty minutes, which was pretty much just the bonus round with Neil Patrick Harris and the guy Eric. I enjoyed it a lot, surprisingly. I don't know how I'd like the main game, though.
Personally, and I said this before, I think the coolest thing they could do to bring back the "Password" franchise is to do a daily syndicated version of "Password Plus" (or they could call it "Super Password" if they want to). IMO, the addition of the Password Puzzle and the Alphabetics/Super Password bonus round made the new game so much more exciting than the original format that the original can get boring very fast. I love all three to death, but if I had to take one on a desert island, it'd be P+ without a doubt.
And I agree about the celebrity choices. I think that because its network primetime, they can get people who are relatively big names, TV-wise. I have no clue who the other celebrities will be, but I see Betty White in the promos, and that's always a good thing!
Jude The Obscure 06-02-2008, 01:06 PM I enjoyed this a lot!!!! Neil Patrick Harris was cool and it would be wise to have him back (provided the show is greenlit for more episodes). I hope it did well in the ratings! My mother also enjoyed this and certainly thought NPH was cute  I like the format's throwback to the '60s game play. Basically what we have though is two half hours joined to make an hour. I can see this one getting picked up for daily syndication.
Jude The Obscure 06-02-2008, 01:09 PM CBS and NBC shared leadership on this first Sunday in June, with CBS
first in total viewers and NBC No. 1 among adults 18-49. In
series-premiere news, CBS game show revival Million Dollar Password
opened with a first-place 10.69 million viewers and a 2.2 rating/7
share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that built from
lead-in 60 Minutes (Viewers: #1, 10.04 million; A18-49: #1: 1.5/ 5 at
7 p.m.) by 650,000 viewers and 47 percent among adults 18-49.
Congratulations, Reege!
The real test is to see the ratings for subsequent episodes, though. It's a great sign that a lot of people tuned in for the pilot, so hopefully they all come back! When's the next time it airs?
Pavan 06-02-2008, 03:52 PM Next airing is Sunday at 8pm with Rosie O'Donnell and Tony Hawk. Betty White will be with Susie Essman on a special night Thursday, June 12 at 8pm for episode three. Steven Weber and Shanna Moakler are the celebs on episode 4 on Sunday, June 22. Monique Coleman is in one of the last 2 episodes. 6 episodes will air.
JulieSomoski 06-02-2008, 04:25 PM I gotta say, I really enjoyed watchng this last night. It was something fresh to watch on Sunday nights. Personally, if ratings stayed around 10 million, I wouldn't be surprised to see CBS keep it around in the fall or winter.
I think the great thing about it last night was that they had A-list celebrities, rather than the D-list ones we usually see on gameshows and reality shows (like Dancing with the Stars). And, even though I did kind of miss the main puzzle game, I don't see it working anyother way when a million dollars is at stake. Plus, Regis was great in this game! You can just tell he's suited for gameshows like this. It was almost like watching Millionaire again in primetime!

Julie, two of the stars on Password have been on Dancing with the Stars...Shanna and Monique. These are the same style celebs as DWTS. D listers only go on shows like Surreal Life, Celebrity Rehab or Celebrity Boxing.
Jude The Obscure 06-02-2008, 04:28 PM I really like the fact that the more traditional old school games are doing fairly well in the ratings! Hopefully we will see more well done revivals of other old Goodson-Toddman games.

You're right - I guess D-list was a bit harsh for DWTS. Still, Neil and Rachael are more of A-list celebrities, so it was nice to see them on Password.
I thought I'd edit this in - the premiere skewed extremely old last night, which I guess isn't surprising at all, but it got a huge 8.1 rating in adults 50 and older, and only 2.2 for the 18-49 demo.
Pavan 06-02-2008, 04:38 PM Sunday, June 8 (8:00 - 9:00 PM, ET/PT)

LMFAO, so it's safe to say that the popularity of the celebrities drops with each episode. I just don't get it. In the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and even the 1980s, all of the big TV stars did game shows all the time, and many of those shows were daytime or syndicated shows, but here we have big, primetime shows, and still, I can imagine countless stars turning their noses up.
Some people need to get over themselves! Seriously!
I really like the fact that the more traditional old school games are doing fairly well in the ratings! Hopefully we will see more well done revivals of other old Goodson-Toddman games.
ITA! All I ask is that we get nothing like the 2002 version of "Card Sharks" or the 1998 version of "Match Game." I think the best revival of any game show in the last couple of years was without a doubt "Pyramid." Donny Osmond was an awesome host and the game was basically the same, and I loved every minute of it.

Once you mentioned it, it hit me that this show kind of seems like a revived version of Pyramid rather than Password. Think, the first round where the 2 contestants go against each other to get to the money round is almost exactly like Pyramid, and even the main money round is in a way like Pyramid. Just a thought.

Well TBS is reviving "Match Game" in a new late night version--so we can just imagine how taudry and raunchy this version will be :( Yes, the '70s version had it's share of wink winks and nudge nudges, but it was not to the point where everything had to be some sort of referral to sex.

it helps that Bob Stewart was the creative force behind both "Password" and "Pyramid" :)

Didn't think of that either

The 70s MG was my type of sexual/risque/mature humor. It was just that -- mature. There wasn't a constant need to talk about sex...if it made sense for it to come up, it came up. They talked about sex as if they were talking about the stock market. There was never a big deal about it. Nowadays, somebody will say "titties" as an answer and there'll be twenty minutes of titty jokes to follow.
Jude The Obscure 06-05-2008, 10:07 AM Thanks JT--exactly why I didn't care for the last revival of "Hollywood Squares"
Scoobiedoo30 06-08-2008, 02:57 PM any news on How The Airing of Million Dollar Password did
Jude The Obscure 06-08-2008, 10:16 PM The first one Aaron, did over 10 million viewers--very good for a summer series!
Tonight's episode was very good--Rosie sure knows how to play the game, but please DO NOT ASK TONY HAWK BACK!! he is lousy at this.
howierules86 06-09-2008, 06:57 AM Regarding last night's episode (6/8):
When I heard that Rosie O'Donnell was going to be one of the celebs on MDP, I was less than thrilled. But after seeing what a great competitor she was last night (especially after getting some perfect scores in the maingame and even mentioning Allen Ludden briefly), I wouldn't mind seeing her back again (maybe once a year would be nice). Also, it was great to finally see a $50K win on this show. Also, who else got a kick out of when one of the lightning round passwords was "Trump" and Rosie had to give a clue to it?

I thought of that too-LOL. Of all the clues to give, Rosie got trump, of course :D
And I really enjoyed Rosie last night. She was funny and loud, which is why I used to love her back in the day. She was great at the game - way better than Tony Hawk. I wouldn't mind seeing her become a semi-regular, like gameshows used to have in the past.
From the ratings I saw, this episode did around 9.5 million, which is about on par with last week, with just a little drop. I think it'll stay around that for the rest of it's airings.
robyrob 06-09-2008, 01:36 PM is it just me or why does the set of EVERY SINGLE ONE of these new game shows look basically the same?
I mean they all have the same dark backgrounds, with lots of lights and stairs and things?

I kind of like this set, though. It seems like a set suited fora million-dollar gameshow, similar to the old Millionaire set.
Jude The Obscure 06-09-2008, 07:22 PM too many game shows since Millionaire all share that futuristic set--it's a trend I wish would go away!
It'll be interesting to see how Password does on June 12 for its special Thursday airing.

My guess it'll do extremely well, since Thursday has always been a good night for CBS no matter what, and it has the game show queen herself, Betty White, on the program. My guess is about 12 million viewers, but I could be completely wrong :D
Ireneparalegal 06-09-2008, 07:44 PM I have not seen this game show.
Impressions 06-10-2008, 03:39 PM Although the format will take some time to get used to; this will probably be the only modern-day game show I'll be watching this summer (can't wait for this Thursday!).
Jude The Obscure 06-10-2008, 03:59 PM I think the format is perfectly suited for this version. Some have wanted a return to the formats used by Password Plus or SuperPassword, but I think this one is more of a homage to the original series from the '60s.

I agree - you really don't see many low-prized gameshows in primetime anymore. In this day in age, the highest prize offered is usually a million dollars, and I don't see any other way in which that can be implemented without this new format.
LeeBlue 06-11-2008, 02:36 PM I've watched both episodes of Password and enjoyed them -- nowadays I think big prize money is expected and part of the fun.
BTW there is a special episode of Password on this Thursday (June 12) and one of the guests will be Betty White.
Tonight's episode was the best and funnest so far, without a doubt. Betty is 86 years old but still pretty much on top of her game and managed to help a contestant win $100,000 in the second game.
If this is really successful, a daily syndicated version would be awesome. I'd love to wake up with a new "Password" every morning.
catlover79 06-12-2008, 11:40 PM I still want to see the 1988 episode of Password where the Barney Miller cast (including Gregory Sierra :eyes:) was on. Who was hosting the show at that time?
70s show watcher 06-13-2008, 12:32 AM I still want to see the 1988 episode of Password where the Barney Miller cast (including Gregory Sierra :eyes:) was on. Who was hosting the show at that time?bert convy was the host in 1988
Scoobiedoo30 06-13-2008, 12:37 AM I was wondering why does Regis stay when they play The Bonus Round in the old Game Show Super Password Burt would leave when they were playing The Bouns Round
howierules86 06-13-2008, 09:20 AM I saw last night's episode as well, and in addition to Betty White making such a great appearance, and seeing two $100K wins in both games, it is now known how a tiebreaker is played. There is just one word, and both teams alternate giving clues until someone gets it, and whoever gets it wins.

Yep. I loved how Regis referred to it as "classic Password" because that's exactly what it was.
Honestly, I've finally realized that the game is a great mix of all versions of the show. You have the traditional Password format of one-word clues and one-word guesses, and the whole game (both the front and end games) is very similar to Alphabetics/Super Password. It's a rapid succession of passwords, the only difference is that the passwords aren't in alphabetical order.
One more mention about last night's show. The contestant who won the second half and played with Betty seemed to REALLY enjoy herself! There were several times were she said "YOU'RE AWESOME!" and "I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!" to Betty.
JulieSomoski 06-13-2008, 01:08 PM I absolutely loved last night's episode. The best so far. And wasn't Betty White a riot last night? I absolutely love that woman - she was funny, witty, and still played the game like she always has. I hope she makes more appearances, because having her as a regular celebrity would be just great.
Scoobiedoo30 06-13-2008, 01:13 PM Last Night was Funny with Betty White
mstewart 06-13-2008, 02:08 PM Last night's show was very good. It would be good if they pull out some of the past celebrities who played Password over the years. Regis is doing a great job. I love it when he called Betty an old pro and she replied you got half of that right.
Scoobiedoo30 06-13-2008, 02:15 PM that would be great
catlover79 06-13-2008, 04:22 PM bert convy was the host in 1988
Thank you!!!
Jude The Obscure 06-13-2008, 07:00 PM Another great episode!!!! BETTY ROCKS!!
BTW, here are the ratings! Looks like Password is gonna be on for awhile :D
Viewers: #1, 9.52 million; A18-49: #2, 2.0/ 7
JulieSomoski 06-13-2008, 08:50 PM Looks like this show is the hit show of the summer, by far. It's stayed consisten for all 3 episodes, which is a great sign. Let's hope it can maintain this - hopefully we can see it on in the fall as well. I think MDP would go well with 60 Minutes Sundays at 8pm in the fall ;)
Jude The Obscure 06-13-2008, 09:37 PM The one thing CBS can't do is to just overexpose this show, thus killing it. I think they need to maybe order an additional 13 episodes (they should have ordered 13 for the summer!) and use it judiciously. Power of 10 had momentum last summer, then CBS,imo, brought it back too soon and placed it in a killer time slot. Price is Right also did well on Friday nights, then the move to Wednesdays kinda slowed the momentum, although even now in reruns, it keeps getting 7 million.
70s show watcher 06-14-2008, 01:22 AM Thank you!!!your welcome
Oh, I adore those ratings!
I agree with Jude. The thing that kills these big money primetime game shows is the overexposure. I honestly don't see the syndicated "Deal or No Deal" lasting long at all. It's pretty much one of NBC's only real big hits now, and they're relying on it an awful lot. I just don't see it translating well into syndication. People will be tired of by then, I think. And plus, I don't think the show's format works well as a daily, daytime show at all. And the worst thing that could happen is that it gets into the primetime access slot and you'd have a half-hour syndicated episode airing right before a network airing. It'd be DOND overload!
With MDP, I think CBS should just air it in groups. They could have this summer run, then maybe a run in September or November, and then it could join the regular schedule at mid-season.
catlover79 06-14-2008, 10:57 AM I totally agree about the overexposure. That's what killed Who Wants To Be a Millionaire.
Jude The Obscure 06-14-2008, 02:30 PM The whole problem with DoND is that the game itself is a bonus round, not the main thing that should be playing as a game.
And yet, NBC had a good game in "1 vs 100" and gave it the shaft for more idiotic crap like "Identity" and "Amnesia".
DoND also reruns on CNBC. Heaven help if GSN ever picks up the reruns.
Millionaire however continues to thrive in syndication--it is the third highest rated syndicated game show.
JulieSomoski 06-14-2008, 06:39 PM I think they shouldn't overexpose it, but I think it deserves to be aired as a regular season show rather than a summer show. What they should maybe do, if not airing it in the fall, is air it inbetween cycles of The Amazing Race, which would in like January and February, although I'd rather see it take the place of TAR.
Coffeecup 06-16-2008, 09:17 AM MY only thought is the stage. It is somewhat like the Don't forget the Lyrics stage. I was so used the little dias type set they used it the old days of the show. Betty had to stand. Here she is at her age and has to stand. But she did all right. It llook like an award stage. But to have a studio audience I guess they have to have bobbles and bangles But all in all a good show.

ITA about Deal or No Deal. I like to watch it every now and then, but it's the type of show where if you've seen it once or twice, you've pretty much seen it a hundred times.
I love WWTBAM in syndication! It's great in both the daytime and primetime access slots, and it really works, I think. Meredith's a great host, the show is modern while still being an easy to understand game. I can see it going on for many, many years.
howierules86 06-23-2008, 11:01 AM I just caught last night's episode, and in addition to Shanna Moakler and Steven Weber making guest appearances, and both contestants only winning $25K due to missing at a higher level, who else got a kick out of when Steven gave the clue "Host" for the password "Guest" and the contestant said "Regis" which made Regis wonder, "Why can't it [the password] be Regis?"
Jude The Obscure 06-23-2008, 12:27 PM Darnit!!!!!! missed that one......does CBS replay the show at its website?
Had to work a stupid split shift and natch, didn't have the VCR set.
Scoobiedoo30 06-23-2008, 12:38 PM I did not get to see last Night episode who was on it
Jude The Obscure 06-23-2008, 11:05 PM The ratings were slightly down at 8.25 million, but considering this is summer time and it was still the largest viewed show of the night (I think 60 Minutes was slightly ahead)--that is still good news. If they renew it--get back Neil Patrick Harris and Rosie O' Donnell--they are EXCELLENT players.
Pavan 06-25-2008, 01:32 AM Steven Weber was good I thought this week...anyway:
THIS JUST IN... From CBS Entertainment...

My biggest problem with DoND is that it's become way too much of a caricature of itself. I usually don't mind and actually enjoy when game shows have special moments and things like that, but this show just goes above and beyond with that concept and it was one of the things that made me quit watching about two years ago. Just way too much fluff IMHO. I also agree about the overexposure.
As far as MDP goes, I definitely wasn't a fan of the format in the beginning, but it's growing on me. But I still like the show more for the celebs and Regis.
howierules86 06-30-2008, 08:47 AM Last night's episode of MDP definitely wasn't the greatest one, with the first contestant failing the $25K level and winning $0 as a result. At least the second contestant reached the $25K guarantee before bombing on the $50K level. Sara Evans & Steve Schirripa didn't impress me in the maingame, either.
Jude The Obscure 06-30-2008, 10:37 AM Missed that one as well....I wonder if CBS is gonna run another rerun on Thursday?
Pavan 06-30-2008, 10:47 AM Rosie/Tony Hawk repeat on Thursday.
robyrob 06-30-2008, 10:57 AM i only saw the one episode with Rachael Ray and NPH, and while they were good, every show hosted by Regis seems the same to me - overall wasn't interesting enough for me to watch again.
Jude The Obscure 06-30-2008, 11:24 AM Thanks Pav......I enjoyed that one.

I agree. Steve Schirripa was a horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible player. He was a terrrrrrrrrrible player. He took too long to respond to clues and when it was his turn to give clues, the ones her gave were beyond ridiculous.
Sara Evans sucked in the first game, but I think she stepped it up a bit for the second part. Still not great, but better.
I feel sorry for all four contestants. You could tell how pissed they were to be stuck with such horrible players.
Jude The Obscure 06-30-2008, 02:24 PM The best I have seen are Neil Patrick Harris, Rosie O'Donnell and Betty White.

howierules86 11-15-2008, 05:06 PM I still want to see the 1988 episode of Password where the Barney Miller cast (including Gregory Sierra :eyes:) was on. Who was hosting the show at that time?
The version you're thinking of is "Super Password" which ran on NBC daytime from 1984 to 1989 and was hosted by Bert Convy. The special "Barney Miller" week (which had Hal Linden, Max Gail, Ron Carey, & Gregory Sierra) was from March 7, 1988 to March 11, 1988.
Hawkee 04-21-2025, 05:11 AM I never figured out how or why Million Dollar Password existed for CBS because when my dad recommended this show to me because I liked Regis Philbin I found Million Dollar Password unappealing. Because I think CBS was trying to make a 2000's Password and by adding Million Dollar to the title showed that this was a different version of Password than the original. Why Regis Philbin was chosen to host Million Dollar Password was simply because they were making him a Comeback Kid but he and Password didn't mix at all and they should've gotten another host instead of Regis. The other thing I noticed about this version of Password is that they put weird sound effects to make it modern for the 2000's like in the first rounds they put a basketball game buzzer and that doesn't fit Password at all and when a round was over the buzzer used for the timer sound effect was exactly the Family Feud strike indicator sound effect. But had they put computerized graphics the show would've been better. I think CBS wanted to promote it's shows by having celebrities like Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race and Julie Chen of Big Brother and why William Shatner was on there i'll never know? But I think Betty White had a lot to do with why the show would be a hit because I think Betty White wanted to show that she could still do Password . But even with merchandise Million Dollar Password ended being a weak one-hit wonder game show for CBS
Hawkee 04-23-2025, 03:02 AM I think the main problem was with Million Dollar Password was that I think CBS overhyped it way too much and by the time it finally had it's debut episode people were so tired of hearing so much about it Million Dollar Password was gonna be given the title "one-hit wonder." But why CBS decided to air Million Dollar Password at night was really odd to me because CBS and nighttime game shows don't go together well in the game show soup. I mean look at Winning Lines and look at the failure of The Hollywood Game with Bob Goen from 1993. Because it seems that CBS has more success in the daytime market with The Price Is Right and Let's Make A Deal and if Million Dollar Password would've been put in the daytime hour to go with The Price Is Right it would've been successful then. But I know why Regis Philbin was chosen to host Million Dollar Password was because CBS thought he could get the show huge ratings since every single show he hosted got big sky high ratings because Regis was like a magic wizard and with Regis Philbin as the host of Million Dollar Password Regis thought his magic would score Million Dollar Password an audience. But they should've chosen better celebrity players that could play the game with ease. As I mentioned in my previous post how William Shatner got on Million Dollar Password is weird because he was weak and why Tony Hawk was featured as a celebrity player i'll never figure out
