My guess is that there is some relation between Wally's plans for the night and the ending where Ward has been summoned to see his supervisor; and that Beaver knows something about what is going on, judging by his laughter and sarcasm when it is mentioned that Wally will spend the night at Eddie's. That's my general guess... taking a wild one to get specific, I'll say that Wally is meeting Ward's supervisior's daughter, and Eddie is to cover for him, saying, if asked, that Wally is spending the night at his house.

ed. On another thought, I didn't consider your title, "Rescuing Beaver." So maybe this deception is more (or also) to give Beaver some kind of chance at something?
