I stole this from idolforums.com.

Now that we've finished season 7, let's take the time to reflect on all the other seasons and their winners. As the topic states, did America get it right?

Season 1 (Kelly Clarkson) : YESSSSSS. Best Idol winner ever! She has had so much success and haha...where is Justin? Or anyone else from that season, for that matter  NOWHERESVILLE, that's where.
Season 2 (Ruben Studdard): No. Ha well at the time I was actually a Ruben fan, but looking back on it years down the road, Clay was wayyyyy more talented and original than Ruben. He was also more marketable (as you can see from his sales and concerts...lol). No doubt about it though, Ruben was a good singer...Clay was just a better performer and more original.
Season 3 (Fantasia Barrino): NO NO NO NO by a mile. Most overrated contestant ever. Personally I wanted Diana DeGarmo to win, but in theory, the best singer that season was probably Jennifer Hudson or La Toya.
Season 4 (Carrie Underwood): Yes. Even though she was not my favorite during season 4 and I had actually pushed for Bo during the finale, again, years down the road, she is way more talented than Bo and all the other contestants and that definitely shows from how much success she has now.
Season 5 (Taylor Hicks): Ugh definitely NO. Probably the worst winner ever. Chris Daughtry should have won. No contest.
Season 6 (Jordin Sparks): Hmmmmm... well between her and Blake, she definitely should have won and was probably one of the most talented of the season, but I dunno... in a way, I sort of think it maybe should have been Melinda. But eh I will say yes for Jordin.
Season 7 ( ..... UGH .....): Don't get me started. Yeah uh read some of my other posts lol.

Season 1. I didn't watch, but Tamyra shoulda won if it was about SINGING. Kelly Clarkson's post-Idol stuff is great, though, so no worries.
Season 2. Ruben rules and I love him, but Clay should've won. Didn't watch this year, though. But obviously.. *is a huge Claytard to this day*
Season 3. Uh, no. Latoya should've won. But I was happy with Tasia winning at the time. SINGING competition, folks.
Season 4. I wanted Bo to win, but Carrie was the stronger technical singer so yes, you could say they got it right. Mario was my original favorite though and I think he shoulda won but we don't need to rehash the horror that went down with that situation. :grady:
Season 5. Nah, but Taylor rules so I can live with it. CHRIS DAUGHTRY, HELLO.
Season 6. I think Melinda was most deserving, but I loved both Blake and Jordin so I think any of the 3 were worthy. Best season everr.
Season 7. Love D-Cook as a person but he wasn't deserving as a singer when put up against David Archuleta, obviously. So no, they did not get it right. Clay/Ruben part 2. I just wanna say that was the first season that I actually watched where it was an all-male finale, and I'm definitely feeling THAT aspect of it right there.. REPEAT NEXT YEAR PLZ. Hell let's just have an all-male top 12/top 24. JUST KIDDING, I like some of the females, but the guys are always my favorite so yeah needless to say this was fun for me.

Season 1 - yes. shouldve been either her or Tamyra.
Season 2 - no. Clay >>>> Ruben.
Season 3 - eh i dont care for Tasia but the only other person deserving of winning was LaToya and she didnt make the finale. Diana was good but not winner-material. so ill say...MAYBE.
Season 4 - yes. <333
Season 5 - no. anyone but him out of the top 4 shouldve won. lol. its okay though this season >>>> all the others so i can forgive America for screwing up here.
Season 6 - YES. Jordin <3
Season 7 - no. see Season 2 only replace Clay with David A and Ruben with David C. :)

it seems like every other year they get it right. so in Season 8 they'll get it right again :woohoo: i believe in you America.

Season 1, Kelly Clarkson: Yes, for sure. Kelly rocks!
Season 2, Ruben Studdard: I could live with him winning.
Season 3, Fantasia Barrino: Nope, not a chance. Diana DeGarmo should have won this year.
Season 4, Carrie Underwood: OH YEAH! Carrie totally deserved to win this year for sure! Plus, she still looks good to me, and her performance last night really showed it.
Season 5, Taylor Hicks: Yep, he rocked this year all right. Go, Soul Patrol!
Season 6, Jordin Sparks: Well, if Melinda Doolittle couldn't win... at least Jordin did.
Season 7, David Cook: Nope, sorry, wrong David. David Archuleta should have won this year.

YES, America finally got It right. David Cook was CLEARLY the better singer and deserved to win It. The 12 million vote difference tells the story.
IT WASN'T EVEN CLOSE!!!!!

How much do you think David Archuleta's dad's behavior played a part in how America voted? I mean, the whole bad stage dad was played out for the longest time. I don't think teens cared abt that whole thing, but older people may not have wanted D.A. to win simply because they couldn't stand his dad and his antics and therefore gave it to the less controversial singer.

Just my opinion, I don't watch the show but I sure seen so many news accounts abt David's father and it was not good.

i dont think it really played any factor at all. it was really obvious the entire thing was exagerrated. i hope it didnt play a factor anyway, people shouldnt vote based on exagerrated media stories.

I don't think his dad had anything to do with it. David Cook was clearly the best singer, anybody in their right mind could figure that out. The boys luck just run out. "It wasn't even close"!

No, they shouldn't. But people do get swayed by certain things.

i guess. i just think Archuleta lost didn't win because the producers were pushing extremely hard for Cook and both them and America wanted a "rocker" winner after Daughtry was robbed two seasons ago. there's no doubt in my mind that if this exact same final two had happened in seasons 1-4 Archuleta would've won.

Since I am not a regular viewer of AI since season 1, can you tell me how is it that producers can push viewers/voters to vote for a particular person?

it's a lot of little things that become more and more obvious as you watch more...most of it is through the judges. the person the judges favor (it's extremely obvious usually) is usually who the producers favor. it's also a lot of really miniscule things like performance order...the person who performs last ALWAYS gets a huge boost in the voting, and aside from the finale only 2 people in the history of the show have ever performed last and gotten voted off. so if someone performs last a lot that's usually a sign the producers like them (the 2 Davids performed last much more then anyone else this season).

it seems crazy, but the more you watch Idol the more you realize how manipulated it is.

I see. Thank you for that info. I hear on the entertainment news how the judges supposedly show favoritism towards a particular singer but since the judges don't score, I wondered, how does their favoritism even matter in the voting. I think I understand it now. ;)

yeah its not just the judges either, its other stuff too. like...top 3 week, for one round the producers choose a song for each of the 3 contestants. they gave Archuleta and Syesha extremely obscure, weird songs, yet gave David Cook "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith. coincidence? i think not :p

Simon did his best to give it to Archuleta with his knock out remark. I think it was far from a knock out though. That remark may have actually motivated the Cook voters. I think America got it right. But like Simon said, and I pretty much agree, I wouldn't have minded seeing either one win.

Do you think they should change the format such as have songs written on paper, put in a box and have the contestants pull the song out rather than have songs chosen for them? Or something like that? Know what I mean?

yep, i think it was obvious they did that to rile up Cook fans more, especially with Simon's comments on finale night. i thought it was weird Simon was praising Archuleta so much since he never seemed to care for him that much.

they actually used to that in Seasons 1 and 2 but they stopped and then changed that round to Clive Davis' choice...then Clive Davis' choice was replaced with producers' chouce. not sure why

nah, it was Carrie and Anthony Fedorov, and it wasn't on purpose. they just happened to choose the same song.

unless you're referring to Inside Your Heaven, but that was the coronation song.

ANYWAY...having all of them sing the same song would be kinda weird, but it could be interesting too.

Season 1: Kelly Clarkson...DEFINATELY.
Season 2: Ruben Studdard....no it should've been Clay.
Season 3: Fantasia Barrino...yeah, she was unique.
Season 4: Carrie Underwood...yes; it was so predictable she would win that year.
Season 5: Taylor Hicks...absolutely not. It should've been Chris Daughtry.
Season 6: Jordin Sparks....uh yeah, she fits the demographic well and can sang as well as any other idol.
Season 7: David Cook...this was a win-win situation.

Season 4- I didn't watch, but I am a big fan of Carrie's, so I'll say America got it right.

Season 5- Should have been Daughtry.

Season 6- Should have been Melinda.

Season 7- David Cook totally deserved to win! Michael Johns should have been #2.

I agree that it absolutely sucked. The people on it could all pretty much sing well (except for Haley and Sanjaya) but they were so... BORING. Their performances for the most part were all so bland. Even though he was the most hated contestant that year, I think Sanjaya had the most personality out of all the top 12 .

I disagree though that it is the worst season ever. I'd say it's the 2nd worst. Season 1 is the worst. Everyone pretty much sucks on it except Kelly Clarkson and Tamyra Gray.

yeah it definitely blew and i used to think it was the worst ever...but now i think 1 & 3 were a lot worse then 6. in Season 1 everyone but Tamyra and Kelly sucked and in Season 3 EVERYONE sucked. like the entire top 12 IMO was seriously not good at all

Season 6 brought us Jordin <3 so i cant complain about it too much. sure everyone else sucked but Jordin was enough to make it at least OKAY.

i used to like Season 3, but looking back it really was terrible. not only did you have absolutely awful contestants like John Stevens and Leah LaBelle, the best people had a lot of flaws - Fantasia was just annoying, Diana and Jasmine had good voices but were very amatureish, LaToya was boring, and J-Hud was kind of obnoxious while she was on Idol lol. the contestants were entertaining but talent-wise it was BAD.

JMO anyway lol
