I think my number one favorite TV theme song of ALL time just might be the "As the World Turns" theme used from 1973 to 1981. To me, it's the absolute essence of the soap opera genre. It's grand, majestic, epic, romantic, dramatic...everything you need in a soap theme. I wasn't born until nine years after it was replaced, and so I grew up watching the show with different themes, but for some reason, no matter what, when I think ATWT, I immediately think of that classic theme song.

I think you mean pre 1990 with AMC. Its classic, original theme ran for the show's first twenty years, with three arrangements (1970, 1971, and 1976).

Get Smart - I always loved the opening scene of Maxwell Smart driving along the streets in D.C. to get out the car and go to his secret headquarters.

Police Squad! - I always cracked up laughing at the way that when the announcer said the guest stars' names, they always ended up getting shot or getting killed by something else.

Mary Tyler Moore

What's Happening!! - I loved the theme song from the 1st 2 seasons opening credits, b/c I always used to get a lugh out of seeing the guys do something crazy in the credits.

Good Times

Taxi - driving over that bridge while playing this show's theme song always gave me goosbumps in a good way.

Barney Miller - Who wouldn't jump up and down when this show's theme credits played?

Hawaii Five-O - the shots of beautiful Honolulu and Waikiki and the cast, combined w/ that awesome theme song made for a great opening theme credits!

Hill Street Blues - the theme song by itself made you forget that you were about to watch a Police Show. But I loved the intro credits of the casts' shots w/ that midwestern city background. BTW, I also made an opening credits sequence of "The Price is Right" using the "Hill Street Blues" theme song.

A-Team, The - You would love to go peppering people out of that Van while playing this theme song.

Unsolved Mysteries - The scenes w/ the murders and the opening theme song always sent chills down my spines.

Miami Vice - That '80s rockin' guitar and synthesizers and drums gave it that '80s Miami feel!

Chico and the Man - Jose Feliciano's Flamenco-sounding theme song should of served as a sign of hope for Freddie Prinze Sr. from killing himself. No. But in truth, I liked it b/c it really does tell a tale of hope.

"CHiPs" - that awesome theme song used from 1978-83 was really great w/ Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox riding the highway with the credits just showing the motorcycle, the gloves, the helmets, and the California setting itself.

There are others I could choose but these are the ones that stick out at me so far.
