the Lisa Bonet episodes are undoubtly the worst season. Lisa getting pregnant and leaving was prolly the best thing for this series.

Claire's Last Stand was actually filmed early on, but was held back for some reason. Look at how the cast is sorta different just for that episode--no Loretta Devine or Mary Alice.

Ireneparalegal
05-05-2008, 10:47 PM
Oh don't get me started on Mary Alice. Another person I was glad to see leave ADW. You are so right abt that Lisa comment. She was so bland in this show and it was hard to see a character go from brains to duh!

One moment she is explaining Shakespeare to Theo and Cockroach the next, she is some dumb college student.

Jude The Obscure
05-05-2008, 10:51 PM
Remember Mary Alice in that episode on GT about her wanting to give her baby for adoption? I really can't stand that episode.

I did like the fact that Dwayne Wayne was brought to The Cosby Show for that one episode--so in effect it wraps up Lisa's storyline started on ADW.

Ireneparalegal
05-05-2008, 10:53 PM
I think Solomon hates that GT episode too. He said it didn't make sense to bring on characters we never saw before.

I don't agree with that. We needed to see other characters, not just the Evans'. But that episode was just too hard to imagine and enjoy. I roll my eyes at it because Thelma's dramatics were annoying

I loved Lisa on ADW. I do not think that Lisa is responsible for the following:

The awful transition music
The writing/storylines
Some of the characters that did not click.
The lighting of the scenery

Even some of the actors admitted to Anne Beats being the problem and the problem for season one. I do not blame Lisa for that. If Debbie had creative control at the time, the show would have been good with Lisa IMO.

Anne Beatts has a black college Square Pegs thing going.

 That is a great way of putting it Thomas. Thank you. I did not get the feeling at all that Hillman was a black college at all. With Marisa Tomei and the few whites sprinkled around, it was just horrible. I felt like Cosby (as usual) had to have this rainbow effect in all his shows just to show some sort of "equality". You would always see all kinds of races in his shows, which is a good thing, but not if you have a show abt an ALL BLACK COLLEGE. Am I right or wrong?

Not that I hate the first season. It was just uneven a lot of the times. Lisa's character was like a lot of spinoff syndrome victims--the character doesn't resemble what she was on the original show

And for Thomas--I don't blame Lisa for all those things. I just think her leaving was the shot in the arm the show needed to take off and not just be "The Cosby Show II: College Life with Denise" :)

Ireneparalegal

I also did not like the visits by Claire, Rudy or Grandpa Huxtable. I loved ADW after Lisa. It needed a face-lift in so many ways and Debbie was the genius behind all of that.

So basically the show seemed like less of a spinoff after season 1 and more like a new show with no connection to The cosby show?

True. I have no problem with that. I should have said predominant black college. Phylicia said to Mr. Cosby after her trip to do the episode that "things were not right on set and your name is on this project". Bill wanted Phylicia to do some cleaning up. He wound up using her sister Debbie. Debbie did not fire anyone. Head Honchos let Marisa go (which I thought was a huge mistake).

The first season is still one of my faves but some eps like Denise having a crush on David Alan Grier's character was pointless boring to the bone. Anne was using basic, safe material to do episode. Pointless crushes, egg sitting(although I liked the episode) and others were just ridiculous versus racism, sexual tension, politics, step competition rivalries.

Whether Lisa was there or not, the show would have improved under Debbie's guidance. The cast was much happier and they were able to voice their opinions about storylines.

They were dull and not necessary. ADW was Lisa's show, but it proved after Lisa was gone that the show could and it did, stand up on its own.

:D Very good point, but I still think that it could have been done. I wish Lisa had not gotten pregnant at that time. She would have continued with success. Don't hate me ya'll but I love the crossover episodes Do you think that Claire would have gotten along with Marian or Adele or both :(

I didn't even watch the first season in its original run. I was angry that Family Ties was moved off Thursdays so I watched Sledge Hammer and The Charmings ( probably the only one in America who did that). I saw them in syndication though and they are very subpar. See how the 10:30 pm episode ended--it was clearly leading to a Denise/Dwayne Wayne romance. That's one reason I kinda don't like season 1--because the storylines got messed up due to Lisa's being "rebellious" I agree that the changes made were for the better, but now thinking about it, it would have been nice to see how that relationship would have progressed.
