What do you mean by No Man's Land?

We've had this type of thread before. It is basically characters that just seemed to disappear from a show without any explanation. Like the dog, Tiger from the Brady Bunch or the cat, Fluffy. I know, they aren't characters but they are things we seen on the pilot or in the first season but suddenly disappeared.

Just like Carrie's sister on King of Queens. We never saw her again.

It is called the CHUCK CUNNINGHAM SYNDROME, named after the character on Happy Days we never saw or heard from again:

Karin Argoud and Eric Brown (Sonja and Buzz) in Mama's Family.

Samantha Molly on Life With Bonnie.

Sara Spooner and Richie Ianucci on King of Queens.

Warren Ferguson on The Andy Griffith Show.

Lana Shields on Three's Company.

Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard.

Brendan Lambert on Step by Step.

Kim McFarlane, Dan Ferreira and Sasha Perkins in EastEnders.

Tina Pinciotti on That '70s Show is revealed to be Donna Pinciotti's younger sister, after Fez hits on her she is never seen again.

On Square One TV, the character Kate Monday disappeared after the third season and was replaced with Pat Tuesday.

In The West Wing the character Mandy did not return after the end of season one, even though the first two episodes of season 2 included flashbacks to the campaign she also worked on. The term Mandyville was coined for her character.

In The Doris Day Show, Day's character had originally been depicted as a widowed mother of two small children working as a secretary at a publishing firm. At the beginning of the show's fourth season the character abruptly became a "swinging single" journalist and all the supporting characters disappeared. The departures included her coworker, played by Rose Marie, her boss, played by McLean Stevenson, and her two small children. No effort was made to explain this change.

Benny Hawkins, the slow-witted repairman on Crossroads, was last seen in 1987 climbing up a ladder to change a light bulb.

Because of the nature of the show, 24 does this often. The characters Adam Kaufman and Tom Baker both disappeared after the third season. Several characters such as Lynne Kresge, Evelyn Martin, and President John Keeler, were last seen in serious condition but their fate has never been revealed. Milo Pressman appeared in the first season but was dropped partway through. He returned in season 6, 105 episodes later.

The first season of M*A*S*H had several characters that were carried over from the novel and film of the same name, but subsequently dropped, including Spearchucker Jones, Ugly John, Lieutenant Dish, and General Hammond.

Miles Goodman on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

Claire Simms of Boston Legal. Also Sara Holt and Garrett Wells disappeared during the second season with no explanation.

Wendy Goldman on ER vanished without explanation after the third season.

After the first season of Gerry Anderson's British science fiction TV series UFO, Alec Freeman, Gay Ellis and Peter Carlin disappear. Their absence is never explained.

Similarly, Victor Bergman, Paul Morrow and David Kano vanish after the first season on Anderson's subsequent series Space: 1999.

Kevin Swanson and Cleveland Jr. from Family Guy have both vanished after the third season for unexplained reasons, both have had quick cameos in The Perfect Castaway and haven't appeared since.

Judy Winslow in Family Matters

The character of Boxey in the Battlestar Galactica TV series.

Irene, I can't believe you forgot to mention CARL DIXON (Good Times)!!! :eek2: Cletus Hogg did turn up in the Dukes of Hazzard reunion movies, for the record.

I don't call where these characters vanished to No Man's Land - I call it the Island of Misfit TV Characters (instead of the Island of Misfit Toys in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer). I always felt kind of sorry for those characters.

Now, I watch Roseanne but didn't the same thing happen to Crystal? You just didn't see her anymore. From what I've read, alot of fans thought she was annoying anyway.

On Wings, Kenny & Bud. Kenny was on for a few episodes when he got hired on to fly in the place of Joe who couldn't fly because of his high blood pressure. Then you never saw him again. Did Sandpiper end up letting him go or what??

Bud was brought in to take over Lowell's job when Thomas Haden Church left the show. I have to say that Bud wasn't as funny as Lowell and I know Lowell was a fan favorite. I guess the writers felt they really didn't have a good storyline revolving around Bud.

Bobby Martin, the youngest Martin sibling on "All My Children," went up to the attic to get his skis in 1970 and never came down. Many, many years later, when a character (I forget who) was up in the Martin attic, they happened to come across a scarf with the name "BOBBY" stitched in it. In 1985, Don Craig of "Days of our Lives" went outside to get the mail and never came back.

Many of the characters on the original "Mission: Impossible" came and went and their absence is never explained.

What's even more weird is that whenever a new character comes along, they're never properly introduced to the team and it's as if they were a part of the team.

Dan Briggs (Steven Hill)
Cinnamon Carter (Barbara Bain)
Rollind Hand (Martin Landau)
Paris (Leonard Nimoy)
Dana Lambert (Leslie Ann Warren)

Others:
Emily Weston - Empty Nest, she came for one season in 1992 and was never heard from again after that.

Billy - Who's the Boss?

Fay Furillo - Hill Street Blues

George Burnett - The Facts of Life

Exactly, there was also another daughter of the Pinciottis on '70s Show that had the Syndrome. Well actually, she never appeared but was mentioned once or twice and never appeared or never was heard of again so Donna was always called the Pinciotti's lonely child, do you remember that if you watch the show or no? Her name was Valery. Also, Hyde's mother, played by Katie Segal was sort of written off in a Chuck Cunningham kind of way. She only appeared visibly ONCE and was heard of 3 times, the other 2 you just heard her yelling to hyde from another room of the house in early episodes of That 70s Show.

Yes, Coy and Vance vanished into oblivion the moment Bo and Luke returned. Here's another one - Annie Fairgate, Sid's oldest daughter, on the pilot episode of Knots Landing. She was played by Karen Allen and was only seen once. Annie was mentioned a couple more times the rest of the first season, and that was it!!

Nurse Sandy was played by Stephanie Hodge (who later went on to star in the WB's "Unhappily Ever After," the WB rip-off of "Married with Children") and she received the worst of all the other four by the time S3 of Nurses came along, since she was the most heavily sacrificed character for Loni Anderson's character.

Dr. Amanda Riskin was played by Florence Stanley, a.k.a. Fish's wife on "Barney Miller" and "Fish."

Luke was played by Marcus Flanagan, which his only season was S2.

Speaking of "Fish," both Fish and his wife were never heard of again on BM after "Fish" ended.

Mr. Twinkicetti, their [Larry and Balki on "Perfect Strangers"] first boss/landlord, disappeared after Season 2.

I think the reason he left was because the cousins had moved on to greener pastures at the Chicago Chronicle. (Then again, I always thought of "Twinky" as their boss at Ritz Discount.)

I'll add the following to the list:

Rose Burton - The Waltons
Serena Burton - The Waltons
Jeffrey Burton - The Waltons

I think they all left by the time Season 9 (1980-81; the final season) started.

Randy Mitchell - The Wonder Years
Doug Porter - The Wonder Years
Becky Slater - The Wonder Years

All were never seen again after Kevin and Co. moved on to high school.

Spearchucker on "MASH"
Ginger Ballis on "MASH"
Ugly John on "MASH"
Leslie on "MASH"
Lt. Dish on "MASH"

The reason they all dissapeared was; after the first season they realized they didn't need that many characters, but they could have at least mentioned what became of them!

All those "guys in the back" in the newsroom scenes on "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW".

Dr. Tupperman and the other doctors on Bob and Jerrys floor in "THE BOB NEWHART SHOW.

Pearl went back home to the hills. She continued to be refered to and appeared one last time in the 6th or 7th season. (Bea Benaderet left BH to star in Petticoat Junction.) Mrs. Drysdale was just missing from the last season, though I guess we can assume she was still there, next door, but just didn't come over.

Aunt Bee never left the Andy Griffith Show, she was on longer than Andy, himself, when she continued on into Mayberry RFD; however she left this show (don't know if there was explanation).
