What do you think Alice's relationship was like with Don?

I don't think it was a great marriage. There were underline statements that their marriage was not great. It sounds like Don was a control freak because Alice did not know who she was after Don passed away. In one episode where Alice's mom visited she expressed how scare she was at first but she had to learn to take care of herself and Tommy. It sounds like she went from being taken care of by parents to being taken care of by a husband, Don.

She almost sounded like Ann Romano for awhile.

If Alice--the TV version--and Don were anything like what we saw on the movie version--that was one hell of a dysfunctional relationship. The movie Don was a complete and utter jerk (I have choicer words but refrain myself).

I'm really surprised that Alice wasn't married off in the nine years the show was on the air - pleasantly surprised! She raised Tommy on her own (with a little help from her friends - Mel was a terrific father figure), and I think that's great. Kudos to the show's writers for keeping it that way.

I'm sorry but who want to be married to that miss know it all?
I think her singing "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" kinda killed that!

I think the TV Alice and Don had a much better marriage than their movie counterparts. Just because Alice wasn't all that independent when she was married to him doesn't mean they didn't have a good marriage. Times were different back then.

There's one episode where Alice finds out that Don left a life insurance policy to another woman. She worries that he was having an affair with the woman; but in actuality, he borrowed money from the woman to buy Alice a piano. In that episode, you see very clearly how much Alice loved him.
