Sorry I didn't post this sooner. After I wrote it all down, I was too tired to post it last night. But here it is! Just like last time, I tried to get everything in. I forgot how many good lines there were in this one!
Ted comes in, orders everyone out. Mary asks if there's a bomb threat. Ted says it's worse than that: it's Lou. "I said 'Good morning' to him, and he threw my hat in the mailbox!" Mary and Murray say it can't be that bad. Ted runs out, then Murray decides to leave, too. Lou comes in, angry, and orders Mary into his office. He tells her he doesn't want to see any more booze around the office. He tells her to get rid of the bottle in his desk. She puts it in the trash. Lou says that's the first place he'll look. He explains that he had dinner w/ someone, had too much to drink, and wound up at her place. "Do you know what it's like to wake up next to a stranger?" "Sure....I mean, I can imagine." Mary asks if she was really a stranger. He says no, he's known her for a few years. But emotionally, they were strangers. "Do you know what I mean?" "Sure, sometimes you have to get to know a person well before you realize they're a stranger." "When I got up this morning, I was so confused." "Emotionally?" "I didn't know where the bathroom was." Lou says maybe he feels bad b/c of who the woman is. "It doesn't matter who the woman is. *Pause* Who is the woman?" Lou refuses to tell. He says he's sweating bullets, so he reaches in his pocket for a hanky, and a note falls out. Mary notices that whoever wrote the note dots their I's with little hearts just like Sue Ann. Loou gives her a "look," and Mary realizes it was Sue Ann. She giggles. Lou says it's not funny, and asks what should say to her. "What do you want to say to her?" "Well, I want to explain to her that I can't marry her." "She's not going to force you to marry her. What do you think she's going to do - hold a spatula to your throat?" Lou makes her promise she won't tell. She does.
Sue Ann comes into the newsroom. Ted asks how she is. "I didn't sleep a wink all night. I feel wonderful!" She knocks on Lou's door. He asks who's thtere. "It's opportunity knocking again." Sue Ann says she hopes he feels exactly like she does. "Like a glorious flower finally opening her petals to the sun." "I don't feel quite like that." Lou says he doesn't know what to say to her. "Why don't you say, 'Sue Ann, you're the most exciting woman on God's green Earth'?" "Let's not bring God into this." "Sue Ann, could you do me a favor?" "Maybe on my lunch hour." Lou says he doesn't want anyone to know what happened. Sue Ann says everyone will know by the roses in his cheeks. (LOL)
Murray drops Mary off at home that night. He asks if she knows what was bothering Lou. Mary says she knows, but can't tell. Murray says they always tell each other everything, and she can't hold out now just b/c it's something really juicy. Mary says she never said it was. "Is it really juicy?" "Is it ever." Mary says she still can't tell. Murray says he's hurt. Mary gives in. "If I tell you...." Murray sits down. Mary says she didn't say she would tell. Murray says they both know she will, and he also knows she'll make him promise not to tell. "I wouldn't have to do that, b/c I know you won't tell...will you?" "Guess who Sue Ann Nivens spent the night with?" "Come on, Mary, I've gotta be home in an hour!"
Back at the newsroom the next day, Lou and Mary are going through old files. They find Ted's job applicaton. He put down Jacques Costeau as reference. Lou says Ted figured they couldn't check, b/c Costeau was underewater all the time. Ted comes in and says he heard Sue Ann's got a new man in her life, and he wants to know who it is. He asks Lou what kind of dumbo would hang out w/ Sue Ann. "Either he's a glutton for punishment, or he just got out of prison!" Mary asks why Ted doesn't have anything better to do. Ted says he has a lot of time to fill. "My brain needs stimulation." "Have you tried shock treatments?" Murray asks. Ted asks Murray if he has any idea who Sue Ann's guy is. Murray says maybe it's somebody on her crew. Mary whispers to Lou that he looks suspicious. If it weren't him, he'd be interested, too. Ted tells Lou he thinks it's someone at WJM. Just then, Sue Ann walks in. "I just wanted to give you your socks back." She says she washed them, too. Lou thanks her. "Don't mention it. I'll be happy to do it....anytime." She leaves. Ted says Sue Ann is being very cool, and not giving anything away. He and Mary leave. Lou tries to explain to Murray why Sue Ann had his socks. He says she was down on her set, and he had Japanese food. He explains that he took off his shoes. "That explains why she had my shoes....now what was she doing with my socks?" Murray says it's OK, he knows. Lou scoffs. "You can't believe everything Sue Ann says." "Sue Ann didn't tell me." Mary returns. Lou glares at her. "You crossed your heart!"
Lou won't come out of his office. Finally he lets Mary in. He begins to talk about the show. Mary says he has every right to be angry. Lou says he's not angry, he still respects her. They just can't be friends anymore. Mary begins to cry. Lou reaches into his pocket, and hands her a sock. She takes it. Lou asks if she'd like to go out and collect herself. Mary says no, she'll do it right here. She gets herself under control, and Lou asks if she's almost collected now. She begins sobbing all over again. Ted comes in, and asks why she's crying into a sock. "Want to see what I do to stop Georgette from crying? Boo!" Mary screams, and cries even harder. "Oh, wait, that's for hiccups."
Lou goes and sees Sue Ann on her set. He says he wants to apologize. Sue Ann says he was wonderful. "If you were a souffle, you'd rise high in the pan." Lou says it can't happen again. He offers to take her to dinner. She says he can't toy w/ her, then expect to get away with it by buying her one dinner. He then offers two dinners, and a lunch. She accepts. Ted comes in, and says Mary wants to see Lou upstairs. Sue Ann leaves, after kissing the top of Lou's head. Ted says that if Sue Ann's new boyfriend had seen that, Lou would be in big trouble.
Lou comes into Mary's office and sees Mary waiting for him. "If you move into a new house, and you find that the rooms are drafty, you don't move out." Lou agrees. Mary says that if you have a friend who really cares for you, and they make one mistake, you don't stop being friends. Lou doesn't agree. "It's just like the drafty house!" Lou says she's right. "OK, I'll move out of the drafty house." Mary says she doesn't want to work there anymore. Lou asks if she'll give 2 weeks' notice. Mary says no, she'll give 2 years. If he's still being like this in 2 years, she's leaving. Mary says she once had a one-night stand, too, with Walter Cronkite. Lou doesn't buy it. Mary tries again. "Roger Mudd?" Lou tries to hide a smile. He denies it. Mary persists. Lou gives in, and they hug.
