FOX Kicks Off Season Early With Special Two-Hour Premieres Week of August 25


New York (Thursday, May 15, 2008) – Peter Liguori, Chairman, Entertainment; and Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, today unveiled the FOX primetime schedule for the 2008-2009 television season speaking before the national advertising community at New York City Center.

“Broadcast television needs a jolt. We feel it’s our responsibility, as the No. 1 network for the last four seasons, to provide that electricity,” said Liguori. “The goal of our business is entertaining viewers…they’re our lifeblood, and it’s incumbent upon us to make sure their first and favorite entertainment destination is FOX.”

Reilly added, “We’re going to make plenty of noise and yet potentially have more stability and success than we’ve had historically in the fourth quarter. We’ll be focused in the fall with two new series – one comedy and one drama – and then use our big assets in January to launch an even more powerful second season.”

The new event drama premiering this fall is FRINGE, a fantastical thriller from acclaimed writer/producer J.J. Abrams (“Lost”), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (“Star Trek,” “Mission: Impossible III,” “Alias”). Joshua Jackson (“Dawson’s Creek”), John Noble (“Lord of the Rings”) and newcomer Anna Torv star as an unlikely trio who uncover a deadly mystery involving a series of unbelievable events and realize they may be a part of a larger, more disturbing pattern that blurs the line between science fiction and technology.

The new comedy slated for fall is DO NOT DISTURB (working title), an upstairs/downstairs workplace comedy starring Jerry O’Connell (“Crossing Jordan”) and Niecy Nash (“Reno 911!”) as the management team behind one the hottest and hippest hotels in New York City.

One additional drama and one unscripted series will launch in midseason. From Joss Whedon, creator of groundbreaking cult favorites “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly,” comes DOLLHOUSE, a gripping, high-action drama starring Eliza Dushku (“Tru Calling”) as Echo, a member of an underground group of “Actives” who have their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas to carry out a variety of missions. The Actives don’t just pretend to be new people – they become new people, yet they are never aware they are actually pawns in someone else’s game. SECRET MILLIONAIRE is a heart-warming new unscripted series that focuses on a different millionaire each week, who goes undercover to some of America’s most disadvantaged areas in search of everyday heroes to possibly change their lives forever.

Two new animated comedies will also join the schedule in the spring. From the creators of FAMILY GUY and AMERICAN DAD, comes THE CLEVELAND SHOW (working title), the story of what happens when FAMILY GUY’s Cleveland Brown moves to Stoolbend, VA, to make good on a promise to his high school sweetheart. SIT DOWN, SHUT UP (working title), created by Emmy Award winner Mitchell Hurwitz (“Arrested Development”), follows a group of unconventional teachers and staff members working at a high school in a small northeastern fishing town who never lose sight of the fact that the students must ALWAYS come second.

Named one of the Big Apple’s “10 Best Places to Stay,” The Inn is just that – the “in” place to be, with its chic décor, stylish staff and celebrity clientele. Behind the scenes, however, the upstairs/downstairs dynamic tells quite a different story. The hotel’s top-notch reputation and sophisticated look is due in large part to NEAL (Jerry O’Connell, “Crossing Jordan”) – at least in his opinion. Although The Inn’s charismatic owner R.J. (guest star Robert Wagner) takes all the credit, Neal is the egotistical, hyper-stylish, detail-oriented general manager who will do whatever it takes to keep the hotel and its employees up to his standards. RHONDA (Niecy Nash, “Reno 911!”) is the head of Human Resources who also keeps Neal’s demands in check. She’s brash, fabulous and brutally honest and runs the HR department from her bullpen downstairs with a set of rules that are all her own. Rhonda does her best to keep the back of the house in line and the front of the house out of trouble. At the front desk handling check-in while wearing 6-inch Manolos is NICOLE (Molly Stanton, “Twins”), an aging model who is svelte, cynical and slightly starving. Much to his dismay, his love went unrequited, and Donna wound up marrying another man. Cleveland once told Donna he would always love her, and if this man ever done her wrong, he’d be there when she called. Well, this man done her wrong. Donna’s husband skipped town with another woman, leaving Donna with a daughter and a baby. Now she’s come to Cleveland and offered him another chance at love. Unattached after the Loretta-Quagmire debacle and true to his word, Cleveland joyously accepts and he and CLEVELAND JR. move to Stoolbend, VA, to join their new family. Once in Stoolbend, Cleveland has a few surprises in store for him, including a flirtatious new stepdaughter, a 5-year-old stepson who loves the ladies, as well as a collection of neighbors that includes a loudmouth redneck couple, a British family seemingly stuck in the Victorian era and a family of bears living at the end of the block. SIT DOWN, SHUT UP (working title) (Sundays, 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT): From Emmy Award-winning writer Mitchell Hurwitz (“Arrested Development”) and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (“Two and a Half Men”) comes SIT DOWN, SHUT UP (working title), an animated comedy that focuses on the lives of eight staff members at a high school in a small northeastern fishing town (Go Baiters!) who never lose sight of the fact that the children must ALWAYS come second. We watch them grapple with their own egos, needs and personal agendas, their petty insecurities and prejudices, unrequited loves, and ruthless battles for power – and that’s just at the staff meeting. SUE SEZNO (Kenan Thompson, “Saturday Night Live”), a woman who frequently says “no,” is the acting principal of the school (the actual principal is recovering from a series of unfortunate accidents that might be seen as escape attempts). It lampoons modern society while exposing the dreams, flaws and struggling humanity of our first and most formative authority figures: teachers.

Actually this schedule is pretty good. Out of all the networks, it makes the most sense.

I will not be watching any new show on FOX after they cancelled Back to You. I hope Til Death and Do Not Disturb get record low ratings.

This is a really good schedule, they are obviously really banking on Fringe.

Monday and Wednesday are very weak but I love Tuesday/Thursday/Friday.

Not focused on the midseason schedule because FOX will probably totally change it a zillion times.

Wow! Fox actually has a decent schedule. The best I've seen so far. I'm looking forward to the return of Prison Break and 24. Fringe sounds very interesting and DIFFERENT for a change (SOOO tired of lawyer, cop, hospital shows) I like Eliza Dushku so I'm looking forward to Dollhouse as well. I just hope FOX doesn't cancel these shows after 2 episodes like they do with anything that's decent.

And the award for first cancellation of the new fall season goes to...Fox's Do Not Disturb!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the critically savaged sitcom, starring a slumming Jerry O'Connell and Niecy Nash, has been axed after three low-rated episodes. The show's Wednesday time slot will be filled with repeats of 'Til Death, which upgrades the network's 9 to 10 p.m. comedy block from excruciatingly painful to unbearably painful. (And yes, that is an upgrade, albeit a very slight one.)

A Fox insider insists no official decision has been made re: Do Not Disturb's fate.

News comes just days after the show's producers publicly apologized for making such a crappy show.

Friday, 12:34 p.m. PT: It's official. A network spokesperson now confirms to E! News that Fox has canceled the series Do Not Disturb.

Fox's workplace sitcom Do Not Disturb has been canceled. Sources close to the show confirm to me that DND is gone after just three aired episodes, although the official announcement won't come down until next week. A rep for the studio said the show has not been killed—just being preempted on Oct. 1 for an hour of 'Til Death—but an inside source says DND is a goner!

What's with the Thursday movies? Instead of working around the schedule they have, they should have changed the schedule. Thursdays should go back to 5th Grader and Lyrics. Kitchen Nightmares should go back to Wednesdays at 9pm, and Fridays should be the graveyard for Til Death and Hole in the Wall.

Hopefully by midseason, a lot of changes will be made.

Come midseason, FOX neds to make some changes. Hell's Kitchen should help out Thursdays a lot. I doubt Secret Millionaire will hit - if its a bomb, they always have Moment of Truth, 5th Grader, or Lyrics to help out. And then there's Mondays - not sure what FOX is going to do there.

Another question. What's going on with Til Death? Is it preempted for the rest of the season? And also, how many episodes have been ordered for the season?

FOX really needs to get rid of it - it's hurting their overall numbers.

'Til Death is just not airing in December, as far as I know. It was always scheduled that way. Secret Millionaire was booked in the slot in July.

I'd say midseason, but you never know with FOX. I thought for sure it would come in and replace Hole in the Wall by now. But, FOX has so many shows to air with just 2 hours a night to air them - if they had 10pm, that would help them out so much you wouldn't believe.

Hopefully we've seen the end of Til Death. 5th Grader should move to Thursdays permanently. It does so much better there than on Fridays.

How come FOX Sunday Night Line up is not in High Definition

-- Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" is going to air on low-rated Fridays. The series was originally scheduled to air with "24" on Mondays. Instead, "House" will open the night, followed by "24."

-- "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" is almost moving to Friday and will serve as lead-in to "Dollhouse."

-- "Hole in the Wall," despite many publications assuming it was dead, is coming back.

Also: Wednesdays was originally going to have "House" and "American Idol" results show. Now "Idol" will be paired with new drama "Lie to Me." "Idol" and "Fringe" will still partner on Tuesdays. Instead of reality block of "Hell's Kitchen" and "Secret Millionaire" on Thursday nights, Fox will partner "Hell's" with a lead-in from reliable drama "Bones."

The wait is almost over as FOX announces premiere dates of new and returning series as well as revisions to its 2008-2009 midseason schedule.


January starts with the not-to-be-missed blockbuster premieres of 24 and AMERICAN IDOL. As previously announced, the non-stop action begins and a new day dawns for JACK BAUER (Kiefer Sutherland) when 24 returns with an explosive two-night, four-hour season premiere Sunday, Jan. 11 and Monday, Jan. 12 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). AMERICAN IDOL, television’s No. 1 show, returns for Season Eight with a two-night, four-hour premiere event Tuesday, Jan. 13 and Wednesday, Jan. 14 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

All-new episodes of HOUSE, BONES, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and HOLE IN THE WALL will air on new nights in midseason. Get real on Mondays with all-new episodes of HOUSE leading into real-time drama 24. Emmy-winning medical drama HOUSE moves to Mondays (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and has its time period premiere Jan. 19 followed by the time period premiere of 24 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

LIE TO ME, the compelling new drama from the producers of 24, debuts Wednesday, Jan. 21 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) after AMERICAN IDOL and stars Tim Roth (“The Incredible Hulk,” “Reservoir Dogs”) as DR. What's happening with The Cleveland Show? Are they saving it now for the 09-10 season?

any idea when Prison Break is supposed to return after their fall finale?

Prison Break and the new animated shows would launch in the Spring. This schedule is only for Winter. Prison Break is on its last legs, it'll be gone after this season I bet.

I know I will be glad to Cleveland.

FOX is like a different network 3 times every season - fall, winter, spring. I really think this is keeping them from being a balanced network like the others are.

Besides that, I like this winter schedule. I'm surprised at Dollhouse, though. If it can do any better than New Amsterdam or Canterbury's Law, it could do well. SCC on Fridays will be a disaster - if it can barely manage 5 million on Mondays, it could dip as low as 3 million on Fridays. Prison Break will definitely return in the slot come March or so, or earlier. I say that both are dead past this season, though.

House and 24 should be a great pair on Mondays. I'm glad they decided to go with Hell's Kitchen Thursdays at 9pm instead of 8pm - its not fit at 8pm. And once Idol is down to half-hour on Wednesdays, I'd expect one of the animated comedies to take the spot, with Til Death gone maybe until summer. And I'm surprised Moment of Truth isn't on. If FOX was smart, they could build a great summer around Moment of Truth, Kitchen Nightmares, 6th Grader, and Lyrics.

Does anyone know when FOX will do something with Mad TV's Time Slot.

Mad TV airs through the rest of the season. Appearantly, their testing out Spike Feresten in the 11pm hour in January for 6 weeks in an hour-long mode instead of half hour. If that doesn't make ratings gold (which I dont see how, he's not funny), then the hour will probably go to locals.

Idol will expand for two hours more than 4 weeks since TOP 11, TOP 10 and maybe TOP 9 are also 2 hours or 90 minute. So, no Fringe until the end of March ?

I have to agree - Fringe already seems DOA to me. It's had a tough run this fall, losing its audience by December. It'll air its 4 episodes after Idol - if it does well enough (which probably means 15 million or close to it), then it will be back in April. If not, Glee will take the spot, and Glee will fit like a glove out of Idol. I see a lot more potential in Glee than in Fringe.

Meanwhile, I also see potential in Lie to Me. It sounds like a nice strong drama, something FOX needs.

In my opinion, Glee sounds like a show that would do fantastic paired with Idol. I don't get why they'd rather air it in the fall without the support. Fringe squanders the lead-in every week it aired - Glee sounds like it would be a perfect match with Idol.

What's Mental?

I see they're splitting up 5th Grader and Lyrics. I'd much rather them both air together. And why does it have to be on Friday? For the summer, you'd think FOX would give them a better timeslot.

Another season of Hell's Kitchen? Is that really a good idea? This season has been doing good, so why overdo it? What's missing, though, is Kitchen Nightmraes. This should be airing instead of Hell's Kitchen.

Why would they launch a new drama on Fridays? Seems like a burnoff more than anything. They should have launched it with House repeats on Mondays - that would seem to be the logical way to go. Airing it with gameshows doesn't make much sense.

Anyword on Kitchen Nightmares, Moment of Truth, or Secret Millionaire Pavan? Thought those would be back in the summer.

There are 21 episodes, and normally, the season finale was supposed to air on Tuesday May 19th. But since now there is the series preview of "Glee", I'm wondering where the season finale will air.

Maybe they could do a 2-night event like this :

Fringe is obviously not a top priority for them. My guess would be for them to hold over any remaining episodes for next season, because it will most likely be renewed for some reason.

Although, FOX held over episodes of Back to You for the next season, and unfortunately, they never aired, so who knows.

I agree with that - but it is coming back eventually, after all these specials and such are over with. But for how many episodes is unclear. Maybe FOX will leave some of the middle episodes unaired, and air the ones leading up the finale?

You can tel that Fox doesn't care about Fringe anymore. In the fall, it was one of their most hyped about series and now they don't want to give it the time of day. If it does come back, it will probably be because Fox always has trouble in the fall with their shows and they need a few veteran shows to prop up it's lineup.

And knowing how American Idol will probably run over 5 minutes, Osbournes won't be starting til 9:30. I really hate it when Idol is rushed with time - the whole show seems so unenjoyable.

It could just be that Idol needs more time - probably after the rehearsals or whatever for tomorrow's show, they needed an extra 5 minutes.

If Fringe comes back, pairing it with House won't help, because it needs to prove like Lie to Me, it can stand on its own. A LTM/Fringe pairup for the fall wouldn't be bad.

Birmingham, AL affiliate cut it at the last-minute also. I hope it epicially bombs. I saw about 30 seconds of it on the Atlanta station and I think I lost brain cells.

It's back next week with 6 straight episodes - although, FOX was advertising Bones' return with like 11 straight episodes, and so far, it came back and aired 1 episode every other week-LOL.

Yeah, it wasn't really raunchy or groundbreaking, but just crazy. It dipped down to about 8 million viewers in finals, though - that's definitely a bomb after a 25 million lead-in.

That's a whole lot of Bones. First it was just scheduled for the special Wednesday airing, but I guess they also threw Monday in there too. All those preemptions by Obama put the show behind schedule, I guess.

Worst possible timeslot. The show is DEAD! Ratings were already horrific at 8:30 when a lot more people are watching(plus it was between The Simpsons and Family Guy). 7pm hour is death, no way it's coming back.

Why not air all 13 of them at 7pm? It's not like repeats of American Dad are going to do any better.

On DamnYouAll.net there's a rumor going around about American Dad entering the infamous Futurama Death Slot of 7:30pm starting next Fall.
That may explain why Volume 4's packaging so unimpressive and bland compared to past sets, it means they're putting less money into the series. I mean, American Dad got the Night Court-esque keep case treatment this time around!
